Base Class: Barbarian
Barbarians who walk the Path of the Rage tap into a primal and feral aspect of warfare. Their approach to combat is straightforward and brutally effective: total annihilation of their adversaries through sheer brute force. As they wade deeper into the fray, their strikes grow more lethal, especially when they fight with their backs against the wall. This path is not for the tactician but for the berserker who yearns to become an avatar of destruction.
As these barbarians ascend in power, they become more resistant to mental assaults, capable of lashing out against those who would dare to ensnare their minds. The boundary between their disciplined rage and primal instincts blurs, occasionally resulting in a fearsome roar that can shake the resolve of both allies and foes alike. When fully unleashed, their rage becomes an outburst of pure havoc, doubling their offensive might, though at the cost of potentially attacking without discernment and collapsing from exhaustion once the rage subsides.
Unbridled Savagery
When you choose this path at 3rd level, your rage takes on a feral nature that focuses solely on the annihilation of your adversaries. This singular focus enhances your physical might at the cost of complex battle tactics.
-
Rampage Strikes: While raging, your unarmed strikes deal 2d8 bludgeoning damage on a hit. This damage increases by an additional 1d8 if your hit points are at or below half of your hit point maximum. The ferocity of your attacks is such that you put your entire might behind each blow, forsaking finesse for brute force.
-
Focused Fury: The intensity of your rage prevents you from using bonus actions or reactions, as your combat style is purely offensive. Your rage drives you to pummel your enemies with successive blows, leaving no opportunity for strategic retreats or swift parries.
This path is for those who wish to embody the unstoppable force of a rampaging beast, trading versatility for raw power. As you grow in this subclass, your abilities will further reflect this focused, unyielding aggression, turning you into a juggernaut of destruction on the battlefield.
Indomitable Fury
At 6th level, your rage shields your mind from being broken or bent by fear or enchantment. While raging, you are immune to being charmed or frightened. If such effects are imposed on you when you enter your rage, they are suppressed for as long as you maintain your rage.
- Relentless Retaliation: If you engage in combat with the source of a charm or frightened effect that is affecting you, even while its effects are suppressed by your rage, you gain a singular focus on that adversary. As part of your action on your turn, you can make one additional melee attack against the creature that caused the effect. This extra attack represents your indomitable will manifesting in physical retribution against the attempt to control your mind.
This feature ensures that those who dare to manipulate your mind will face your unbridled wrath, finding themselves the target of your relentless onslaught.
Fury's Emergence
At 10th level, the boundary between your disciplined rage and primal instincts becomes perilously thin. Each time you rage, there is a chance that the raw essence of fury within you breaks free.
At the start of each of your turns while raging, you must focus to contain this power by making an Intelligence check with a DC equal to 8 + the number of rounds you have been in rage. If you fail this check:
-
Primal Roar: A visceral roar erupts from you, echoing the call of the wild. Your form swells in size, emanating a fearsome aura. On the turn you unleash this roar, you are so consumed by the transformation that you can take no actions or move, but this roar counts as making an attack for the purposes of maintaining your rage.
-
Growth: You grow one size category larger due to the surge of strength, reflecting the enlarge effect of the enlarge/reduce spell without the need for concentration. This growth includes:
- An increase in your reach by 5 feet.
- Advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws.
- An additional 1d4 damage on your unarmed strikes.
-
Intimidating Presence: The primal fear invoked by your roar affects all creatures within 60 feet. Each creature in this area that can hear your roar must make a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Strength modifier) or be frightened until the end of your next turn.
This surge of primal power can only be unleashed once during each of your rages. After you have roared, you must wait until your next rage to do so again. Your size returns to normal when your rage ends, as you regain control over your expanded form.
Cataclysmic Outburst
At 14th level, your rage can culminate in a moment of explosive violence, a raw expression of the bloodlust that fuels your combat prowess. This outburst pushes your body to its limits, leaving you vulnerable in its aftermath.
Once during each rage, you can choose to unleash a Cataclysmic Outburst at the start of your turn without using a bonus action:
-
Uncontrolled Mayhem: While Unleashed Havoc is active, roll a d6 at the start of each of your turns. The number rolled dictates your actions for that turn:
- 1-2: Attack the nearest enemy, or move to attack if none are in reach.
- 3-4: Strike the closest creature, whether ally or enemy.
- 5-6: You choose your target as normal.
-
Devastating Blows: When you make an unarmed strike during Unleashed Havoc, the damage for each hit is doubled (if your Rampage Strikes normally deal 2d8 damage, they now deal 4d8).
-
Exhaustive Collapse: After your rage ends, the strain on your body is so great that you fall unconscious for a number of minutes equal to the rounds you spent in rage. You can be awoken early by taking damage or by another creature using an action to shake or slap you awake.
Activating Cataclysmic Outburst represents a Barbarian at the peak of their destructive potential, a torrent of power that can overwhelm allies and enemies alike. It's an all-or-nothing gamble, harnessing the tempest of your inner storm in a fury that can shape the outcome of a battle — but leaves you defenseless once spent.
