Base Class: Wizard
"The storm within me is as much a part of my magic as the spells I cast. When it surges, I fight with the fury of the elements themselves."
Wild Soul of Battle
Some wizards struggle to control the raw magic within them, and their emotions amplify this volatile power. The Wild Soul of Battle embodies this uncontrollable surge, granting them the ability to momentarily transform into a martial combatant, driven by their emotions. During these outbursts, the wizard becomes a fearsome force on the battlefield, wielding weaponry with newfound strength and fury.
These unpredictable outbursts often turn the fragile wizard into a whirlwind of martial prowess, trading precision spellcasting for raw, physical power. However, this transformation is not without cost, leaving them drained and vulnerable once their emotions subside.
For Wild Souls, their emotions are their greatest strength—and their greatest curse. Anger, fear, joy, and despair can all shape their abilities, manifesting as fiery rage, impenetrable resilience, or wild bursts of speed. Though some try to temper their volatile nature, others embrace the chaos, wielding it as a weapon against those who would dare stand in their way.
Level 3: Arcane Outburst
Starting at 2nd level your emotions often trigger unpredictable bursts of arcane power. Whenever you cast a spell of 1st level or higher or take damage, roll a d20. On a roll of 1 or 2, an Arcane Outburst occurs, transforming you into a martial combatant for 1 minute. The transformation may also occur if you experience strong emotional stress, such as intense fear, anger, or despair.
While transformed, you gain the following benefits:
- Unarmored Defense: Your AC equals 10 + your Dexterity modifier + your Intelligence modifier (if you aren't wearing armor).
- Martial Instincts: You gain proficiency with martial weapons and can conjure a magical weapon that lasts until the transformation ends. This weapon uses your Intelligence modifier for attack and damage rolls.
Emotional Resonance: Choose or let the DM decide your emotional state. Your abilities are influenced by your feelings during the transformation. You can choose from the following emotional states:
- Anger: You gain advantage on melee weapon attack rolls, and your weapon attacks deal an additional 1d6 fire damage.
- Despair: You gain resistance to all damage, but your speed is halved, and you cannot willingly move closer to enemies.
- Fear: You can Dash as a bonus action, and creatures within 5 feet of you when you move take 1d6 psychic damage.
- Joy: You can make one additional attack when you take the Attack action, and allies within 10 feet of you gain temporary hit points equal to your Intelligence modifier.
The transformation ends when you finish your turn and roll a d20. On a roll of 18–20, the transformation ends early. When the transformation ends, you gain one level of exhaustion.
Level 3: Self-Activated Outburst
Your emotional volatility is tied directly to the battle around you, often manifesting as bursts of uncontrollable power. Twice per long rest, you can choose to actively trigger an Arcane Outburst, allowing you to consciously channel your emotional energy into the battle. This outburst grants you the benefits of one of your emotional states (Anger, Fear, Joy, or Despair), and it lasts for 1 minute, during which your emotions drive your combat prowess and spellcasting. Every time you take damage, you must make a constitution saving throw to maintain the outburst.
Level 6: Spell-Driven Prowess
Starting at 6th level when you are transformed by Arcane Outburst, you can expend spell slots to fuel combat abilities instead of casting spells. These abilities use your bonus action and last until the start of your next turn.
- Arcane Overdrive (1st-level slot): Your weapon attacks deal an additional 1d8 damage of a type matching your emotional state (fire for Anger, psychic for Fear, etc.).
- Defensive Burst (1st-level slot): Gain temporary hit points equal to 5 times the level of the expended spell slot.
- Elemental Lunge (2nd-level slot): Move up to 30 feet in a straight line. Each creature in your path must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence modifier) or take 3d8 damage matching your emotional state.
Level 10: Chaotic Body
Starting at 10th level your Arcane Outbursts become more intense, and the effects of your transformation are amplified. While transformed, you gain the following additional benefits based on your emotional state:
- Anger: Your attacks score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20.
- Despair: When you take damage, the attacker takes psychic damage equal to your Intelligence modifier.
- Fear: You become invisible to creatures more than 10 feet away from you while moving.
- Joy: Allies within 10 feet of you gain advantage on attack rolls and saving throws.
Additionally, when an Arcane Outburst ends, you may roll a d20. On a roll of 15 or higher, you do not gain exhaustion.
Level 14: Unleashed Soul
Starting at 14th level you can briefly embrace your transformation without triggering an Arcane Outburst. As a bonus action, you may enter your transformation for 1 minute, immediately selecting your emotional state. You can use this feature once per long rest.
While transformed, your emotional outburst can warp the battlefield:
- When you cast a spell that deals damage, you can change the damage type to match your emotional state.
- When you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you can force it to make a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence modifier). On a failure, the creature is frightened (if Fear), charmed (if Joy), or unable to regain hit points (if Despair) until the end of your next turn.
