Base Class: Barbarian
Path of the Dragon Barbarians believe they are reincarnated dragons or dragons trapped in mortal bodies. Their rage comes from their inner dragon expressing a desire for dominance. Using their rage to channel draconic powers, these Barbarians take on dragon-like traits and are able to glimpse memories of their time as a dragon to harness the magic and fury of dragons.
Level 3: Draconic Magic
Your innate draconic power gives you the ability to use magic common amongst dragons. When you reach a Barbarian level specified in the Dragon Magic Spells table, you always have the listed spells prepared.

You cast your Dragon Magic spells even while your rage is active, and your rage does not prevent you from concentrating on these spells. You do not require a Material component to cast any of your Dragon Magic spells. When you cast a Dragon Magic spell it is always cast at the lowest level possible.
You have 3 Draconic Essence charges that can be used to cast your Dragon Magic spells. When you cast a spell higher than level 3 you must expend an additional charge to do so. You gain an additional Draconic Essence charge when you reach levels 6, 10, and 14 in this class, for a maximum of 6 charges. You regain all of your expended Draconic Essence charges when you finish a Long Rest. You can expend a use of your rage to regain 2 expended Draconic Essence charges (no action required), but cannot do so again until you finish a Long Rest.
Constitution is your Spellcasting Ability for your Dragon Magic spells, since the power of your magic comes from your physical might. You use your Constitution whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability and to set the Spell save DC and Spell attack modifier.
- Spell save DC = 8 + your Proficiency Bonus + your Constitution modifier
- Spell attack modifier = your Proficiency Bonus + your Constitution modifier
Level 3: Draconic Physique
Though you have the body of a mortal, aspects of your draconic form remain. You gain the following benefits.
Draconic Tongue. You can speak, read, and write Draconic.
Dragon Scales. When you are not wearing armor you gain a +2 bonus to your Armor Class. While your rage is active you gain Resistance to Fire and Cold damage.
Dragon Claws. While your rage is active your Unarmed Strike deals 1d8 Slashing damage. This damage increases to 2d8 when you reach level 10 in this class.
Unbound Movement. You cannot fall Prone due to falling and you take half damage from falling. Once on your turn while your rage is active, you can jump up to 20 feet by spending 10 feet of movement.
Level 6: Dragon Rage
You remember the feeling of unleashing destruction from within. As an action you can expend a Draconic Essence charge to exhale a 20-foot Cone. Each creature in that area makes a Dexterity saving throw against your Dragon Magic spell save DC, taking 6d6 Fire or Cold damage (your choice) on a failed save or half as much damage on a success. This damage increases to 8d6 when you reach level 10 in this class.
Damaging an enemy with this action while your rage is active allows you to immediately use your Bonus Action to perform an Unarmed Strike or an attack with a weapon that lacks the Heavy property. When you reach level 14 in this class you can make two attacks as part of this Bonus Action instead of one.
Level 10: Devour Magic
You remember the desire to consume magical energy to strengthen yourself. As a Bonus Action you can cast the Dispel Magic spell, but you must be close enough to touch the target of the spell. You can cast the spell even while your rage is active. You use Constitution for the spell's ability check and you can add your Proficiency Bonus. If you succeed in ending the magical effect you regain a number of expended Draconic Essence charges equal to half of the spell’s level (rounded down) and gain 3d12 Temporary Hit Points.
Once you have successfully used this feature to end a magical effect, you must finish a Short or Long Rest to regain your use of it.
Level 14: Draconic Bond
The draconic power within you has reached its apex and you can now call on the bond you shared with other dragons. You can cast the Summon Dragon spell without a Material component and without requiring Concentration. You can cast this spell even if your rage is active. Constitution is your spellcasting ability for this spell. Once you cast the spell in this way, you cannot do so again until you finish a Long Rest.

Posted Dec 24, 2025Hey there.
I created Version 1 of this Subclass well over a year ago when I was still new to making Homebrew and just wanted to make a Dragon-themed Barbarian. It was sloppy and a bit overpowered, but it was fun and filled with flavor, and at least 199 people seemed to like it enough to click the add button. But as I got more experienced with making Homebrew I kept looking back on this Subclass wanting to make it better, like streamlining and balancing the features and making it actually work with D&D Beyond Character Sheets.
So that's what I did!
Here's Version 2 of the Path of the Dragon Subclass. I hope you like it just as much as Version 1 if not more. The flavor and gameplay is still mostly the same with a lot of the biggest issues (imo) removed, and a greatly improved spell list. You also no longer have 2 features at nearly every Barbarian Subclass level and get some features much earlier than before so progression should feel much smoother.
If you played Version 1 let me know what you think please. I was very hesitant to make changes because of how many people liked it, but I'm happy with how it turned out.
