Ranger
Base Class: Ranger

Your connection to the natural world takes the form of a dragon egg, which you come across in your travels as a ranger. Discuss this with your DM to make sure it's worked into the story if starting from 1st level.  As your powers grow, your dragon's grows as well, blossoming from a small four-legged companion to a majestic winged creature large and strong enough for you to ride. Along the way, you gain an increasing share in the awe-inspiring power of dragons.

Consider where the dragon egg  you have came from and why you bonded with it. The Dragon tamer Origin table offers examples.

Dragon Tamer Origin
d6 Origin
1 You found an abanndoned egg/stone after a brutal earthquake and mining accident, turns out to be a dragon's egg.
2 A secret order of rangers who collect and guard dragon eggs taught you their ways.
3 A powerful Archfey gave you a geode, gemstone or crystal to care for. To your surprise, a dragon hatched from it.
4 You accuired a gorgous gemstone or geode from a merchant. it later hatched into a dragon.
5 A dying greatwyrm intrusted thier last cluster of eggs to you, unfortunely only one egg was viable.
6 You had a vivid dream of a mysterious figure accompanied by seven yellow canaries, who warned you of impending doom. When you awoke, your dragon was there, watching you.

Draconic Gift

Starting at 3rd level the day finally comes when your dragon egg hatches. Having cared for the egg, the dragon hatchling imprints on you creating a connection to dragonkind, and granting you an empowering understanding with it's presence. You gain the following benefits:

Thaumaturgy. You learn the thaumaturgy cantrip, which is a ranger spell for you.

Tongue of Dragons. You learn to speak, read, and write Draconic or one other language of your choice.

Dragon Companion

Your dragon is friendly to you, and it obeys your commands. See its game statistics in the accompanying Dragon Companion stat block, which uses your proficiency bonus (PB) in several places. Whenever the dragon egg hatches, choose a dragon type listed in its Draconic Bloodline trait. You can determine the cosmetic characteristics of the dragon, such as its color, its scale texture, or any visible effect if it makes sense to the Draconic Bloodline; your choice has an effect on its attacks, but not it's other game statistics.

In combat, the dragon shares your initiative count, but it takes its turn immediately after yours. It can move and use its actions on its own, but the only action it takes on its turn is the Dodge action, unless you take a free action on your turn to command it to take another action. You can only command it once per turn and, it must be done before the start of the dragon's turn. That action can be one in its stat block or some other action. If you are incapacitated, the dragon can take any action of its choice, not just Dodge.

Amethyst Dragon

Amethyst dragons are considered wise and majestic even by dragon standards, but they are aloof and pay little heed to conflicts between good and evil or chaos and law, as they believed them to be nothing but petty squabbles. They favor talking things out rather than fighting, but consider retreating, ambushing, and hiding to be dishonorable.

Black Dragon

Black dragons are the most evil-tempered and vile of all the dragons, but they are not the largest. They loathe seeing the weak prosper and revel in death, decay and mayham. They are solitary creatures that live in swamps and marshlands, killing indiscriminately and which makes it difficult to bond with them.

Blue Dragon

Blue dragons, are among the most vain and prideful of all dragons. They take great pleasure in wielding their power, engaging in combat or lording over humanoids and other lesser creatures just to prove that they can do so. A blue dragon might forgive insults, but it reacts with rage to any insinuation that it is weak or inferior.

Brass Dragon

Brass dragons are known for being the most gregarious of the true dragons and for their love of conversation. They are bold, talkative, and can engage in lengthy conversations with friends and foes alike. Brass dragons will even follow intelligent creatures that try to leave without talking to them.

Bronze Dragon

Bronze dragons are curious and inquisitive, they also possess a strong sense of justice and do not tolerate any form of cruelty. They truly enjoy observing and interacting with smaller creatures, most especially humans. They often go out of their way to help humans, such as rescuing them from shipwrecks or dangerous foes.

Copper Dragon

Copper dragons are usually even-tempered and sociable. They are well known for playing pranks and telling jokes and riddles. They enjoy a good joke, riddle, funny story, or any form of good humor or wit, but become annoyed if someone doesn't laugh at a joke that they make or take their pranks well.

