Sorcerer
Base Class: Sorcerer

Sorcerers who manifest as Mana Wardens are rare individuals whose bodies act as living conduits for raw magical energy. Unlike other magic users, who draw upon external sources like deities, nature, or ancient tomes, Mana Wardens are suffused with the primal essence of magic itself. From birth—or sometimes due to exposure to extreme magical phenomena—their very being has become intertwined with the flows of arcane energy that bind the multiverse together. This gift is as much a curse as it is a blessing. Mana Wardens are inherently powerful, capable of feats that even the most seasoned Archmagis struggle to replicate. However, the constant torrent of energy coursing through their bodies comes at a steep price. Mana Wardens often experience wild surges of energy, unpredictable magical effects, or physical tolls from channeling the immense power they were born to carry. Their lives are defined by learning to master this volatile energy, often through sheer willpower and relentless practice.

A Mana Warden’s presence often affects their surroundings, even unintentionally. Flickers of light, crackling energy, or changes in the environment might follow them wherever they go. This connection to raw mana can make them revered or feared, depending on those they encounter. To others, they are walking beacons of power—symbols of magic unrestrained and unrefined. Yet, many Mana Wardens find themselves isolated, struggling to forge bonds with others due to the destructive nature of their abilities. As a result, they often walk a lonely path, seeking to control their gift while using it to shape the world around them.

Mana Wardens are defined by their raw connection to magic. While other sorcerous origins might draw power from extraplanar beings or cosmic phenomena, Mana Wardens are living embodiments of mana itself. Their powers tend to manifest as surges of pure force, arcane explosions, and abilities that manipulate magic around them. They excel at disrupting enemy casters, overpowering magical defenses, and channeling the overwhelming energy they contain into devastating effects. This raw power, however, does not come without consequences. Mana Wardens often have to tread carefully, as their abilities put immense strain on their bodies. They can amplify their spells beyond normal limits, but doing so leaves them physically drained or damaged. Similarly, their connection to mana means they sometimes draw unwanted attention—from curious scholars to power-hungry wizards, and even planar entities that seek to harness or suppress their gifts.

Level 1: Innate Surge

As an action, you can release a burst of pure mana in a 15-foot radius. Each creature of your choice within this radius must make a Constitution saving throw against your Sorcerer spell save DC. On a failed save, a creature takes 2d8 + your Charisma modifier of force damage, or half as much on a success. You can use this ability once per short or long rest. At 6th level, you can use it twice per short or long rest and gain an extra d8. At 14th level, you can use it three times per short or long rest and gain an extra d8. At 18th level, you can use it four times per short or long rest and gain an extra 2d8.

Level 1: Mana Resilience

Your innate connection to mana has altered your very being, granting you resilience against the forces of magic. The constant flow of arcane energy through your body has made you resistant to force damage, as your body instinctively disperses incoming arcane energy before it can harm you.

Moreover, your awareness of mana surges enables you to react to magical attacks with preternatural precision. When you are struck by a spell or magical effect, you can use your reaction to mitigate some of the damage by redirecting the mana flow. This redirection reduces the damage you take by an amount equal to your Charisma modifier, representing your ability to harmonize and balance arcane energy within yourself. This feature not only symbolizes your attunement to magic but also reflects the protective qualities of a body naturally in tune with the raw, unfiltered power of mana.

Level 1: Innate Spells

You gain access to the following spells as part of your subclass. These spells are always considered sorcerer spells for you, and you can learn them at the appropriate levels.

Spell Level Spells
1st Magic Missile, Shield
3rd Shatter, Nystul's Magic Aura
5th Counterspell, Dispel Magic
7th Arcane Eye, Resilient Sphere
9th Bigby’s Hand, Wall of Force

Level 6: Overflowing Power

Your ability to channel mana has grown to new heights, but with it comes greater risks. When you cast a spell, you can choose to amplify it by pushing raw magical energy into the spell, increasing its potency. By doing so, you add an additional damage die to the spell’s damage roll, unleashing a blast of power beyond what most spellcasters can achieve. However, this power does not come without a cost. After casting an amplified spell, your body suffers from the strain of channeling such volatile energy. You take force damage equal to twice the spell’s level, a toll that cannot be avoided or reduced. This self-inflicted harm is a manifestation of the sheer intensity of the mana surging through you, threatening to overwhelm your physical form.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of once) per long rest. Overflowing Power reflects the double-edged nature of your gift: unparalleled destructive potential at the risk of self-harm, demanding precise control and careful timing.

Level 14: Mana Absorption

Your mastery over the flow of mana has reached a level where you can siphon energy from external sources. Whenever a spell is cast within 30 feet of you, your body instinctively reacts to the magic in the air, allowing you to absorb a fragment of its power. By focusing this energy, you gain temporary hit points equal to the spell’s level + your Charisma modifier. This absorption protects you from harm, turning the enemy’s magic into a shield for yourself.

Additionally, your connection to mana enables you to disrupt spells of lesser power. If a spell’s level is equal to or lower than your proficiency bonus, you can choose to end the spell as part of your reaction. The spell’s magic is absorbed into your being and nullified, rendering its effects void. Once you use this ability to cancel a spell, you cannot do so again until you finish a long rest.

Mana Absorption represents your evolving relationship with mana—not just as a source of power, but as a force you can manipulate, shape, and even turn against your enemies.

Level 18: Arcane Conduit

At the pinnacle of your power, your body has fully adapted to its role as a vessel for raw mana. As an action, you can enter a heightened state of arcane flow for 1 minute, becoming a true embodiment of magic itself. During this time, your spells are imbued with extraordinary potency:

  • When you cast a spell, you can treat it as if cast with a spell slot one level higher than the slot you expend, up to a maximum of 9th level. This enhancement represents your ability to draw additional mana from the surrounding environment, effortlessly elevating the power of your magic.
  • All spells you cast deal an additional die of force damage, reflecting the raw energy suffusing your magic during this state.
  • However, this immense power comes at a cost. At the end of each of your turns, your body suffers strain as the mana flow intensifies. You take force damage equal to your Sorcerer level, a constant reminder of the dangers of wielding such unrestrained energy.

Once you use this feature, you cannot do so again until you finish a long rest. Arcane Conduit represents the culmination of your journey as a Mana Warden: a state of unparalleled power where you embody the raw might of the arcane—but at the risk of your own survival. This ability captures the essence of the Mana Warden as a living conduit, wielding the magic of the multiverse in its purest form.
