Base Class: Wizard
Illusionists who follow the School of Chromatic Illusion specialize in manipulating light, color, and sensory perception. Their spells dazzle, distract, and distort reality with bursts of brilliance and subtle shifts in hue.
This vibrant tradition was developed by Toba Silvervine, a half-elf who once performed as a circus illusionist and acrobatic rogue. Trained in both sleight of hand and arcane deception, Toba believed that magic should be more than effective—it should be entertaining. Blending the flair of performance with the precision of illusion, Toba crafted spells that turn combat into spectacle and misdirection into art. To Chromatic Illusionists, every battlefield is a stage, and every spell is a showstopper.
If you're going to play with fire, make it fun and exciting. Toba Silvervine
Level 2: Chromatic Initiation
When you choose this tradition at 2nd level, you gain features that reflect your training in layered sensory deception:
Illusion Savant
Beginning when you select this school at 2nd level, the gold and time you must spend to copy an illusion spell into your spellbook is halved.
Improved Minor Illusion
You gain the Minor Illusion cantrip if you don’t already know it. If you already know this cantrip, you learn a different wizard cantrip of your choice. The cantrip doesn't count against your number of cantrips known.
When you cast Minor Illusion, you can create both a sound and an image with a single casting of the spell.
Chromatic Flash
You gain the Chromatic Flash cantrip if you don’t already know it. If you already know this cantrip, you learn a different wizard cantrip of your choice. The cantrip doesn't count against your number of cantrips known.
Flash Manipulation
When you cast Chromatic Flash, you can choose one of the following enhancements:
Quick Cast: You may cast Chromatic Flash as a bonus action instead of an action.
Dual Distraction: If you cast Chromatic Flash and then make a melee attack on the same turn, the target has disadvantage on any reaction it takes until the start of its next turn.
Illusory Echo
If the target succeeds on its saving throw, it still suffers disadvantage on Perception checks until the end of its next turn.
You may use Flash Manipulation a number of times equal to your Intelligence modifier (minimum once), regaining all uses on a long rest.
Chromatic Insight
Your attunement to refracted magic sharpens your perception of falsehood. Starting at 2nd level, you gain advantage on Intelligence (Investigation) checks made to discern illusions and on saving throws made to disbelieve active illusion effects, such as Phantasmal Force, Major Image, or Mirage Arcane.
This feature does not grant advantage against illusion spells that deal damage or impose conditions unless they involve a belief or perception component.
Level 2: Chromatic Flair (Roleplaying Feature)
Your mastery of color and light allows you to subtly alter the visual effects of your magic—even spells outside the school of Illusion.
You may change the color, shimmer, or visual style of any spell you cast, provided the alteration is purely cosmetic and does not affect the spell’s mechanics. For example:
Casting Lightning Bolt as a crackling arc of violet energy
Making Continual Flame flicker through a rainbow spectrum
Causing Mage Armor to shimmer like stained glass
Turning Fireball into a burst of emerald flame
These changes are considered harmless illusions layered over your magic and are encouraged as part of your performance. DMs may reward creative use of Chromatic Flair with inspiration or advantage on Charisma-based checks when style matters.
Suggested Visual Effects Table
Spell Name / Suggested Color Effect
Fireball: Emerald green explosion with golden sparks
Mage Armor: Shimmering violet lattice like stained glass
Lightning Bolt: Crackling arc of deep indigo with silver veins
Magic Missile: Multicolored darts trailing rainbow ribbons
Shield: Flash of translucent sapphire light
Mirror Image: Illusory duplicates tinted in pastel hues
Continual Flame: Flame cycles through a slow rainbow gradient
Invisibility: Faint prismatic shimmer before fading
Wall of Force: Transparent wall with refracted light like a soap bubble
Counterspell: Sudden burst of crimson static that shatters the spell
Prestidigitation: Sparkles, color shifts, or glowing glyphs as desired
Level 6: Prismatic Veil
You learn to weave shimmering illusions around yourself and allies. As a reaction when you or a creature within 30 feet is targeted by an attack, you can impose disadvantage on the attack roll by cloaking the target in a veil of shifting colors.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Intelligence modifier (minimum once), regaining all uses on a long rest.
Level 10: Sensory Overload
When you cast an illusion spell of 1st level or higher, you can choose one creature that sees the illusion. That creature must make a Constitution saving throw or be stunned until the end of its next turn, overwhelmed by the sensory barrage.
You can use this feature once per short or long rest.
Chromatic Clarity
Beginning at 10th level, your mind becomes a prism of clarity against deceptive magic. You gain advantage on all saving throws against Illusion spells, regardless of their effect.
When you succeed on a saving throw against an Illusion spell, you may choose one of the following effects:
Reflective Glare: The caster must make a Wisdom saving throw (DC = your spell save DC) or suffer disadvantage on their next spell attack roll or saving throw.
Prismatic Echo: You may immediately cast Illusory Blade or Minor Illusion as a reaction, without expending a spell slot.
Level 14: Hard Light Mastery
You have mastered the art of weaving illusions so vivid they take on physical form. When you cast an illusion spell that creates an image, you can choose one inanimate, nonmagical object within the illusion to become tangible; a construct of hardened light and arcane force.
This object behaves as if real for up to 1 minute, or until the illusion ends. It can be used to:
Provide cover or block movement
Act as a platform or bridge
Serve as a weapon or tool (dealing force damage and vanishing after one use)
Interact with the environment in simple, physical ways
The object must fit within the illusion and cannot exceed 10 feet in any dimension. You can use this feature once per turn, but only once per spell cast.
Visual Flavor: The object glows faintly with chromatic shimmer—like stained glass infused with radiant energy. It hums softly when touched and dissolves into motes of light when dismissed.
