Fighter
Base Class: Fighter

The Kensai is a disciplined and elite warrior, dedicated to mastering the art of the blade through relentless training and a profound understanding of martial techniques. Drawing inspiration from the historical duelists of ancient times, the Kensai embodies precision, agility, and the essence of the sword. These warriors hone their skills to perfection, focusing on swift, decisive strikes and an unparalleled defensive stance. Their signature ability, Duelist’s Precision, allows them to gain advantage and deliver powerful, precise attacks that increase in potency as they level up. This feature reflects their ability to read and anticipate their opponents' moves, turning the tide of battle with calculated strikes and superior reflexes.

Kensai fighters are renowned for their ability to delay their actions to maximize the impact of their attacks, mirroring the patience and discipline of historical duelists. As they progress, their Duelist’s Precision grows stronger, enabling them to deal significant damage and exploit their enemies' weaknesses with each strike. At higher levels, this ability not only increases in damage but also grants additional benefits such as lowered critical hit thresholds and multiple uses per battle, making the Kensai a master of the dueling arts. Combining historical context with a deep focus on dueling, the Kensai stands as a paragon of martial excellence, capable of defeating even the most formidable foes with grace and deadly accuracy.

Duelist's Precision

At third level, when a creature makes a melee attack against you, you can use your reaction to make one melee attack against that creature with your Kensai weapon.

If their attack missed you: Your attack roll has advantage and the attack deals 2d6 additional damage on a hit.
If their attack hit you: Your attack roll has advantage.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses after a long rest.

At level 7 the damage increases to 3d6, at level 10 it increases to 4d6, and at level 15 it increases to 5d6.

NOTE: Duelist’s Precision and Sneak Attack: The additional damage from Duelist’s Precision does not stack with Sneak Attack damage. If you can apply both features, you choose which one to use for a given attack.

Quick Draw Stance (Passive)

At third level, if your Kensai weapon is sheathed at the start of combat, the first attack made against you in the encounter has disadvantage. This feature represents your ability to anticipate and react swiftly to the first strike.

Weapon Mastery

Choose a sword type to become your Kensai weapon. Your attack rolls with that weapon can score a Critical Hit on a roll of 19 or 20 on the d20. Additionally, you gain a bonus to your initiative equal to your proficiency bonus.

Evasive Maneuvers

At level 7, when you are hit by a melee attack, you can use your reaction to reduce the damage by an amount equal to your Dexterity modifier plus your proficiency bonus.

Quick Reflexes

At level 7 you gain a bonus to your AC equal to your proficiency bonus while you are not wearing armor or wielding a shield.

Enhanced Duelists Precision

At level 7 you can use Duelist’s Precision twice per battle, and the additional damage increases to 3d6. Additionally, if the creature's melee attack misses, you lower the threshold for a critical hit by 1 (e.g., a critical hit occurs on a roll of 18-20 instead of 20).

Graceful Parry

At level 10 when a creature misses you with a melee attack, you can use your reaction to make a melee weapon attack with your Kensai weapon against that creature.

Master Duelist’s Precision

You can use Duelist’s Precision three times per battle, the additional damage increases to 4d6

Kensai's Strike

At level 10, once per turn, when you hit a creature with your Kensai weapon, you can deal extra damage equal to your proficiency bonus.

Flawless Execution

At level 15, when you make an attack roll with your Kensai weapon and miss, you can reroll the attack. You must use the new roll, and you can use this feature a number of times equal to your Dexterity modifier (minimum of once) per long rest.

Immovable Stance

At level 15 you cannot be knocked prone or moved against your will while you are conscious and wielding your Kensai weapon. You can still be grappled, but cannot be moved against your will while grappled.

Supreme Duelist’s Precision

At level 15, you can use Duelist’s Precision four times per battle, the additional damage increases to 5d6, and you regain one use of Duelist’s Precision when you score a critical hit.

Unbreakable Focus

At level 18, as an action, you can enter a state of perfect focus for 1 minute. While in this state, you gain the following benefits:

  • You have advantage on all attack rolls with your Kensai weapon.
  • Your movement speed increases by 20 feet.
  • You have resistance to all damage.
  • You can’t be charmed, frightened, or stunned. You can use this feature once per long rest.

Blade of the Kensai

At level 18 your Kensai weapon attacks score a critical hit on a roll of 17-20. Additionally, when you score a critical hit with your Kensai weapon, you can roll one of the weapon’s damage dice one additional time and add it to the extra damage of the critical hit.