Crystal Dragon

Crystal dragons are aloof, solitary, and self-centered, but are friendly, and curious of other planar travelers. They enjoy conversing with the many other creatures they meet on their journeys, although they spent most of their time alone travaling the planes.

Emerald Dragon

Emerald dragons are deeply inquisitive, with a keen interest in local customs and history. They often exceed the greatest human scholars for knowledge in particular fields of study. Nevertheless, they would rather only observe, and document events rather then getting involved.

Gold Dragon

Gold dragons are graceful and wise, and are relentless and dedicated foes of evil, injustice, and foul play. While respected for their fairness and knowledge, they are also grim and reserved, and usually avoid casual contact with others.

Green Dragon

Green dragons are known to have very bad tempers, but a tendency for lies and deceit. They love intrigue and secrets, and put up a front of feigned diplomacy and friendship when dealing with stronger foes. They reveal their cruel and petty nature when it comes to intimidating lesser beings or when they gain the upper hand in a situation.

Red Dragon

Red dragons are known for their quick and fiery tempers. They can become impulsive and vengeful when angered, and may explode into a destructive rage. They believe they are the pinnacle of draconic nature and all other dragon species have departed from this purity. They value vengefulness, rapaciousness, avarice, and ferocity above all other traits and recognize these traits in themselves with pride.

Sapphire Dragon

Sapphire dragons are known for being territorial, antisocial, militaristic, and warlike. They enjoy discussing military strategy and often live in the Underdark, where they consider all evil races to be their enemies.

Silver Dragon

Silver dragons are known for being friendly, noble, adventurous, and powerful. They are also known as dragons of virtue and are said to have a close bond with humans and other civilized people. Silver dragons believe in living a moral life, which means doing good deeds and try to avoid harming other sentient beings.

Topaz Dragon

Topaz dragons are generally not malicious, but they can be unfriendly, selfish, and erratic, making them unpleasant and dangerous to deal with. They rarely tolerate other creatures and are often indifferent to their own kind. They are known to live in underwater lairs, however, their homes are always bone dry. They love lounging on outcroppings or beaches lashed by the waves and hunting squid or sharks.

White Dragon

White dragons are remarkably bestial creatures, even though they are as intelligent as other dragons. They care little for intricate schemes or political power, preferring to live their lives as cruel hunters, collectors of treasure, and fine humaniod ice sculptures. They rely more on instinct than on intellect in dealing with other creatures, and have a tendenancy to have one of three reactions, mate it, eat it, turn it into an ice sculpture.

Maturation

At 7th level the bond you share with your dragon intensifies, stoking the dragon’s inner magic. Your dragon goes on a growth spurt, growing wings on its back and webbed feet giving it a swim speed equal to it's walking speed and a flying speed equal to its walking speed. In addition, your dragon grows to Medium size and allows you to use them as a mount if your character size is medium or smaller and you have a saddle. While you are riding your dragon, it can’t use the flying speed of this feature. As the dragon matures it's stat block changes slighty as follows.

Dragon Rider

Starting at 11th level, your mastery as a Dragon Tamer becomes apparent. You are a dangerous foe to face while mounted on your dragon. While you are mounted and aren't incapacitated, you gain the following benefits;

  • You have advantage on saving throws made to avoid falling off your dragon.
  • You have advantage on melee attack rolls against any unmounted creature that is smaller than your dragon.
  • You can use your reaction to redirect an attack targeted at your dragon to target you instead.
  • If your dragon is subjected to an effect that allows it to make a Dexterity saving throw to take only half damage, it instead takes no damage if it succeeds on the saving throw, and only half damage if it fails.
  • Finally, mounting or dismounting your dragon costs you only 5 feet of movement, rather than half your speed.

Bonded Growth

Starting at 15th level the dragon grows to Large size, and it's stat block changes a little more. When you ride your dragon, it is no longer prohibited from using it's flying speed and, it is now double it's walking speed when unsaddled, or 60 ft. when saddled. Your bond to your dragon has reached the pinnacle of its power. While you are mounted on your dragon, and you aren't incapacitated,  you and the dragon gain the following benefits:

  • Reflexive Resistance. When either you or the dragon takes damage while you’re within 30 feet of each other, you can use your reaction to give yourself or the dragon resistance to that instance of damage. You can use this reaction a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
  • Spells you cast that target only you normally, also target your Dragon.
