Base Class: Rogue
Manifestations are born from the environment itself, shaping those who inherit them into living reflections of their birthplace. Fire manifests from deserts and volcanoes, wind from the peaks and open plains, and lightning from storms that brew over ruined skylines and industrial wastelands. Those touched by Urban Lightning awaken to a manifestation that is more than energy — it is toxic, heavy, and forceful, carrying the corruption of smoke, metal, and poison. Darkborn harness this volatile power with cunning precision, blending their rogue’s guile with the violent storms inside them. Their bolts don’t just burn; they corrode and cripple, leaving enemies choking on static-laced toxins.
A rare few rise beyond their limits, evolving their manifestation until they can conjure lightning freely, unconstrained by the storm. For these Darkborn, the city itself becomes their weapon — every shadow a hiding place, every flicker of neon a herald of destruction. At their peak, they reach apocalyptic might, capable of scarring the earth with each strike, their violet storms rewriting the battlefield into a poisoned ruin.
In the slums of a city that never sleeps, a whisper spread of a killer who walked like a storm. The air around him hummed with static, streetlamps flickering as he passed. His blade never gleamed — it crackled, purple and heavy, carving through armor as though it were paper. Those who survived claimed the lightning burned twice: once in the flesh, and again in the lungs, as the poison lingered long after the fight. To face him was not to fight a man, but to step into a storm that wanted you dead.
A Darkborn’s manifestation is not limited to the features listed here. The user may attempt to manipulate their element however they so choose, as long as the DM agrees it fits within the scope of their manifestation. The features above represent guaranteed powers, but creativity is encouraged.
Level 3: Toxic spark
Your body surges with urban lightning, crackling with violet energy that poisons and tears at foes.
-
Urban Lightning Strike. You can infuse your Sneak Attack with lightning. Once per turn, when you deal Sneak Attack damage, you can change the damage type to lightning + poison. The target must also succeed on a Constitution saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Dexterity modifier) or be poisoned until the start of your next turn.
-
Toxic Bolt. You can conjure a violet lightning bolt as a bonus action. This bolt can be hurled (range 30/60) and deals 1d6 lightning + 1d6 poison damage. It counts as a finesse/ranged weapon for Sneak Attack.
-
Manifest Rank – Rare. You can create small amounts of lightning without needing a storm or charged environment. This lightning carries smoke and a heavy ozone scent, marking your presence.
Discharge
Darkborn channel an unstable manifestation that is always in a state of charge unless discharged. This volatility is both a weapon and a curse.
- Constant Charge. Your body is always storing lightning. You must discharge your manifestation through combat or ability use at least once every 3 days. If you fail to do so, you gain the Surged condition.
- Surged Condition. While Surged, your lightning grows unstable and lashes inward. You take double lightning damage from all sources until the condition ends.
- Discharge. You may release all stored power as an action to end the Surged condition. When you do, every creature of your choice within 20 feet must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, they take (1d10 lightning + 1d10 poison) for each day your powers were not discharged. On a success, they take half as much damage. After using this ability, your charge resets, and the Surged condition is removed.
- Scaling Danger. The longer you go without discharging, the stronger the blast becomes — but also the greater the risk of being struck down while in the Surged state.
Level 9: Overcharged Veins
The urban storm inside you grows uncontrollable, surging through your strikes.
-
Conductive Strikes. Whenever you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack, you can force lightning through the wound. The creature takes an additional 1d8 lightning damage, and if they fail a Constitution saving throw, they are staggered, reducing their movement speed by 10 feet until the end of their next turn.
-
Toxic Feedback. When a creature within 10 feet of you damages you with a melee attack, they take lightning + poison damage equal to your proficiency bonus.
-
Manifest Rank – Very Rare. You no longer require environmental charge to sustain your manifestation. You can create toxic lightning freely, and your control allows you to bend its shape — forming crude weapons, whips, or shields of lightning.
Level 13: Storm of shadows
Your manifestation grows overwhelming, and your body begins to merge shadow and storm.
-
Lightning Mirage. When you use your Cunning Action to Dash, Disengage, or Hide, you can briefly dissolve into crackling violet static. Until the start of your next turn, attacks against you have disadvantage.
-
Toxic Overload. When you deal Sneak Attack damage, you may choose to overcharge your manifestation. The target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or take poison damage equal to your Sneak Attack dice at the start of its next turn.
Level 17: Cataclysm spark
Your manifestation has reached apocalyptic level — a force that scars the battlefield.
-
Apocalyptic Manifestation. You can release your lightning in a violent storm once per long rest. Choose one of the following effects when you activate this ability (as an action):
-
Toxic Storm. A 30-foot radius around you erupts in violet lightning. Each creature of your choice must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failure, they take 8d10 lightning + 8d10 poison damage and are poisoned for 1 minute. On a success, they take half damage and are not poisoned.
-
Forceful Surge. You unleash a concentrated bolt of urban lightning at one creature within 120 feet. The target takes 12d10 lightning + 12d10 poison damage and is pushed back 30 feet, knocked prone, and paralyzed until the end of your next turn on a failed Constitution saving throw.
-
-
Living Cataclysm. Your body is now permanently wreathed in faint arcs of toxic violet lightning. You are immune to poison damage and the poisoned condition. When you take lightning damage, you instead heal for half the amount.
