Our best attempt at a State Alchemist type wizard.

Transmutation Savant

For transmutation magic, and certain other cantrips, if you so choose, upon finding the spellbook, you can attempt to carve, brand, or tattoo the transmutation circle necessary to cast the spell on your own skin. To do so will require a skill check of DM's choice (typically arcana, medicine, or sleight of hand), and the nature of the spell will determine difficulty of access.

Minor Alchemy

Starting at 2nd level when you select this school, you can temporarily alter the physical properties of one nonmagical object, changing it from one substance into another. You perform a special alchemical procedure on one object composed entirely of wood, stone (but not a gemstone), iron, copper, or silver, transforming it into a different one of those materials. For each 10 minutes you spend performing the procedure, you can transform up to 1 cubic foot of material. After 1 hour, or until you lose your concentration (as if you were concentrating on a spell), the material reverts to its original substance.

Transmutation Circle

Starting at second level, as a bonus action, you gain the ability to quickly inscribe the ground, a wall, or some surface with a transmutation circle. While within 60 feet of this circle, you are able to activate certain transmutations and spells like Spike, Wall, and Elemental Coffin. The surface that the circle is on, as well as the surrounding area dictates what kind of damage is available for your spells. Completing and using the circle is taxing, to an alchemist. You can draw as many circles, per short rest, up to your proficiency modifier. Only one circle can be active at a time.

The damage types correspond as follows:

  • Water: Cold (Water, Snow)
  • Earth: Bludgeoning (Rocks, Wood)
  • Fire: Fire (Flames)
  • Air: Slashing (Wind)
  • Electricity: Lightning (Lightning)
  • Metal: Piercing (Metal Shards)

Transmuter’s Stone

Starting at 6th level, you can spend 8 hours creating a transmuter’s stone that stores transmutation magic. You can benefit from the stone yourself or give it to another creature. A creature gains a benefit of your choice as long as the stone is in the creature’s possession. When you create the stone, choose the benefit from the following options:

  • Darkvision out to a range of 60 feet
  • An increase to speed of 10 feet while the creature is unencumbered
  • Proficiency in Constitution saving throws
  • Resistance to acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder damage (your choice whenever you choose this benefit)
  • Advantage on their next Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma skill check. Regardless of success or failure, the stone ceases to function.

At 10th level you may choose one of the following benefits instead. These benefits cause the stone to cease function after 1 hour.

  • Blindsight out to a range of 60 feet but unable to see beyond that range.
  • Truesight out to a range of 5 feet.
  • An increase to speed of 30 feet while the creature is unencumbered.
  • They may choose to succeed a Saving Throw after they fail the roll but before the DM describes what happens.
  • Resistance to all damage types except from magical weapons.
  • Advantage on their next three skill checks. Regardless of success the stone ceases to function after three skill checks.
  • Each time you cast a transmutation spell of 1st level or higher, you can change the effect of your stone if the stone is on your person.

You can have a number of these stones equal to half of your proficiency bonus rounded down. If you create a new transmuter's stone beyond your limit the oldest ceases to function.

Each time you cast a transmutation spell of 1st level or higher, you can change the effect of your stone if the stone is on your person.

Starting at 6th level, you can consume a created stone to do one of two things:

In combat, consuming a transmuter's stone allows you to ignore the damage type restrictions in your transmutation circles, and double the range of the spells Spike, and Wall, and the blast radius of Elemental Coffin.

Outside of combat, consuming a transmuter's stone allows you to summon a homunculus that obeys your commands implicitly. You can instead use this effect to use the spell Summon Beast. When doing so, choose one of the element or damage types in your transmutation circle list. Your summoned beast has resistance to that type of damage.

Rock Surfing

At 10th level, you gain the ability to manipulate the earth beneath your feet and force to catapult you upward. As a bonus action, before you move, and until the end of your next turn, you gain a flying speed of 45ft. Whatever solid material you are standing on extends upward and carries you into the sky. As you travel, the earth you create to propel you persists and forms a bridge that remains where is and can be traversed until broken. The bridge has an AC of 20 and has hitpoints based on the material (Ice and Wood-10hp; Stone-15hp; Metal-25hp).

Master Transmuter

Starting at 14th level, you can use your action to consume the reserve of transmutation magic stored within your transmuter’s stone in a single burst. When you do so, choose one of the following effects. Your transmuter’s stone is destroyed and can’t be remade until you finish a long rest.

Major Transformation. You can transmute one nonmagical object—no larger than a 5-foot cube—into another nonmagical object of similar size and mass and of equal or lesser value.

Panacea. You remove all curses, diseases, and poisons affecting a creature that you touch with the transmuter’s stone. The creature also regains half its hit points.

Restore Life.  Roll a d2. On a success (1) you cast the raise dead spell on a creature you touch with the transmuter’s stone, without expending a spell slot or needing to have the spell in your spellbook.

Restore Youth. You touch the transmuter’s stone to a willing creature, and that creature’s apparent age is reduced by 3d10 years, to a minimum of 13 years. This effect doesn’t extend the creature’s lifespan.
