Base Class: Barbarian
What is Justice?
Justice is a concept that transcends mere legality. It is pursuing what is morally right, equitable, and fair. Yet, as you rightly pointed out, justice is not always fair or equal. It is an ideal that often clashes with the realities of human imperfection, systemic biases, and the unpredictable nature of life. Those who walk the Path of Justice must confront these contradictions head-on, often questioning their beliefs and actions.
The Challenge of Morality
The warriors of justice are not immune to doubt. They constantly wrestle with questions like:
- What does it mean to do the "right" thing when the consequences are unclear?
- How far should one go to uphold the law when the law itself may be flawed?
- Is it just to sacrifice one for the sake of many?
These moral dilemmas are the crucible in which their character is tested. The Path of Justice demands not only strength and courage but also wisdom and introspection. It requires an understanding that justice is not a fixed destination but a dynamic, evolving pursuit. The law is often seen as the embodiment of justice, but it is not infallible. Laws are created by humans and can be influenced by power, prejudice, and ignorance. Those who defend the law must navigate its imperfections, sometimes bending or challenging it to serve a higher moral purpose. This tension between the letter of the law and the spirit of justice is a central theme on this path.
Walking the Path of Justice is not for the faint of heart. It demands sacrifice—of comfort, of certainty, and sometimes even of life itself. These warriors are often called to stand against tyranny, corruption, and chaos, knowing that their actions may come at great personal cost. Yet, they persevere, driven by a belief in the possibility of a better, more just world. Ultimately, the Path of Justice is not about achieving perfection but about striving for it. It is a journey of continuous growth, learning, and adaptation. Those who walk this path understand that justice is not a static ideal but a living, breathing force that requires constant vigilance and effort. In the end, the question "What is Justice?" may never have a definitive answer. But for those who choose this path, the pursuit of that answer is what gives their lives meaning and purpose. They are the guardians of hope, the defenders of the vulnerable, and the champions of a world where fairness and equity are not just dreams but achievable realities.
Tyr's Paragon
Starting when you take this subclass at 3rd level you gain proficiency in heavy armor and can wear it without losing access to your rage features.
Reversed
Starting when you take this subclass at the 3rd level, your Rage feature becomes altered. While raging in this way, you no longer have resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage. When you use your bonus action to activate your Rage, you let out a loud and guttural roar. Upon doing so, you may mark a number of creatures in a 15ft radius sphere centered on yourself up to your proficiency bonus with a Justiciar’s brand. This brand represents your desire for Justice. Once per turn when a hostile creature hits you with an attack, you may choose after taking the damage to equally divide a pool of damage equal to the amount of damage you took to all creatures marked by your Justiciars brand. This damage type is the same as the triggering attack.
Creatures branded in this way will no longer be marked if your rage ends for any reason. Additionally, when a creature bears your mark you know its true alignment.
Upright
Starting when you reach the 6th level in this class, your understanding of the meaning of those words deepens. You understand that true justice is fair but not equal. While you are raging, when you are hit by an attack but before you see the damage rolled you may expend your reaction to make yourself vulnerable to all triggering damage from that hit.
Exalted
Starting at the 10th level, you have decided that not all justice is swift. If you were to die before it could be completed then who would finish your sentencing? Once per round while you are raging, when a creature bearing your Justiciar’s brand is healed by any means you restore your hit points by half of that amount.
Additionally, you gain access to a new feature of your Justiciar’s Brand. As a reaction when you take damage, you can mitigate some of the effect. Upon activation, you gain resistance to that source of damage until the end of the triggering creature’s turn. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus. You regain all uses of this ability after completing a short rest.
Beacon of Tyr
Starting when you reach the 14th level in this class, you embody the spirit of true justice. This manifests itself as a 15ft aura that radiates from you while raging. If you have taken no damage since the end of your last turn, hostile creatures in your aura suffer a -1 penalty to their ability checks. This penalty increases each consecutive round you take no damage up to a maximum of your Barbarian level/2.
Additionally, as a reaction, you can choose to remove your brand from a creature early. When you remove a brand in this way you can convert it into an immobile ethereal battle standard planted in a five-foot square adjacent to your current position. Only one flag can be created in this way at a time. This ghostly flag emanates an aura with a radius equal to your Barbarian level x 2. Friendly creatures within this aura find themselves bolstered. For each turn that you take no damage, they gain a +1 bonus to damage and 5 additional movement speeds. This bonus increases each consecutive round you take no damage up to a maximum of your Proficiency bonus.
