Base Class: Barbarian
Whether it be protecting a politician from hungry reporters or a wizard from ravenous gnolls, a bodyguard's life is flush with danger and cash. Not just muscle for hire, bodyguards have to think fast and move faster. They have to see every threat coming, read every weakness and block every thrown bottle (usually by throwing a table at the offending drunkard). If you hire the services of a bodyguard, you'll be the safest person in town, at least until the cash and drink stops flowing...
Guard Dog
Starting when you choose this path at 3rd level, your wrath is powered by your drive to protect, becoming a bulwark between your allies and harm. As a bonus action while you are raging, you can enter a Warding Stance. While in this stance, you gain the following abilities:
- Meat Shield. You choose one creature within 5 feet of you to become your ward. That creature gains a bonus to their AC equal to your rage damage bonus while they are within 5 feet of you. You can choose a different creature to become your ward as a bonus action.
- Lawful Retribution. When a creature you can see makes an attack roll against your ward, you can use your reaction to make a weapon attack against them. If your attack hits, the creature has disadvantage on the attack roll against your ward.
You can use the same bonus action to enter your rage and Warding Stance, and it lasts until your rage ends or until you end it as a free action.
Leap Into Action
Also at 3rd level, your quick reflexes can make the difference between life and death for your friends. On your first turn in combat, your movement speed is doubled, and your movements do not provoke opportunity attacks.
Chaperone
At 6th level, your powerful stride can guide your allies into danger or away from it. When you have a ward and move on your turn, your ward can use their reaction to move with you, provided they stay within 5 feet of you and do not move on their next turn. They cannot move further than their movement speed, and can choose to end this movement at any time.
In addition, you can move through the space of other creatures, regardless of size, with no movement penalty. Your ward also gains this benefit.
Practical Strategist
At 10th level, your experience handling dangerous situations has taught you to take control in moments of crisis. When an ally within 10 feet of you takes damage, you can speak a command to produce one of the following effects:
- The damaged ally can immediately move up to their movement speed, without provoking opportunity attacks.
- The damaged ally gains advantage on the next saving throw they make until the end of their next turn.
- An ally within 10 feet of you can use the Dodge, Search or [Tooltip Not Found] action.
- An ally within 10 feet of you can make a single weapon attack.
You can use this ability an amount of times equal to your proficiency bonus per long rest.
Security Detail
At 14th level, your companions have your back, just like you have had theirs time after time. When you are targeted by an attack roll by a creature they can see, an ally within 10 feet of you can use their reaction to use your Lawful Retribution ability. While you are raging, you and your ward's movements do not provoke opportunity attacks.
