Base Class: Barbarian
Path of the Ruinborn
A 2024 Barbarian Subclass for 5e Homebrew
**To be Ruinborn is to be hunger itself. Not just for flesh, but for dominance, for the right to stand above all. Others may rage with fury—we consume.
The Path of the Ruinborn represents the monstrous evolution of an apex predator. Those who follow this path are not mere warriors—they are unstoppable forces of nature, taking strength from their fallen foes and growing stronger with every kill. This subclass is inspired by the Thenomaxx species and the monstrous reign of Vaenros, The Maw.
Barbarians who embrace this path become living weapons, constantly evolving and reshaping their flesh in battle. They fight not only with brute force but with feral cunning, using fear, adaptation, and consumption to dominate the battlefield.
Path of the Ruinborn Features
Level 3 - Maw of the Ruinborn
Your rage is more than fury—it is hunger incarnate.
- While raging, your unarmed strikes count as natural weapons and deal 1d8 slashing damage (instead of the usual 1d4). At 10th level, this damage increases to 1d10.
- If you reduce a creature to 0 hit points, you can use your bonus action to regain hit points equal to your Barbarian level + Constitution modifier as you consume their essence.
- You gain darkvision out to 60 feet, or if you already have darkvision, it increases by 30 feet.
Your fangs and claws are not just weapons—they are the tools of dominance.
Level 6 - Flesh of the Devourer
The hunger fuels your body, making you harder to kill and even harder to stop.
- When you enter rage, you immediately gain temporary hit points equal to twice your Constitution modifier (minimum of 2).
- When an enemy within 5 feet of you hits you with an attack, you can use your reaction to force them to make a Strength saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Constitution modifier).
- On a failure, they are grappled by you until the end of your next turn.
- On a success, they take necrotic damage equal to your proficiency bonus as your abyssal blood lashes out.
Your body adapts. The weak perish. You endure.
Level 10 - Maw Unchained
You are no longer bound by mortal flesh. The hunger within has reshaped you.
- While raging, you can use a bonus action to enter a frenzied feeding state for 1 minute. During this time, you gain the following benefits:
- Your movement speed increases by 15 feet.
- Your jump distance triples.
- You gain resistance to necrotic and psychic damage.
- You can make an unarmed strike as a bonus action (even if you already attacked with a weapon).
- Once per rage, when you reduce a creature to 0 HP, you can choose to absorb their strength. You gain +1 to attack and damage rolls until the end of your next turn (caps at +2).
Your flesh remembers every kill. Every victim feeds your power.
Level 14 - The Apex Maw
You are more than a warrior. You are an unstoppable force, the devouring end of all who stand before you.
- You become immune to charmed, frightened, and stunned conditions while raging.
- If you reduce a creature to 0 HP, you instantly regain 1 use of Rage.
- When you activate Maw Unchained, you also gain a monstrous adaptation, choosing one of the following features:
- Serpent Maw: Your bite attack deals 2d10 necrotic damage and heals you for half the damage dealt.
- Voidborn Hide: Your AC increases by +2, and creatures have disadvantage on opportunity attacks against you.
- Bonegnash Frenzy: You can make two unarmed strikes instead of one when you use a bonus action to attack.
Once you select an adaptation, it lasts for the entire rage.
Playing a Path of the Ruinborn Barbarian
As a Ruinborn Barbarian, you are not just an unrelenting berserker—you are a living predator, a nightmare that grows stronger the more you kill. You dominate the battlefield through brutal adaptability, relentless regeneration, and the terror you instill in your prey.
Roleplaying the Maw:
- Do you struggle against the hunger inside, or do you embrace it?
- Are you a force of nature, hunting with instinct, or a calculated terror that preys on weakness?
- What drives your unquenchable hunger—survival, revenge, or a deeper calling?
Final Thoughts
This Path of the Ruinborn Barbarian perfectly captures Vaenros, The Maw, and the monstrous nature of the Thenomaxx. It is a subclass built around evolution, consumption, and unstoppable adaptation.
