Wizard
Base Class: Wizard

Nothing sharpens the mind more than the game of chess. It's number of moves only limited due to the number of spaces on the board. So what if you considered everything part of your board? What if the world moved according to your whims? It's all just a game to you now....isn't it?

Level 3: Game Start

At level 3 when you choose this subclass, you gain the ability to designate your Pieces on the board. Your only available pieces to designate at this level are Pawns. As an Action, you may designate any number of willing creatures up to your Intelligence  modifier within 30 ft. of you to be one of your Pieces. Each piece has its own rules to them that you must abide by. Once you designate your Pieces you can not do so again until you have completed a Long Rest.

Catalan Defense - At level 3 you begin your focus with the opening move. You know that the first move can dictate the entire game. When initiative begins you may choose up to two of your Pawns to gain Advantage on their Initiative rolls. You may use this ability once per Long Rest.

You also gain Proficiency with the Dragonchess Set.

Pawns: You may not designate yourself as a Pawn. If a Pawn moves its total movement speed in a straight line, it may move an additional 10 ft along that same straight line. If at least two Pawns are adjacent to the same target, each Pawn may add your Intelligence modifier to an Attack Roll. They may each use this once per time they are designated as a Pawn. They may add this bonus after the result is known.

Bishop: Your Bishops gain advantage on sight-based Perception checks. If a Bishop is Attacking with a Ranged Attack, it gains Advantage on the first Attack it makes each turn. You may only designate up to 2 Bishops at a time.

Rook: You may not designate yourself as a Rook. Rooks gain a bonus to their Armor Class equal to your Intelligence modifier. You may only designate up to 2 Rooks at a time.

Knight: Your Knights gain advantage on Survival checks and immunity from Charm and Fear. If the only ally adjacent to an enemy is a Knight, the Knight gains Advantage on Attacks against it. You may only designate up to 2 Knights at a time.

Queen: You may not designate yourself as your Queen. At the beginning of each of your Queen's turns, they gain temporary hit points equal to twice your Proficiency Bonus. Your Queen gains Expertise on their Attack Rolls. You may only designate one Queen at a time.

King: You may only designate yourself as King. You have different abilities based on what Pieces you have available.

  1. If you have a Pawn that is adjacent to more than one enemy, once a round you may allow for a Pawn to use its Reaction at the end of an adjacent enemy's turn to move itself 5 ft without provoking attacks of opportunity. Each creature that was flanking that Pawn before it moved must make a Charisma Saving Throw versus your Spell Save DC or be Charmed by you until the beginning of your next turn.
  2. If you have a Bishop, you can teleport 30 ft closer to it along a straight line as a Bonus Action. When one of your Bishops makes a Ranged Attack, you may cast a Ranged cantrip as a Reaction that only has one target. The target must be the same as the Bishop's.
  3. If you have a Rook and it is adjacent to you, the first Attack Roll against you each turn has disadvantage against you and you have advantage on Saving Throws against effects you can see.
  4. If you have a Knight, your movement speed doubles. When your Knights make a Melee Attack you may use your Reaction to cast a Melee Attack Cantrip from your Knight's location.
  5. If you have a Queen and you would be subject to damage or be forced to throw a Saving Throw, you may teleport to a space adjacent to your Queen as a Reaction, carrying all your belongings with you. After you use this ability you may not use it again until you finish a Long Rest.

Level 6: Cochrane Defense

At level 6 you begin focusing on building up your defenses. You may now designate your pieces as Bishops or Rooks following the appropriate rules. In addition, when one of your pieces within 60 ft of you is hit by an Attack or fails a Saving Throw, you may use your Reaction to add your Intelligence modifier to their AC or Saving Throw Roll, possibly making the Attack miss or allowing the Saving Throw to pass. Once you use  this ability you may not use it again until you finish a Long Rest.

Level 10: Scandinavian Tour

At level 10 you boast a strong defense and can now focus on the movement of your Pieces. You may now appoint Knights and a Queen as you designate your pieces. In addition, if an enemy ends their turn adjacent to one of your Pieces, that Piece may spend its Reaction to move 10 ft without provoking Attacks of Opportunity.

King of the Castle

At level 14, your prowess in gamesmanship shines above all others. You may now designate yourself as the King. As a Bonus Action, you may teleport to a space adjacent to one of your Pieces that are within 30 ft of you, bringing all your belongings with you. There must be space for you to teleport and you can not bring anyone else with you. You may use teleport in this manner a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus.

You also gain Expertise with the Dragonchess Set.
