Base Class: Sorcerer
Your power draws from the immortal flame that fuels the legendary phoenix. You or your ancestors perhaps rendered a phoenix a great service, or you were born in its presence. Whatever the cause, a shard of the phoenix’s power dwells within you.
That power is a mixed blessing. Like the mythical creature, you can invoke fiery energy and gain the ability to cheat death itself. This power comes at a cost. The fire within you seethes, demanding to be unleashed. You sometimes find yourself absentmindedly feeding fires. You can’t bear to allow a fire to sputter out. You feel most comfortable while holding a lit torch or sitting in front of a campfire.
More importantly, this gift comes with no special protection from fire. You are as vulnerable as any other creature to fiery magic, including your own. Phoenix sorcerers can use their powers to pull themselves back from the brink of death, and all too often their own, rash nature or reliance on destructive magic is what puts them there in the first place.
Such sorcerers are wanderers by necessity. The volatile nature of their magic makes other folk nervous. If a fire breaks out in town, a phoenix sorcerer had best flee, whether guilty or not. Fire is a dangerous force, and phoenix sorcerers have a reputation (deserved or not) for reckless behavior, confident that the essence of the phoenix can save them.
Phoenix Spells
Starting from the first level, you learn additional spells when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown in the table below. Each of these spells counts as a sorcerer spell for you, but does not count towards your sorcerer known spells.
| Sorcerer Level | spells |
|---|---|
| 1 | burning hands, cure wounds, fire bolt |
| 3 | scorching ray, lesser restoration |
| 5 | fireball, revivify |
| 7 | fire shield, death ward |
| 9 | immolation, raise dead |
Ignite
At first level, you receive the ability to ignite with a touch. As an action, you can ignite a flammable object that you touch with your hand - an object such as a torch, a piece of tinder, or rags.
Mantle of Flame
From the first level onwards, you can unleash the phoenix fire that roars within you. As a bonus action, you cover yourself in flames, and your eyes glow like hot coals. For one minute, you receive the following benefits:
- You illuminate the area for a 30-foot radius, and dim for an additional 30 feet.
- Any creatures that attack you with a melee attack from within five feet of you, or touch you, take fire damage equal to your Charisma modifier.
- Whenever you roll fire damage for a spell from the Phoenix Spells table, you may deal additional fire damage equal to your Charisma modifier. This additional damage may only be dealt once per creature, per cast.
You can use this feature twice, and then you must take a long rest until you can use it again. Starting at fourth level, if you have no uses left, you can spend four sorcery points to activate this feature.
Phoenix Spark
From the sixth level onwards, the flaming energy within you becomes tireless and vengeful. In the face of defeat, it breaks free to preserve you in a fiery roar.
If you are reduced to 0 hit points, you can expend one use of Mantle of Flame and your reaction to summon the phoenix's spark. Instead of falling unconscious, you are reduced to 1 hit point, and every creature within 10 feet of you takes fire damage equal to your sorcerer level plus your Charisma modifier.
If you use this feature during the effects of your Mantle of Flame, it is consumed as the price of this feature, and immediately ends.
If you have no remaining Mantle of Flame uses, you can spend four sorcery points to activate this feature.
Once used, you cannot reuse this feature until you take a long rest.
Form of the Phoenix
Starting at fourteenth level, your Mantle of Flame turns into a pair of wings. While under the effect of your Mantle of Flame feature, you receive additional benefits:
- You have a flying speed equal to your ground speed, and you can hover.
- You have resistance to fire damage.
Rebirth in Flames
From the eighteenth level onwards, you become eternal, like the legendary phoenix. You receive the following benefits:
- You can no longer age naturally or magically.
- When you use the Phoenix Spark feature, instead of being reduced to one health point, you are healed until half your maximum health, rounded down.
- Whenever you spend sorcery points with your Mantle of Flame active, you are healed for an amount equal to the number of sorcery points spent plus your Charisma modifier.

Posted Mar 26, 2024I published two updates today because I forgot to change some last minute stuff. Always loved the Phoenix Sorcerer, but having everything be reliant on Mantle of Flame while it's a once per long rest feature is really bad, and it's a good feature at levels 1-2 but absurdly broken from 3-20 while active.
Personally, I have no problems with the subclass itself being all about MoF, so I left that part unchanged, while preventing the absurd interaction with Scorching Ray (the reason it's so broken as soon as you reach 3rd level), but at the same time giving one more use per long rest, and the ability to spend sorcery points to activate it.
Phoenix Spark is roughly the exact same as the original. It's once per long rest, and always the "improved" version. However, you always have to pay the price for the original "improved" version - a MoF use.
Form of the Phoenix was nerfed so it could be moved to 14th level.
Rebirth in Flames is 100% original. I was thinking of a way to integrate the immortality of a phoenix somehow, and this was my take on it.
Last but not least, the Phoenix Spells table. One fire spell and one healing/resurrection spell from spell levels 1-5, and a cantrip. The resurrection is based around the good old phoenix feather items from Final Fantasy, and healing is a minor version of it. Death Ward is just a proactive resurrection.
