Base Class: Sorcerer
Introduction: Harnessing the latent powers of the mind, the Psychic Mind Sorcerer taps into the deepest reaches of the arcane Weave through mental prowess rather than traditional magical conduits. These sorcerers delve into the mysteries of telepathy, telekinesis, and psychic defenses, using their minds as both shield and weapon. Masters of mental manipulation, they influence the battlefield by controlling and devastating foes, protecting allies, and sometimes bending the laws of reality itself.
Psychic Origin (1st Level): Your mind has always been different, attuned deeply to the Weave. You gain the following benefits:
- Telepathic Communication: You can communicate telepathically with any willing creature you can see within 30 feet of you. The creature doesn't need to share a language with you but must be able to understand at least one language.
- Detect Thoughts: You can cast Detect Thoughts a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of once), and you regain all expended uses upon completing a long rest. This does not count against your number of sorcerer spells known.
Telekinesis (6th Level): You can cast the Telekinesis spell once without using a spell slot. After casting it this way, you must complete a long rest before you can do so again. This casting does not count against your number of sorcerer spells known. Additionally, when you cast Telekinesis using this feature or a spell slot, you can maintain concentration on the spell for up to 20 minutes, extending its typical duration to better control the battlefield.
Enhanced Psychic Mobility (6th Level): In addition to your telekinetic abilities, you have mastered the psychic manipulation of your own body's position and movement. You can cast the [spell]Fly[/spell] spell on yourself without using a spell slot. This self-flight costs 3 sorcery points each time it is used, and you cannot cast it on other creatures. You can use this ability once per long rest.
Psychic Force Field (14th Level): You learn to create a barrier of psychic energy that protects you and your allies. As an action, you can spend 3 sorcery points to create a force field that lasts for 1 minute. While active, you and any allies within 10 feet of you have advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Psychic Fury (14th Level): Your mental assaults can overwhelm the minds of your enemies. Once per long rest, you can unleash a wave of psychic energy as an action. Each hostile creature within 20 feet of you must make an Intelligence saving throw against your spell save DC. On a failed save, a creature takes 2d10 + your Charisma modifier psychic damage and is stunned until the end of your next turn. On a successful save, the creature takes half damage and isn't stunned.
Phoenix Ascension (18th Level): In moments of dire peril, your psychic power can bring you back from the brink of death. Once per long rest, if you are reduced to 0 hit points and don't die outright, you can choose to drop to 1 hit point instead. Additionally, each hostile creature within 30 feet of you immediately takes 10d10 psychic damage.
Creating a Psychic Mind Character: When creating a Psychic Mind Sorcerer, consider the source of your psychic abilities and how they have shaped your life and adventures. These details can add depth to your character and provide a rich backstory to explore in your campaigns.
Origins of Power:
- Mystical Awakening: Perhaps your powers awakened during a near-death experience, or they were unlocked through an ancient ritual or a brush with a powerful artifact.
- Psionic Inheritance: Your psychic abilities might be inherited, emerging from a long lineage of mind mages or a celestial or aberrant bloodline.
- Mutant Ability:A rare few may find the root of their powers in mutation, their minds evolved or altered to wield psychic forces as naturally as breathing.
- Gift of the Weave: Consider the possibility that your connection to the Weave is a rare gift from a deity of knowledge and magic, charging you with balancing the flow of thoughts and emotions in the world.
Building Your Character:
- Alignment: Psychic Mind Sorcerers can be of any alignment, but their powers often lead them towards alignments reflecting their control over others and their understanding of power. Consider how using your abilities influences your alignment—are you a benevolent protector or a manipulative tyrant?
- Skills: Focus on skills like Insight, Deception, and Persuasion, which complement your abilities to read and influence thoughts.
- Feats: Opt for feats like "Telepathic" or "Telekinetic" from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything to enhance your psychic capabilities, or "War Caster" to maintain concentration on your psychic spells during battle.
- Spells: Choose spells that reflect your control over the mind and space. Detect Thoughts, Hold Person, Telekinesis, and Mind Spike are excellent thematic choices.
Role in the Party: As a Psychic Mind Sorcerer, you often act as the party’s scout and diplomat, using your abilities to gather information without detection and manipulate social interactions. In combat, your role shifts to controlling the battlefield, disabling enemies, and protecting allies with your psychic prowess.
Character Goals:
- Master of the Mind: You might be driven by a desire to expand your psychic powers to their utmost limits, seeking ancient texts, learning from other psionic practitioners, or exploring places of strong magical energy.
- Protector of Secrets: Perhaps you use your abilities to guard knowledge that must not fall into the wrong hands, positioning yourself as a guardian of both physical and mental fortresses.
