Barbarian
Base Class: Barbarian

Rune of Destruction

Your runes blaze with violent power.

  • Once on each of your turns while raging, when you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack, you deal extra damage equal to your proficiency bonus.

  • The damage is the same type as the weapon’s damage.

Simple, scaling, and very barbarian.

Runic Rage

When you enter your Rage, glowing crimson runes flare across your body. Choose one Runic Aspect from the list below. The chosen aspect lasts for the duration of your Rage. You may choose a different aspect each time you Rage.

🔴 Level 3 – Runic Rage

This is the core feature.

Example Design:

  • When you enter Rage, glowing red runes appear.

  • Choose one Runic Aspect each time you rage.

Possible Aspects (choose 1 per rage):

  • Rune of Destruction – extra damage (very classic barbarian)

  • Rune of Warding – defensive boost

  • Rune of Fury – mobility or advantage effect

👉 This mirrors Totem Warrior’s flexibility and is considered balanced.

🔴 Level 6 – Runic Surge

This is where the “special barbarian magic” can show up.

Ideas:

  • Spend a Rage bonus action to:

    • explode runic energy in a small radius

    • empower a weapon attack with elemental/force/necrotic damage

  • OR passive effects while raging (simpler for D&D Beyond)

Example:

  • Once per rage, when you hit, deal extra damage and impose a condition (push, frighten, etc.)

🔴 Level 10 – Etched Flesh

Mid-tier survivability or utility.

Ideas:

  • Resistance to an additional damage type while raging

  • Advantage on saving throws vs spells

  • Runes remain faintly active even when not raging (ribbon + small benefit)

This keeps power scaling correctly.

🔴 Level 14 – Avatar of the Crimson Script

Big, flashy capstone.

Ideas:

  • Runes fully ignite

  • Enemies take damage just for being near you

  • You can’t be stunned/frightened while raging

  • Once per long rest, rage becomes stronger than normal

This should feel mythic, but not invincible.

Runic Surge

Runic Surge

6th-level Path of the Runebound feature

The crimson runes etched into your flesh can erupt with raw power.

Once per Rage, when you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack while raging, you can trigger a Runic Surge to unleash one of the following effects. The chosen effect occurs immediately after the attack hits.

Choose one of the effects below when you activate this feature:

🔴 Explosive Script

Runes flare violently outward.

  • The target takes extra damage equal to twice your Rage Damage bonus.

  • Each other creature of your choice within 5 feet of the target takes damage equal to your Rage Damage bonus.

  • The damage type is the same as the triggering attack.

🔴 Binding Runes

Glowing symbols lash around your foe.

  • The target must succeed on a Strength saving throw
DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Strength modifier

  • On a failure, the creature’s speed is reduced to 0 until the start of your next turn.

🔴 Searing Brand

The runes burn into your enemy’s flesh.

  • Until the start of your next turn, the target:

    • Cannot take reactions

    • Has disadvantage on the next attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn

Etched in Crimson

Level 10 Feature: Etched in Crimson

Design Goal

Official Barbarian Level 10 features usually grant:

  • defensive magic resistance (Ancestral Guardian)

  • utility / mobility (Totem)

  • sustained combat value

This feature will:

  • strengthen Runic Rage

  • add magical resilience

  • give light out-of-combat flavor

Etched in Crimson

10th-level Path of the Runebound feature

The runes carved into your flesh have fused permanently with your spirit.

Runes Awakened

While you are raging, you gain the following benefits:

  • You have advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

  • You are resistant to force damage.

Runic Persistence

When your Rage ends, the runes do not immediately fade.

  • Until the end of your next turn after your Rage ends, you retain one benefit of the Runic Aspect you chose when you entered that Rage (your choice).

Avatar of the Crimson Script

Level 14 Feature: Avatar of the Crimson Script

Design Goal

Official Barbarian Level 14 features:

  • dramatically alter Rage

  • add battlefield presence

  • make enemies fear engaging you

This feature does all three.

Avatar of the Crimson Script

14th-level Path of the Runebound feature

When you rage, the crimson runes across your body blaze like living fire, transforming you into a living conduit of ancient power.

While you are raging, you gain the following benefits:

🔴 Living Runes

  • You are immune to being frightened and stunned.

  • Your melee weapon attacks ignore resistance to their damage type.

🔴 Runic Eruption

  • At the start of each of your turns while raging, each enemy of your choice within 5 feet of you takes damage equal to your Rage Damage bonus.

  • The damage type is the same as your weapon’s damage or force (your choice each Rage).

🔴 Unbound Surge

  • You can use Runic Surge twice per Rage, instead of once.
