Paladin
Base Class: Paladin

In order to become initiated as a deathstalker, one must have fulfilled a set of strict requirements. First of all, the paladin must have Bhaal as their deity and be adept in hiding, moving silently, and surviving in difficult scenarios. The potential deathstalker must also be able to quick draw their weapon and have proof of murdering at least sixteen different sentient lifeforms, in sixteen different ways. The paladin must also be able to cast spells at a certain level of difficulty, and be attuned to either the Death or Destruction domains.

Once initiated, the deathstalker must adhere to the law of Bhaal. If they violated such dogma, they would be stripped of their deathstalker spellcasting abilities until they sincerely atoned. Deathstalkers believed that every murder committed in the name of Bhaal brought him closer to his resurrection. They were required to murder at least once a tenday, and if this couldn't be fulfilled (say, due to incarceration), they would have to make up for each murder missed.

A deathstalker made sure that each of their murder victims heard the following last words: "Bhaal awaits thee, Bhaal embraces thee, none escape Bhaal". Almost all deathstalkers were clerics and paladins, although some picked up training as rogues, and very few trained as fighters, etc.

The clergy of Bhaal in Faerûn were known as Bhaalists or Bhaalyn, the latter being used more commonly in the lands east of the Dragon Reach. Together they were a disorderly network of local hierarchies, with the urban and rural branches maintaining distant relations from one another. Collectively, they believed that murder was both a duty to their god and a game for their enjoyment. Each cleric of Bhaal was expected to perform at least one murder every tenday, in the darkest moment in the dead of night.

Cult of Personality

As an action, your voice can whip a crowd in to a frenzy. Anyone within hearing range will be compelled to riot and commit acts of violence.

Carrion Call

Effects up to 100 people within 100 feet. Each target must make a Wisdom saving throw at -2 disadvantage. If it fails the saving throw, it is charmed by you until the caster is unconscious or dead, and the spell cannot be dispelled otherwise. The creature automatically fails the saving throw if it is unconscious. The charmed creature will listen to any and all commands from you, with the exception of actions that harm the caster. If the spell ends, the creature knows it was charmed by you.

Herald of Bhaal

Any sentient being that can hearing your voice directly or indirectly (i.e. message in a bottle etc.) can fall prey to this effect.  There's no limit to the  number of targets this can effect and it will last for 24 hours.

Message in a Bottle

You can store your voice inside any container that could hold a liquid for up to 30 minutes. If you store Whisper of Chaos or Carrion Call, it will trigger when the container is opened. In addition to Whisper of Chaos and Carrion Call's basic affects, targets affected can spread the effect to other targets.

Whisper of Chaos

Effects up to 10 people within 30 feet. Each target must make a Wisdom saving throw at -1 disadvantage. If it fails the saving throw, it is charmed by you for one hour or until the caster is unconscious and/or dead, and the spell cannot be dispelled otherwise. The creature automatically fails the saving throw if it is unconscious. The charmed creature may listen to commands from you, with the exception of actions that harm the caster. If the spell ends, the creature knows it was charmed by you.

Ritual of Bhaal

During the time that he was dead, Bhaal had many scattered cultist groups, the most infamous being the Deathstalkers of Bhaal, who attempted to bring him back to life.

When Bhaal comes to you in on of these forms:

  • The Slayer: You are embued with Bhaal's spirit. (See Avatar of Bhaal: The Slayer)
  • The Ravager:  Your sacrifice will be consumed and become a 30 feet (9.1 meters) monster with a twisted, grimacing face that featured a flowing beard and mane, 7 feet (2.1 meters) horns and eyes full of the flames of Gehenna (See Avatar of Bhaal: The Ravager)
  • Kazgoroth: Your sacrifice will be consumed and become a form is simply a shape-shifting monstrosity (See Avatar of Bhaal: Kazgoroth) .

Last Breath

Deathstalkers who die after attaining 15th level are affected by the last breath of Bhaal. Said to contain the power residual in their dead god's last gasp, this ability causes a deathstalker slain in the service of Bhaal to be affected as if by the spell raise dead, as cast by a 12th-level cleric. This ability takes effect hour after the deathstalker is killed, as long as the body has remained intact during that time. During that hour, the body shows no sign of life or that magic is affecting the corpse. As per raise dead, the deathstalker immediately loses 1 level. This is an often monstrous and horrifying event, as broken limbs reset, blood starts pumping out of wounds that slowly close, and twisted heads and necks turn back.

Avatar of Bhaal: The Slayer

When you take this form, and at certain intervals, you must succeed on a Charisma saving throw against your own spell save DC + the number rolled on the die, or the demon takes control over your body.

You take on the visage of a corpse with a feral face and ivory skin inset with deep lacerations that flowed with black ichor.

While in this form you gain:

Aura of Murder: As long as the Avatar is not incapacitated, hostile creatures within 5 feet of it gain vulnerability to piercing damage unless they have resistance or immunity to such damage.

Magic Resistance: The Avatar has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

WARNING: It is very dangerous to access this spell at early levels via Ritual of Bhaal.

At Will (Level 20)

When you choose to take this form, and once per day, you must succeed on a Charisma saving throw against your own spell save DC + the number rolled on the die, or the demon takes control over your body until:

  • you are killed
  • you become unconscious and when you awake you will also need to make successful saving throw or the possession will continue.

While possessed, you may once per round try to make successful saving throw to regain control and maintain the form. While you are possessed you are directly under GM control. You may become hostile to any creature originally friendly to you and if engaged you will do everything in your capacity to reach and damage that creature. If there's no friendly creature within reach, you will attack the closest creature instead.

In addition while in this form you gain:

Regeneration: The Avatar regains 5 hit points at the start of his turn and has at least 1 hit point. If the Avatar takes Radiant damage, a critical hit, or is exposed to sunlight, this trait doesn't function at the start of the Avatar's next turn.

Undead Fortitude: If damage reduces the Avatar to 0 hit points, it must make a Constitution saving throw with a DC of 5 + the damage taken, unless the damage is radiant or from a critical hit, or if it is in direct sunlight. On a success, the Avatar drops to 1 hit point instead.

Death Leap: As a reaction to being brought to 0 hit points or being forced from a host body, the Avatar can attempt to leap into a live body within 10 feet. The target must make a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or become possessed, changing the statistics accordingly. The Avatar gains hit points equal to the current hit points of the host body and the regeneration trait doesn't function on its next turn.
