The Oath of the Penitent is a solemn vow taken by those who dedicate themselves to Ilmater, the Crying God, embracing suffering to protect others and bring solace to the weary. These paladins do not seek glory or renown but willingly bear the burdens of others, standing as a shield against pain and injustice. Their power is rooted in endurance, compassion, and the quiet strength found in self-sacrifice.


Tenets of the Penitent

Paladins who swear the Oath of the Penitent adhere to a set of tenets that guide their every action:

  • Endure Pain: Accept suffering willingly to protect others, finding strength in hardship.
  • Offer Comfort: Bring solace to those who are in pain, both physical and emotional.
  • Protect the Weak: Stand as a shield for the vulnerable and the oppressed.
  • Resist Vengeance: Forgive rather than retaliate, seeking to heal rather than harm.

Level 3: Oath of the Penitent Spells

The magic of your oath ensures you always have certain spells ready; when you reach a Paladin level specified in the Oath of the Penitent Spells table, you thereafter always have the listed spells prepared.

Level 3: Sacred Weapon

When you take the Attack action, you can expend one use of your Channel Divinity to imbue one Melee weapon that you are holding with positive energy. For 10 minutes or until you use this feature again, you add your Charisma modifier to attack rolls you make with that weapon (minimum bonus of +1), and each time you hit with it, you cause it to deal its normal damage type or Radiant damage.

The weapon also emits Bright Light in a 20-foot radius and Dim Light 20 feet beyond that.

You can end this effect early (no action required). This effect also ends if you aren’t carrying the weapon.

Level 7: Aura of Endurance

Starting at 7th level, your presence bolsters those around you to endure hardship. Allies within 10 feet of you gain resistance to nonmagical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage. Additionally, when an ally within your aura is reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright, they drop to 1 hit point instead. This effect can trigger once per ally per long rest.

At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.

Level 15: Bastion of Compassion

At 15th level, your unwavering resolve allows you to bear the brunt of suffering for others. When you take damage, you can use your reaction to grant temporary hit points equal to your Charisma modifier + your paladin level to all allies within 30 feet of you. These temporary hit points last for 1 minute.

Additionally, you have advantage on saving throws against being frightened or charmed.

Level 20: Vessel of Martyrdom

At 20th level, you can transform into a radiant avatar of Ilmater’s mercy, becoming a beacon of hope and endurance. As an action, you gain the following benefits for 1 minute:

  • You emit an aura of divine light in a 30-foot radius. Allies within the aura regain hit points equal to your Charisma modifier at the start of their turns.
  • You gain resistance to all damage.
  • When an ally within your aura takes damage, you can choose to absorb that damage into yourself as no action required.
  • You have advantage on all saving throws.

Once you use this feature, you cannot do so again until you finish a long rest.

  • You emit an aura of divine light in a 30-foot radius. Allies within the aura regain hit points equal to your Charisma modifier at the start of their turns.
  • You gain resistance to all damage.
  • When an ally within your aura takes damage, you can choose to absorb that damage into yourself as no action required.
  • You have advantage on all saving throws.
