Base Class: Sorcerer
Blue Mages are masters of adaptive magic, drawing power from the very creatures they face. Through strange physiology, forbidden study, and a willingness to take risks no sane mage would, a Blue Mage can absorb the essence of a monster and turn its strength into their own.
Whether stealing the casting of an enemy spell mid-battle or consuming a fallen beast to gain its natural abilities, Blue Mages embody the dangerous philosophy that to defeat a monster, one must become like it. Their magic is ever-changing—shaped by the prey they’ve faced and the powers they’ve dared to take.
However, this path is not without peril. Every stolen gift fades in time, and each new essence taken chips away at the mage’s humanity. The mightiest Blue Mages are as feared for their inhuman powers as for the beasts they’ve slain.
Azure Lore
Absorbing Spells.
When a creature targets you with a spell, you can use your reaction to attempt to learn it.
Make a Constitution saving throw with a DC equal to half the damage taken. If the spell deals no damage, the DC is 8 + the creature’s proficiency bonus.
On a success, you can add that spell to your list of Azure Lore spells.
You may only learn spells whose level you could normally cast and whose caster’s CR is less than or equal to your sorcerer level.
You cannot learn cantrips in this way.
Spell Storage.
You can know a number of Azure Lore spells equal to half your sorcerer level (rounded down) + your proficiency bonus.
If learning a new spell would exceed this number, choose one to forget.
You may use this feature once per short or long rest.
Azure Affinity
You gain proficiency with light armor, longswords, and scimitars.
You add your proficiency bonus on ability checks to identify monsters and their vulnerabilities.
If you are not proficient in the relevant skill, you are treated as proficient for this purpose.
Casting Lore
You can cast any spell learned through Azure Lore by expending a sorcerer spell slot of the appropriate level. These spells count as sorcerer spells for you.
You do not require material components for spells learned through Azure Lore unless the component has a gold cost.
Metamagic can not be applied to Azure Lore spells.
Arcane Consumption
Your study of monsters has given you the power to take their essence into yourself, gaining their strengths for a short time.
Consuming a Monster.
When you reduce a qualifying creature to 0 hit points, you may spend 1 sorcery point and 10 minutes consuming a specific vital organ of its body (heart, brain, etc.).
The creature must have a challenge rating less than or equal to your sorcerer level.
Make a Constitution saving throw with a DC equal to 8 + the creature’s proficiency bonus + its Constitution modifier.
On a success, you gain one of that creature’s possible Monster Powers.
On a failure, you vomit the remains, the corpse is ruined, and you gain no benefit.
Monster Powers.
Each creature has a list of four possible Monster Powers you could gain.
After successfully consuming the creature, roll a d20 and consult the DM to determine which one you gain.
The DM decides which powers are available for a given creature.
Power Limit.
You can maintain a number of Monster Powers at one time based on your sorcerer level:
| Sorcerer Level | Max Active Powers |
|---|---|
| 5th | 1 |
| 10th | 2 |
| 15th | 3 |
| 20th | 4 |
If you gain a new Monster Power while at your maximum, you must choose one to replace.
Duration.
Each Monster Power lasts 48 hours or until you replace it, whichever comes first.
Restrictions.
-
You cannot gain damage immunities.
-
You cannot gain Legendary Resistances.
-
Regeneration gained before 18th level cannot exceed 5 hp/round.
-
You cannot gain flight from creatures with CR lower than 10.
Reactive Learning
You can quickly analyze and counter the magic of others.
You may cast Counterspell once without expending a spell slot.
You can increase the spell’s level by spending 4 sorcery points per level above 3rd.
You regain the use of this feature after a long rest.
Unbridled Potential
Your mastery of monster lore is unmatched.
-
Passive Monster Powers from Arcane Consumption no longer expire and no longer require sorcery point costs (if any).
-
You may consume and learn from any creature regardless of CR.
-
You may gain one Damage Immunity from a creature you consume, chosen randomly from that creature’s available immunities. You can only have two learned Damage Immunities at a time.
