Oath of the Protector

TENETS OF PROTECTION

Though the exact words and strictures of the Oath of Protection vary amongst those who take it, paladins of this oath share these tenets.

Protect Those In Need. Your strength is more than just a weapon; it is the most powerful shield. Interpose yourself between those bent on violence and those who cannot defend themselves. You put yourself in harm’s way to spare another the misery senseless violence yields.

Embrace Humility. If you are not able to prevent the outbreak of violence, it is your sacred duty to tend to those who are its victims. You have been gifted with the ability to heal wounds, cure poisons, and lift diseases; such a gift is wasted if it is not used. Tend to the wounded, the weak, and the ill and put them before yourself.

Courage. You must be willing to do what needs to be done for the sake of peace and stability, even in the face of overwhelmingly desperate odds. If you do not act for those around the world, then who will?

Responsibility. You must accept the consequences of any and all of your actions, and are responsible for fulfilling your duties and obligations no matter the time and place.

Channel Divinity

When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity options.

Bastion of Selflessness. As a bonus action, you can use your Channel Divinity to exclaim a prayer of self-sacrifice that compels your enemies to direct their violent acts towards you rather than your allies. For 1 minute or until you drop unconscious, if a creature targets one of your allies with an attack when it could have instead targeted you, the creature suffers a penalty to the attack equal to your Charisma modifier.

Obligation to Defend. As a reaction when a willing creature you can see within 60 feet of you is targeted with an attack or a harmful spell, you can use your Channel Divinity to teleport into its space as it simultaneously teleports to an unoccupied space of your choice that you can see within 30 feet of its original space. You then become the new target of the attack or spell and have resistance to any damage you take as a result.

Oath Spells

You gain oath spells at the paladin levels listed.

Oath of Protection Spells

Aura of Security

Starting at 7th level, while you are conscious, friendly creatures within 10ft and yourself are enveloped in an aura of stout defense. You and your allies get advantage on Strength and Dexterity saving throws, plus any effects that would stun them, knock them prone, restrain them, or forcibly move them.

Bastion

At 15th level, while wielding a shield allies within 10 feet of you get an AC bonus equivalent to your shield's AC bonus, and they now benefit from half cover. As a bonus action, you can also now enter a perfect defensive stance for 1 minute. While in the stance, you can make opportunity attacks without having to use your reaction, and you can use your reaction to make a melee attack against a creature that moves into your area of reach.

The Guardian

At 20th level, your skill and tenacity as a defender is completely unmatched. You are the embodiment of a protector. As an action, you can magically become the mighty guardian, gaining the following benefits for 1 minute:

  • You have resistance to all forms of damage.
  • Damage dealt against friendly creatures within 15 feet of you is instead transferred to you.
  • Whenever a creature casts a spell against either an ally within your aura or while within your aura, you may make them roll a Wisdom saving throw that if failed eliminates their spell before it can take effect (still using up the spell slot).

Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
