Sorcerer
Base Class: Sorcerer

The Phoenix Sorcery subclass from Unearthed Arcana, with the following changes:

  • Two uses of Mantle of Flame per long rest instead of one, in addition to being able to use it by expending 2 Sorcery Points.
  • Gain a spell list of additional spells known.
  • When using Phoenix Spark, causing yourself to be reduced to 1 hit point instead of 0 does not require your reaction, and does not end your Mantle of Flames. However, you must use your reaction immediately afterwards if you wish to deal fire damage. This reaction only disables Mantle of Flame for one round.
  • The Nourishing Fire feature only allows you to heal from casting fire damage spells of 1st-level or higher.

Ashen Magic

Starting at 1st level, your mystical connection to fire allows you to utilize your magic in a way most sorcerers cannot. As an action, you can magically ignite a flammable object that you touch—an object such as a torch, a piece of tinder, or the hem of drapes. The object you ignite cannot be worn or carried by another creature.

Furthermore, you learn additional spells when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown on the Ashen Spells table. Each of these spells counts as a sorcerer spell you know, but they do not count against the number of sorcerer spells you know.

Whenever you gain a sorcerer level, you can replace one spell you gained from this feature with another spell of the same level. The new spell must be a spell from the sorcerer, warlock, or wizard spell list which deals fire damage.

Mantle of Flame

Starting at 1st level, you can unleash the phoenix fire that blazes within you. As a bonus action, you magically wreathe yourself in swirling fire, as your eyes glow like hot coals. For 1 minute, you gain the following benefits:

  • You shed bright light in a 30-foot radius and dim light for an additional 30 feet.
  • Any creature within 5 feet of you that hits you with a melee attack or touches you takes fire damage equal to your Charisma modifier.
  • Whenever you roll fire damage on your turn, that roll gains a bonus equal to your Charisma modifier.

You can use this feature twice, and regain both uses upon finishing a long rest. At 3rd level, you can expend 2 sorcery points to use this feature again.

Phoenix Spark

Starting at 6th level, the fiery energy within you grows restless and vengeful. In the face of defeat, it surges outward to preserve you in a fiery roar. If you are reduced to 0 hit points, but not outright killed, you can cause yourself to instead be reduced to 1 hit point.

Explosive Spark. When you use this feature to be reduced to 1 hit point, you can use your reaction to draw upon the fire within yourself to repel your attackers. Each creature and object within 10 feet of you takes fire damage equal to half of your sorcerer level + your Charisma modifier. As part of this reaction, you may also activate your Mantle of Flame feature.

If you use this reaction while under the effects of your Mantle of Flame, or you activate your Mantle of Flames as part of it, the fire damage dealt by your explosive spark becomes equal to your sorcerer level + twice your Charisma modifier, and you do not benefit from your Mantle of Flame until the end of your next turn.

Once you use this feature to prevent being reduced to 0 hit points, you cannot do so again until you finish a long rest.

Nourishing Fire

Starting at 14th level, your fire spells soothe and restore you. When you cast a spell of 1st-level or higher that includes a fire damage roll, you regain a number of hit points equal to your Charisma modifier plus half of the spell slot's level (minimum 1).

Form of the Phoenix

At 18th level, you are able to master the spark of fire that dances within you. While under the effect of your Mantle of Flame feature, you gain additional benefits:

  • You have a flying speed of 40 feet, and you can hover.
  • You have resistance to all damage.
  • If you use your Explosive Spark reaction, each affected creature takes an additional 20 fire damage.
