Barbarian
Base Class: Barbarian

Barbarians who walk the Path of Dread do not surrender to wild fury or lose themselves in chaos. Instead, they channel something far colder—an unrelenting, calculated terror. They are not firestorms; they are the creeping dark, the breathless silence before the scream.

Their rage is not a blaze but a presence—a suffocating force that wraps around the battlefield like a living nightmare. Enemies don’t fight you; they flee you. Even those immune to fear can feel the chill in their spine when you approach. You don’t strike with anger—you strike with inevitability.

As you grow in power, you become more than fearsome—you become inescapable. Your rage twists the air, steals resolve, and leaves only dread in its wake. At the height of your power, no wall, spell, or dimension can shield your prey from you. Their only escape is to be too far to feel you—or dead before they try.

“This subclass uses Constitution saving throws for fear effects to reflect the physical, primal nature of the Barbarian’s terrifying presence. It is not merely psychological fear, but a visceral, gut-level reaction to something monstrous.”

and a special thanks to Chatgpt for helping me organize the idea and really help me finetune it and for the image.

Dreadful Strike (Enhanced)

While raging, all melee weapon attacks made using Strength can trigger Dreadful Strike. On a hit, a creature must make a Constitution saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Constitution modifier).

  • On a failure, the creature is frightened for a number of rounds equal to your Constitution modifier.
  • The creature may repeat the saving throw at the end of each of your turns.
  • A successful save no longer grants immunity to further uses of this effect.

Burst of Terror

When you reduce a non-allied creature to 0 hit points or score a critical hit while raging, you may unleash a psychic shockwave.

  • Each creature of your choice within 15 feet must succeed on a Constitution saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Constitution modifier) or become frightened of you for 1 minute.
  • Affected creatures can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of your turns, ending the effect on a success.

Apex of Dread

At the height of your power, you become the avatar of horror itself:

  • Your Well of Dread aura range and Burst of Terror increases to 30 feet.
  • Well of Dread healing is no longer limited to once per turn all the damage dealt is converted to healing.
  • While at least one frightened creature is within 30 feet, you gain immunity to psychic damage and immunity to enchantment effects (e.g., charm person, calm emotions, dominate person).
  • Marked creatures cannot teleport, plane shift, or use other magical effects to escape your presence (e.g., blink, misty step, shadow step). They may still physically move.
  • When you hit a frightened creature with a melee weapon attack, a fear-made reflection of your weapon strikes the creature’s mind. That target takes additional psychic damage equal to your weapon’s base damage dice (e.g., a greatsword deals +2d6 psychic damage) this is added to every attack made against a frightened creature.

Dreadful Rage

While raging:

  • A creature frightened by you can only end the frightened condition by:
    • Succeeding on a Constitution saving throw at the end of your turn(it's always the turn after you have applied fear) (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Constitution modifier), or
    • Moving more than 120 feet away from you.
  • Breaking line of sight does not end the frightened condition.
  • Creatures immune to fear have advantage on the saving throw instead.
  • A frightened creature must use its movement to flee from you however, this forced movement does not provoke opportunity attacks. If it cannot, it must take the Dodge action.

Dreadful Strike

While raging, when you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack using Strength, you may force it to make a Constitution saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Constitution modifier).

  • On a failure, the creature becomes frightened of you for a number of rounds equal to your Constitution modifier.
  • The creature may repeat the saving throw at the end of each of your turns, ending the effect on a success.
  • This feature can trigger once per round.
  • A creature becomes immune once it has successfully made a save for 24 hours.

Dread Reaper

When you strike a creature that is frightened of you:

  • It must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or be compelled to flee from you using its movement on its next turn. It may still act normally.
  • You deal additional psychic damage equal to your Rage bonus damage.
  • You regain hit points equal to your Rage bonus damage.
  • If your attack inflicted the frightened condition (e.g., via Dreadful Strike), Dread Reaper also applies.

Your movement speed increases by 20 feet when moving toward a frightened creature

Well of Dread

When you strike a creature that is frightened of you:

  • It must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or be compelled to flee from you using its movement on its next turn. It may still act normally.
  • You deal additional psychic damage equal to your Rage bonus damage.
  • You regain hit points equal to your Rage bonus damage.
  • If your attack inflicted the frightened condition (e.g., via Dreadful Strike), Dread Reaper also applies.

Your movement speed increases by 20 feet when moving toward a frightened creature.

Suffocating Dread

Your fear doesn’t just frighten—it entangles. Those you terrify cannot escape the gravity of your presence.

  • When a creature becomes frightened of you, it is marked until it is no longer frightened or moves more than 120 feet away from you.
  • You always know the exact location of your marked creatures, even if they are invisible or hidden by non-magical means.
  • When a marked creature moves away from you regardless of distance, you can use your reaction to make a trip attempt, forcing it to make a Strength saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Constitution modifier). On a failure, the creature falls prone.
  • If the creature is both frightened and below half its hit point maximum, it makes this save with disadvantage.
