Edit 5/16/24 - Drastically limited the amount of creatures that can be put in the codex of monsters. You now have to pick and choose which monsters go into your codex and you want to add everytime you level up.)

The School of Summoning focuses on the conjuration and summoning of creatures as a focus of their magic. Wizards who follow this tradition, known as Summoners, are revered for their ability to call forth powerful allies to aid them. These summoned beings can range from fierce beasts, elemental forces, undead, or even celestial and infernal beings providing versatile support in any situation.

Summoners form a magical bonds with their conjured allies, enhancing their abilities and ensuring their loyalty. Through rigorous study and practice, they master the art of summoning, balancing the power and duration of their summons to maintain control over the battlefield. Their unique abilities allow them to summon creatures strategically, adapting to the needs of each encounter.

Summoning Savant

2nd-level School of Summoning feature

Beginning when you select this school at 2nd level, the gold and time you must spend to copy a summoning spell into your spellbook is halved. A summoning spell is defined as any spell that conjures or summons creatures, monsters, or elementals. Additionally, you learn the Find Familiar and Flock of Familiars spells if you don't already know it. The spell doesn't count against your number of spells known.

You also learn a ritual that allows you to contract willing creatures to become one of your summons. The ritual takes 10 minutes, and requires you to be in constant contact with your spellbook to write the summoning contract with ink infused with your blood and the target creature's essence. You also gain the ability to summon the contracted creatures in your spellbook as an action without having to maintain concentration. Once you do so, you will not be able to summon a contracted creature until you finish a long rest.

Summoner's Bond

2nd-level School of Summoning feature

You establish a magical connection with your summoned creatures. When you summon a creature, it gains the following benefits:

  • The creature's hit point maximum is increased by your wizard level.
  • The creature adds your proficiency bonus to its attack rolls and saving throws.
  • You can communicate telepathically with the creature if it is within 100 feet of you.

Book of Summoning

6th-level School of Summoning feature

Through constant study and practice of magic, your spellbook evolves into a Book of Summoning, and a codex of monsters is inscribed into it. The codex consists of a limited number of non-humanoid and non-construct monsters of your choice, whose CR does not exceed your proficiency bonus. The number of monsters you can include in your codex is equal to your proficiency bonus multiplied by your Intelligence modifier.

When you gain this feature at level 6 and everytime you level going forward, you choose a number of creatures equal to your proficiency bonus to include in your codex. You can change the monsters in your codex whenever you finish a long rest, similar to preparing spells.

As an action, you can summon creatures from your codex with a total combined CR equal to or less than half your wizard level (rounded up) in unoccupied spaces you can see within 60 feet of you, expending spell slots to do so. You can distribute this CR total across multiple creatures as desired, but the maximum CR of any single creature cannot exceed your proficiency bonus. Additionally, any creature whose CR is below 1 counts as and has the stats of a CR 1 creature when summoned by this feature.

For example, as a 6th-level wizard with a proficiency bonus of +3, you can summon:

  • One creature of CR 3,
  • Three creatures of CR 1 each,
  • Or any other combination that doesn't exceed a total combined CR of 3.

When you use this feature, you must expend spell slots whose total levels are greater than or equal to the total CR of the creatures you wish to summon. For example, if you want to summon creatures with a total CR of 3, you could expend a 4th-level spell slot, a 3rd-level spell slot, a 2nd-level and a 1st-level spell slot, or three 1st-level spell slots.

You can maintain concentration on all summoned creatures simultaneously, but if you lose concentration, all summoned creatures vanish.

You are only able to use this feature a number of times equal to your spellcasting modifier.

Empowered Summoning

10th-level School of Summoning feature

Your summoned creatures gain additional benefits from your magical prowess:

  • They add your Intelligence modifier to their damage rolls.
  • They gain resistance to one damage type of your choice  while they are summoned.
  • When a creature within 5 feet of a creature you summoned takes an attack of opportunity, they can use their reaction to impose disadvantage on the attack roll.

Perfected Summoning

14th-level School of Summoning feature

Your mastery over summoning magic reaches its peak, allowing you to call forth creatures with greater ease and efficiency and gain benefits based on the number of creatures summoned.

  • Efficient Summoning: When you use your Book of Summoning feature, you can reduce the total spell slot levels required to summon creatures by 1 spell slot level. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Intelligence modifier per long rest.

  • Rapid Summoning: Summoning creatures through your Book of Summoning feature now takes a bonus action instead of an action.

  • Enhanced Summoning: Whenever you summon a creature using your Book of Summoning feature, you gain temporary hit points equal to half your wizard level (rounded down). Additionally, the creatures you summon through your Book of Summoning feature have their attacks count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage. You are only able to gain temporary hitpoints from this feature once per long rest.
