Base Class: Fighter
This world is often unfair, favoring those who take without regard for others. Karmic Warriors stand defiantly against this rule of the world, delivering the justice that the world seems to so sparingly deliver itself. Through specialized training, the Karmic Warriors have learned to gaze upon the deeds of all creatures, and pull forth their karma to manifest as a blessing or curse.
Scales of Karma
You’ve been granted the power to weigh the deeds of an individual and gaze upon their sins. Starting at 3rd level, when you take the attack action, you can forgo an attack to weigh the positive and negative karma of any creatures (including yourself) you see within 30 ft of you. A scale, only visible to you and other Karmic Warriors, appears above the target(s), leaning to the left for Positive Karma and right for Negative Karma. Karma is decided by the DM, not only taking into account a creature’s alignment but also the actions they’ve taken in their life. A PC’s karma is decided by the player in control of said character. Unless suffering from the blindness condition, you can always see the Scales of Justice, including behind cover, so long as the target(s) stay in range. You can target a number of creatures equal to your proficiency bonus when activating the Scales of Karma.
You also gain a Karmic Save DC. The DC is equal to 8 + your Proficiency bonus + your Wisdom Modifier.
Sustaining the Scales of Karma on a target requires concentration checks when taking damage. If a target leaves the range of the Scales, they unlock from the target and all effects on that target end.
Blessings and Curses
In the eyes of the Scales, you get exactly what you deserve, be it blessing or curse. Depending on the outcome of the scales upon a target, you can grant blessings or curses.
Starting at 3rd level, as a bonus action while the Scales of Karma are active on at least one target, you can make all targets of the Scales of Karma roll a Wis Saving Throw against your Karmic Save DC. On a failure, you roll on the Blessings and Curses table to bestow a buff or debuff on all targets of the Scales depending on their Karma. Creatures with positive karma receive a blessing while those with negative karma receive a curse. When the Scales are active on multiple targets, you only roll once on the table to determine all blessings/curses. Targets can choose to fail on purpose, gaining a blessing or curse as listed above. On a success, the target suffers no curse or blessing.
Each target of the Scales can only receive one blessing or curse at a time, lasting for a minute each. A blessing/curse also ends when concentration on the Scales are broken, or a target leaves the range of the Scales of Karma.
You can use this ability a number of times equal to your proficiency modifier per short rest.
| Roll(d6) | Blessing | Curses |
|---|---|---|
| 1-2 | Targets gain temp hp equal to twice your Fighter level. | Targets suffer disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks. |
| 3-4 | Targets gain 15 ft to Walking Speed and opportunity attacks against them are made at disadvantage. | Targets Walking Speed is decreased by 15 ft and opportunity attacks against them are made at advantage. |
| 5-6 | Add a number equal to half your proficiency bonus to Attack rolls, Ability Checks or Saving throws made by the targets. | Subtract a number equal to half your proficiency bonus to Attack rolls, Ability Checks, or Saving Throws made by the targets. |
Reprieve and Retribution
You’ve become more acutely aware of the power the Scales of Karma hold over beings under their judgment. You gain the ability to bestow karmic retribution or reprieve amongst targets.
Starting at 7th level, once per short rest when a target is given a blessing or curse, you can also impart karmic reprieve or retribution on top of their blessing or curse. You may only target one creature with Reprieve and Retribution, choosing from those under the effects of the Scales of Karma.
- Reprieve is tied to blessings, being imparted upon those with positive karma. Until the start of your next turn, the target gains resistance to all bludgeoning, slashing and piercing damage.
- Retribution is tied to curses, being imparted upon those with negative karma. Until the start of your next turn, the target loses all resistances it has.
You gain an additional use of Reprieve and Retribution at 15th level.
Inescapable Scales
You've gained better control over the karma of others, drawing out their karmic blessings or curses with ease.
Starting at 10th level, you no longer need to force targets of the Scales of Karma to make a Wis save against your Karmic Save DC to bestow a blessing or curse upon them. Instead, you can force a target to make a Wis save against your Karmic Save DC to bestow Reprieve or Retribution upon a them as a part of the Blessings and Curses bonus action.
Karmic Justice
You’ve learned to enhance the effects of Reprieve and Retribution, allowing you to impart Karmic Justice to those under the judgement of the Scales.
Starting at 15th level, when you use Reprieve and Retribution, you add the following additional effects to the existing effects.
Karmic Justice: Reprieve. When dealing damage, the target deals additional Radiant damage equal to half your Proficiency bonus until the end of their Reprieve effect.
Karmic Justice: Retribution. When dealing damage, the target takes Radiant damage equal half your Proficiency bonus until the end of their Retribution effect.
Tip the Scales
As you’ve gained more experience in battling the stains and bastards of this world, you’ve come to learn the Scales of Karma lack nuance, simply weighing the deeds of targets against themselves, leading to those seeking redemption being judged harshly and those who’d turn mad to be judged kindly. You’ve learned how to tip the scales as you see fit, at a cost.
Starting at 18th level, as an action, you can cause the Scales of Karma to lean in the same direction for all creatures under their effects, regardless of their positive or negative karma. All effects of the opposite karma are changed to their equivalent, opposite effect.
This effect lasts 1 hour, until used again, or until cancelled as an action. It can be used a number of times equal to your Wisdom Modifier per long rest.