Potential Conflicts:
- Fear and Mistrust: Your powers can make others wary or fearful. How do you handle their suspicion or hostility? Does it lead you to isolation, or do you strive to win their trust?
- Control vs. Freedom: The temptation to control others can be a constant challenge. How does your character balance the ethical implications of their powers with the practical benefits?
Psychic Origin
When you choose this origin at 1st level, you gain the ability to establish telepathic communication with any willing creature you can see within 30 feet. Thus, you can communicate silently with the creature for up to 10 minutes. This ability allows you to bypass language barriers, but the creature must be capable of understanding at least one language.
Additionally, as part of your deepening psychic abilities, you can cast the Detect Thoughts spell without using a spell slot. You can use this ability a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of once), and you regain all expended uses upon completing a long rest. This does not count against your number of sorcerer spells known.
Using Detect Thoughts, you can probe deeper into the psyche of a creature, gaining insight into its reasoning, its emotional state, and something that looms large in its mind—such as something it worries over, loves, or hates. This insight can be invaluable in social interactions, negotiations, and combat, making you a formidable sorcerer from the outset of your journey.
Telekinesis
When you reach 6th level, your psychic abilities expand to allow you to manipulate the physical world with the power of your mind. You can cast the Telekinesis spell once without using a spell slot. After casting it this way, you must complete a long rest before you can do so again. This casting does not count against your number of sorcerer spells known. Additionally, when you cast [spell]Telekinesis[/spell] using this feature or a spell slot, you can maintain concentration on the spell for up to 20 minutes, extending its typical duration to better control the battlefield.
Psychic Force Field
At 14th level, your mastery over psychic energy allows you to manifest a protective shield, not just around yourself but also encompassing your allies. You gain the ability to create a Psychic Force Field with the following properties:
Psychic Shield: As an action, you can expend 3 sorcery points to generate a psychic energy field that envelops you and your allies within 10 feet. This shimmering barrier lasts for 1 minute and grants several defensive benefits:
- Advantage on Saves: You and any allies standing within the field have advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects. This can be crucial in turning the tide during battles involving powerful spellcasters or dangerous magical creatures.
- Psychic Resilience: The force field also provides a measure of protection against psychic and mental attacks, reflecting your deepening connection to the psychic energies you manipulate.
This force field is a manifestation of your will, a tangible expression of your mental fortitude that can protect and bolster your companions in the heat of battle.
Psychic Fury
At 14th level, you unlock the ability to unleash the full wrath of your psychic powers upon your enemies. You gain the following feature:
Mental Assault: Once per long rest, you can use an action to release a devastating wave of psychic energy. This ability manifests as an intense burst that radiates outward from you, reaching all hostile creatures within a 20-foot radius.
- Psychic Damage: Each affected hostile creature must make an Intelligence saving throw against your spell save DC. On a failed save, a creature takes 2d10 + your Charisma modifier in psychic damage, reflecting the overwhelming force of your mental attack.
- Stunning Impact: Additionally, any creature that fails its saving throw is stunned until the end of your next turn, incapacitated by the sheer intensity of the psychic onslaught. This can disrupt enemy actions and provide a tactical advantage in battle.
- Half Damage on Success: Creatures that succeed on their saving throw still take half damage but are not stunned. This ensures that your psychic fury always has a significant impact, regardless of the enemies' mental fortitude.
Psychic Fury is a testament to your mastery over the mind's destructive potentials, making you a formidable sorcerer both in and out of combat.
Phoenix Ascension
At the pinnacle of your power, you gain the ability to transcend mortal peril through sheer force of will. When you reach level 18, this extraordinary ability, known as Phoenix Ascension, grants you the following benefits:
Rise from Peril:
- Death's Defiance: Once per long rest, if you are reduced to 0 hit points and are not killed outright, you can choose to instead fall to 1 hit point. This choice must be made as soon as you are reduced to 0 hit points.
- Explosive Retaliation: Simultaneously, as you defy death, each hostile creature within 30 feet of you suffers an intense psychic backlash. This manifests as a surge of psychic energy that deals 10d10 psychic damage.
- Unavoidable Impact: There is no saving throw against this damage; the raw energy released is too sudden and too powerful for enemies to evade or resist.
This feature symbolizes your unyielding spirit and connection to the psychic energies that fuel your magic. The dramatic resurgence not only inspires allies but also instills fear in your adversaries, marking a key moment of triumph over adversity.
Enhanced Psychic Mobility
In addition to your telekinetic abilities, you have mastered the psychic manipulation of your own body's position and movement. You can cast the Fly spell on yourself without using a spell slot. This self-flight costs 3 sorcery points each time it is used, and you cannot cast it on other creatures. You can use this ability once per long rest.
