Wizard
Base Class: Wizard

Wizards of the School of Material Magic dedicate themselves to studying the hidden essence that fuels the arcane. Where most spellcasters treat material components and magic items as expendable tools, these wizards see them as vessels of the Weave itself. By unraveling and reclaiming this essence, they learn to channel power directly from the world around them.

A novice of this school begins clumsily, tearing apart trinkets and burning through herbs and powders to replace their spell slots. As their mastery grows, they discover ways to preserve precious reagents and siphon power without destroying the source. At the height of their art, a Material Mage can temporarily strip magic from legendary artifacts or draw vast power from rare components without ever consuming them, bending the Weave itself to their will.

This path appeals to wizards who crave versatility, resourcefulness, and the thrill of finding magic in every object and corner of the world. To such a wizard, a gemstone, a vial of dragon’s blood, or even a forgotten sword may hold the key to world-shaking power.

Level 3: Weaver of Substance

At the start of your training, you learn to see spell components and magical trinkets not as tools, but as raw vessels of power. This understanding forms the foundation of the School of Material Magic.

As part of this feature, you gain the following benefits: Arcane Knowledge, Detect Magic, and Essence Casting.

Arcane Knowledge

You gain proficiency in the Arcana and Nature skills. If you already have proficiency in either skill, work with your DM to choose another skill from the wizard skill list to replace the duplicate.

Detect Magic

You can cast detect magic a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus without expending a spell slot or material components. You regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

Essence Casting

When you cast a spell, you may use one fuel source instead of a spell slot:

  • Common or Uncommon Components: Use natural reagents (herbs, crystals, powders, bones, blood, etc.) worth at least 10 × the spell’s level in gp. These components are always consumed.
  • Magical Trinkets: You may destroy a minor magical item (uncommon rarity or lower) to fuel a spell of 1st or 2nd level. The item is permanently destroyed.

Reference — Item Rarity to Spell Level:

  • Uncommon item → fuels up to 2nd level
  • Rare item → fuels up to 4th level
  • Very rare item → fuels up to 6th level
  • Legendary item → fuels up to 9th level

Level 6: Arcane Siphon

With practice, you begin to manipulate magical essence more carefully. You learn to sometimes preserve components, siphon stronger items, and even draw energy directly from the Weave itself.

As part of this feature, you gain the following abilities: Component Efficiency, Item Siphoning, and Ambient Essence.

Component Efficiency

When you cast a spell using an uncommon material component through your Essence Casting feature, roll a d20. On a 15 or higher, the component is not consumed.

Item Siphoning

You may now siphon rare magic items to fuel spells up to 4th level using your Essence Casting feature. At this stage of your training, siphoning a rare item destroys it permanently.

Ambient Essence

Once per long rest, you may cast a spell of 3rd level or lower without expending a spell slot, material components, or an item. This represents briefly reclaiming arcane essence from the ambient Weave.

 Limited Use:

  • Number of Uses: 1
  • Reset Type: Long Rest

Level 10: Master of Essence

At this stage of your training, your command of material magic allows you to preserve rare components and suppress enchantments instead of destroying them. Your growing precision lets you manipulate magic without waste.

As part of this feature, you gain the following abilities: Component Preservation, Item Dormancy, and Arcane Appraisal.

Component Preservation

You can now fuel spells with rare material components through your Essence Casting feature. When doing so, roll a d20: on a 13 or higher, the component is not consumed.

Item Dormancy

When siphoning a rare or very rare magic item through your Essence Casting feature, the item is no longer destroyed. Instead, it becomes mundane until the end of your next long rest, after which its enchantment restores itself.

Arcane Appraisal

You gain advantage on Intelligence (Arcana) checks to identify magical properties of items and materials.

Level 14: Philosopher’s Ascendance

You have achieved true mastery over the essence of magic. Components bend to your will, enchantments yield without breaking, and you can now reshape spells themselves with the raw power of siphoned essence.

As part of this feature, you gain the following abilities: Component Perfection, Item Suppression, and Essence Transfiguration.

Component Perfection

You can now use very rare components as fuel through your Essence Casting feature. When doing so, they are consumed only on a roll of 5 or lower.

Item Suppression

When siphoning a very rare or legendary magic item through your Essence Casting feature, the item is not destroyed or rendered dormant. Instead, its enchantment is suppressed for 1 minute, then it regains its full magical power.

Essence Transfiguration

Once per long rest, when you cast a spell of 5th level or higher using Essence Casting (a component or item instead of a slot), you may shape the released essence to enhance the spell. Choose one of the following effects when you cast it.

Limited Use:

  • Number of Uses: 1
  • Reset Type: Long Rest

Amplify

Double the spell’s range or area of effect (choose one) for the casting.

Empower

Maximize one damage or healing die per spell level. (Example: a 7th-level spell maximizes 7 dice.)

Sustain

The spell does not require concentration for the first 1 minute of its duration. If the spell is still active afterward, you must begin concentrating then or it ends.
