Ranger
Base Class: Ranger

Your connection to the natural world takes the form of a Griffon spirit, which can manifest in physical form. As your powers grow, your Griffon grows as well, blossoming from a young four-legged companion to a majestic winged creature large and strong enough for you to ride. Along the way, you gain an increasing share of the regal abilities of Griffons.

Griffon Gift

3rd-Level Griffonwarden Feature

The bond you share with your griffon creates a connection to griffonkind, granting you understanding and empowering your presence. You gain the following benefits:

Thaumaturgy. You learn the thaumaturgy cantrip, which is a ranger spell for you.

Screech of Mountains. You learn to speak, read, and write Giant or one other language of your choice.

Griffon Companion

3rd-Level Griffonwarden Feature

As an action, you can magically summon the griffon that is bound to you. It appears in an unoccupied space of your choice within 30 feet of you.

The griffon is friendly to you and your companions, and it obeys your commands. See its game statistics in the accompanying Griffon Companion stat block, which uses your proficiency bonus (PB) in several places. Whenever you summon the griffon, you can determine its cosmetic characteristics, such as its color, or its feather and fur texture; your choice has no effect on its game statistics.

In combat, the griffon shares your initiative count, but it takes its turn immediately after yours. It can move and use its reaction on its own, but the only action it takes on its turn is the Dodge action, unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command it to take another action. That action can be one in its stat block or some other action. If you are incapacitated, the griffon can take any action of its choice, not just Dodge.

The griffon remains until it is reduced to 0 hit points, until you use this feature to summon the griffon again, or until you die. Anything the griffon was wearing or carrying is left behind when the drake vanishes.

Once you summon the griffon, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest, unless you expend a spell slot of 1st level or higher to summon it.

Actions

Beak. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 plus PB to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 1d8 plus PB piercing damage.
Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 plus PB to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 2d4 plus PB slashing damage. If the griffon hits with its claws, the target must make a DC 12+PB Strength Saving Throw or be grappled. While grappling this way, the griffon may use subsequent actions to automatically hit with her beak attack.

Reactions

Victory Shriek. When an ally within 30 feet of the griffon that it can see hits a target with a weapon attack, the griffon can use its reaction to grant advantage on their next attack roll before the end of their next turn.

Bond of Wing and Paw

7th-Level Griffonwarden Feature

The bond you share with your griffon intensifies, protecting you and encouraging its growth. When you summon your griffon, it grows and matures into a hardy adolescent.

In addition, while your griffon is summoned, you and the griffon gain the following benefits:

Griffon Mount. The griffon grows to Medium size and its flight speed becomes 80 ft. Reflecting your special bond, you can use the griffon as a mount if your size is Medium or smaller, but its flight speed is halved while riding.

Ferocious Attack. The griffon gains the multiattack action, allowing the griffon to make two attacks: one with its beak and one with its claws. The griffon's claws deal an additional 1d4 slashing damage, and its beak deals an additional 1d8 piercing damage.

Regal Domain. Your griffon's Regal Aura now uses twice your Proficiency Bonus to determine the number of temporary hit points that are granted to allies, and its range also extends from you. When mounted on your Griffon, the aura's range is instead doubled.

Griffon’s Feather

11th-Level Griffonwarden Feature

You know the feather fall spell and can cast it once per long rest without expending a spell slot. You may cast it again if you have spell slots available.

Additionally, as an action, you can grow wings and claws like that of your griffon. While concentrating for one minute, you gain a flying speed equal to your walking speed and you grow claws which deal 1d6 plus your dexterity bonus. Once per turn, if you have a free hand available you can make one claw attack after successfully damaging an enemy with a melee attack roll.

This damage increases to 2d6 when you reach 15th level in this class.

Once you use this feature, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest.

Perfected Bond

15th-Level Griffonwarden Feature

The bond to your griffon reaches the pinnacle of its power as it matures into an exemplary adult specimen. While your griffon is summoned, you and the griffon gain the following benefits:

Horse Eater. The griffon grows to a Large Size and now automatically grapples a smaller creature on a hit which does not reduce the griffon's speed while dragging them. The griffon's claws deal an additional 1d4 slashing damage, and its beak deals an additional 1d8 piercing damage.

Sky Dweller. The griffon's wings grow and strengthen, becoming tireless. When you ride your griffon, its flying speed is no longer reduced by Bond of Wing and Paw.

Legendary Mount. While riding your griffon, you cannot be forcefully dismounted, and the griffon cannot be charmed or moved against its will. Additionally, whenever either of you fail a saving throw or take damage from an attack roll while within 30 feet of each other, you may reduce the damage by half for both of you as a reaction a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per long rest.
