Bard
Base Class: Bard

The College of Mischief is a bardic tradition that venerates the art of the trickster, celebrating those who can navigate the complexities of the world with wit, guile, and a touch of magic. Bards of this college are masters of deception, illusion, and surprise, using their talents not only for entertainment but as a means to influence, distract, and sometimes manipulate the world around them. They embody the spirit of the trickster, viewing life as a game in which the cleverest player wins.

Philosophy and Beliefs

Members of the College of Mischief believe that reality is subjective, and that perception can be molded like clay in the hands of a skilled artist. They see themselves as artists, with the world as their canvas and magic as their brush. To these bards, a well-executed prank or illusion can be as powerful as the most potent spell, capable of disarming foes, opening minds, and even changing the course of events.

These bards often serve as agents of change, challenging norms and expectations with their actions. They hold that authority and rules are often too rigid and that true freedom comes from the ability to adapt and innovate. In societies where the powerful too often oppress the weak, members of the College of Mischief use their skills to level the playing field, using stealth, subterfuge, and their wits to protect those in need.

Role in Adventuring Parties

In an adventuring party, a bard from the College of Mischief brings versatility, creativity, and an unparalleled capacity for unexpected tactics. Their ability to create illusions and manipulate perceptions makes them invaluable in situations requiring stealth, espionage, or negotiation. They excel in avoiding conflict through deception but can also turn the tide of battle with their clever use of spells and features to confuse and weaken their enemies.

Their arsenal includes not just spells, but a keen understanding of psychology and behavior, allowing them to predict and manipulate foes and allies alike. This makes them excellent strategists and diplomats, capable of navigating complex social situations with ease.

Educational Methods and Practices

The College of Mischief doesn't have a fixed curriculum or a traditional hierarchy. Learning is often hands-on, with senior members setting challenges and puzzles for their juniors, encouraging them to think creatively and solve problems unconventionally. Apprentices are encouraged to develop their own style and repertoire of tricks, illusions, and spells, with the understanding that the art of mischief is deeply personal and expressive.

Rites of passage often involve the successful execution of a complex prank or scheme, one that tests not only the apprentice's skill and creativity but also their understanding of the ethical implications of their actions. Bards of the College of Mischief are taught to use their abilities responsibly, ensuring that their tricks and deceptions harm no one or, if they do, only those who "deserve" it by their actions or nature.

Relationships with Other Bardic Colleges

Bards of the College of Mischief often have complicated relationships with other bardic colleges. While they may share mutual respect for the artistry and skills of their counterparts, their disdain for rules and authority can lead to tensions, especially with more traditional or law-abiding colleges. However, their shared love for music, art, and storytelling often bridges these divides, allowing for fascinating collaborations and, sometimes, friendly rivalries.

Despite their differences, members of the College of Mischief hold a deep respect for the power of music and storytelling, viewing these arts as the ultimate expressions of the trickster's ethos: to challenge, to innovate, and to transform the world in unexpected and delightful ways.

Trickster's Grace

Upon reaching the 3rd level, bards of the College of Mischief hone their expertise in the subtle arts of deception and sleight, becoming adept at manipulating both perceptions and physical realities. This expertise grants them proficiency in Sleight of Hand and Deception skills, or if they are already proficient, their mastery deepens, doubling their proficiency bonuses in these areas. Furthermore, these bards weave illusion with such finesse that they can cast disguise self at will, a reflection of their ability to adapt their appearances seamlessly to suit any situation. This magical disguise can be invoked a number of times equal to the bard's Charisma modifier (with a minimum of once) and is fully replenished following a long rest. "Trickster's Grace" not only enhances the bard's natural charisma and dexterity but also embeds them with a magical versatility that is essential for subterfuge, espionage, and social engineering, making them formidable agents of mischief.

Laugh It Off

By the 6th level, bards of the College of Mischief have learned to infuse their resilience with humor, allowing them and their companions to "Laugh It Off" when faced with adversity. This feature enables the bard to use their reaction to give themselves or an ally within 30 feet a chance to mitigate a failed saving throw by granting advantage on the next one. This capability, usable a number of times equal to the bard's Charisma modifier and replenishable after a long rest, symbolizes the bard's ability to turn potential setbacks into opportunities for success. It represents a deeper understanding of the flow of battle and social interactions, ensuring that the bard and their allies remain unphased by temporary failures, ready to tackle the next challenge with renewed vigor and a smile.

Master of Mischief

At the zenith of their journey, bards of the College of Mischief attain the title of Master of Mischief, gaining unparalleled abilities in illusion and escape. They can invoke the magic of hallucinatory terrain and greater invisibility without the need for spell slots, once per long rest for each spell. Additionally, they acquire the mystical ability to transform into a form akin to gaseous form for 10 minutes, also without expending a spell slot, once per long rest. This transcendence into the Master of Mischief empowers the bard to manipulate their environment and themselves in profound ways, enabling them to create complex illusions, vanish from sight at will, and even slip through the smallest of spaces. It's a testament to their mastery over the art of deception, illusion, and the very essence of mischief, allowing them to navigate any situation with unparalleled grace and ingenuity.
