Rogue
Base Class: Rogue

As a Contriver, you are the one pulling together nifty inventions and designs in order to get yourself out of sticky situations or into hard to reach places. Where others rely on magic or brute force, a Contriver relies on preparation, precision, and devices built from scratch to bamboozle the enemy.

Level 3: Field Engineering

When you choose this archetype at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with Tinker’s Tools. If you already have it, you gain expertise with them.

You construct two signature devices: the Popsykle and the Whipspike.

Popsykle

You construct a modified blowgun with a rotating chamber capable of holding up to 6 specially crafted beads.

The Popsykle counts as a simple ranged weapon (range 25/100), finesse, and uses darts or your custom beads as ammunition.

You can craft beads during a short rest provided you have appropriate materials.

You can maintain a number of crafted beads equal to your proficiency bonus at one time.

Bead Types (Level 3)

You have learned how to craft the following:

Black Powder Bead

Cost: 10 gp in materials

Crafting: Short rest

When you hit a creature with a bead attack, the bead detonates.

The target takes:

• Normal blowgun damage

• +2d6 fire damage

Flammable objects not worn or carried ignite. The explosion is audible within 60 feet.

If your attack roll exceeds the target’s AC by 5 or more, the creature is pushed 5 feet away from you (Large or smaller).

A bead is destroyed on use.

Misfire

If you roll a natural 1 on an attack with the Popsykle, roll on the Misfire table:

1 – Powder flare: You take 1d6 fire damage.

2 – Friendly Fire: The attack targets another PC nearby instead.

3 – Jam: The Popsykle cannot be used until you spend an action clearing it.

4 – Concussive bang: You and any creature within 5ft must succeed on a Con save (DC = 8 + proficiency + Dex) or be deafened until the end of their next turn.

Whipspike

You construct a wrist-mounted spike launcher.

As part of the Attack action, you can make a ranged attack (range 60 ft) with the Whipspike. On a hit, it deals 1d6 piercing damage (plus modifier) and has the finesse property.

If you successfully hit a target with the Whipspike, you may attempt a second attack as a bonus action with the Whipspike against the same target. This attack deals 1d4 piercing damage plus your modifier.

The spike instantly retracts after each attack.

This weapon qualifies for Sneak Attack.

Level 9: Anchored Spike

You upgrade your Whipspike with reinforced cable housing.

If you hit a solid surface (such as a wall, beam, or sturdy structure) within range, you may use a bonus action to pull yourself in a straight line toward that point, moving up to 30 feet. This movement does not provoke opportunity attacks.

You must have a clear path and a secure anchor point.

Level 13: Slick Moves

You construct a small tubular device in your gauntlet that discharges oil across an area of 10ft square within five feet of yourself.

The area becomes difficult terrain for 1 minute and creates entering or starting their turn there must make a DEX Save or fall prone.  A creature makes this Save only once per turn.

If lit, the oil burns for 2 rounds.  Creatures entering or ending their turn there take 5 Fire damage.

Once used, the oil must be replenished during a short rest.

Level 17: Hood Wink

You have constructed a device in the seal of your hood that can be activated when the hood is raised.

It disperses nauseous gas similar to the Smoke Screen spell as follows:

A thick cloud of black smoke covers a 10-foot radius sphere around you which you are impervious to. This smoke spreads around corners. It lasts for the duration or until strong wind disperses the fog, ending the spell. Its area is heavily obscured.

When a creature enters the spell's area for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there, that creature must make a Constitution saving throw. The creature takes 2d8 poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. Constructs and undead are immune to this damage.

You can use this feature once per long rest.
