Monastic Tradition of the Wastemire Shellborn
Subclass for Monk only

“We do not strike first. We endure. Then, when the world’s weight presses down… we cut clean.”
— Master Kamejin, Shellblade of the Iron Horizon

Monastic Tradition – Exclusive to the Wastemire Shellborn Tortle Subrace

The Shellblade Ronin walks the path of iron, steam, and silence.

Born from the ashes of a shattered world, these warrior-monks hail from the long-isolated island of the Wastemire Shellborn, tortles mutated by radiation and betrayal during the AI uprising. Sequestered behind volcanic cliffs and brine-choked coasts, the Shellborn developed a unique culture that fused ancient Feudal Japanese martial codes with the raw survivalism of the Wastes. Distrustful of outsiders and sworn enemies of the Children of Khepri, the Shellblade Ronin represent the pinnacle of their martial discipline—tanks of the battlefield, guided by spiritual calm and unyielding defense.

A Shellblade Ronin is more than a swordmaster. They are bastions of resolve, capable of channeling ki not just into strikes and movement, but into their impenetrable armored shell, allowing them to intercept deadly blows and withstand what would break lesser monks. Where other monastic traditions prioritize evasion, the Shellblade Ronin stands firm, embodying the eye of the sandstorm.

Their iconic weapon is the Tetsugen — a masterwork hybrid of katana and revolver, forged with sacred rites passed down for generations. The Tetsugen is a symbol of balance between stillness and action: elegant in form, explosive in potential. Only a Shellblade trained in its creation can unlock its latent power, folding Ki into every blade-draw and gunfire flash.

Guided by a codified blend of Brinemother worship and ancestral honor, Shellblade Ronin pursue justice and balance in a world that has lost both. Some leave their island sanctuaries after visions of great imbalance. Others seek vengeance for those slain by Khepri’s devout, or wander as protectors of the weak across the unforgiving Wastes.

They are warriors of myth. Pilgrims of grit and grace. And when their shell faces the storm, the storm breaks first.

Level 3: 🥋 Level 3 – Path of the Shellblade

🗡️ Tetsugen Mastery

You gain proficiency with the Tetsugen, a hybrid weapon built like a curved katana with a revolver built into the hilt. It counts as a monk weapon.

Tetsugen (Monk Weapon)

  • 1d8 slashing damage (versatile 1d10)

  • Special: When you take the Attack action, once per turn you may fire the revolver burst as part of the same attack, dealing 1d6 additional damage (choose: thunder, radiant, or fire).

You may use Dexterity or Wisdom for attack/damage rolls with the Tetsugen.

🛡️ Shellguard Technique

Your shell is a sacred relic of your mutated line.

  • While not wearing armor and not using a shield, you gain +1 AC.

  • If you are hit with a melee attack while using Patient Defense, you may use your reaction to gain resistance to that attack’s damage.

🌀 Shell Techniques (Stance System)

You learn to enter special combat stances based on ancient tortle kata. Choose two at 3rd level. You may switch stances as a bonus action once per turn. You gain an additional stance at levels 6 and 11.

Stance of the Spiraled Sun

“Motion is your blade.”

  • When you Dash, you may make one melee attack at the end of your movement.

  • If the enemy is unaware of you (hidden/invisible/in darkness), you deal extra damage = monk level.

Stance of the Stone Current

“Become the mountain.”

  • If you don’t move on your turn, gain +2 AC until the start of your next turn.

  • If a creature misses you with a melee attack, you may make one unarmed or Tetsugen attack as a reaction (once per round).

Stance of the Iron Bloom

“Even rust can bloom again.”

  • You gain resistance to psychic and poison damage.

  • You may cast Sanctuary once per long rest, targeting yourself or an ally.

Stance of the Shellsplitter

“Break their flow.”

  • When you hit a creature with your Tetsugen, you may prevent it from using reactions until the start of its next turn.

  • If the target was concentrating on a spell, it rolls with disadvantage on the saving throw.

🐚 Level 6 – Shellburst Reprisal

When a creature hits you with a melee attack, and you are in Patient Defense, you can spend 2 ki points to unleash a Shellburst:

  • All creatures in a 10 ft radius must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC = 8 + prof + WIS)

  • On failure: take 4d6 thunder damage and be pushed 10 ft. On success: half damage, no push.

You can use Shellburst once per short rest for free, additional uses cost ki.

Level 11: 👁️ Level 11 – Ronin’s Awareness

  • You gain blindsight 10 ft and cannot be surprised unless incapacitated.

  • Once per long rest, you may automatically succeed on a Dexterity saving throw.

Also, Shell Techniques may now be changed as a free action once per turn.

Level 17: 🧘 Level 17 – Final Kata: Horizon Divider

As an action, you may spend 4 ki points to enter the Horizon Divider state for 1 minute:

  • Your Tetsugen attacks deal +1d8 radiant damage

  • Your AC increases by +2

  • Enemies within 10 ft that end their turn there take 2d6 thunder damage

Once during this state, you may use Shellburst Reprisal as a bonus action, and it does not cost ki.
