Cleric
Base Class: Cleric

In the unfathomable depths of the Underdark, the terrible creatures known as beholders lord of over weaker creatures, doing justice to their other moniker of eye tyrants. In rare occassions, there are deranged individuals amongst their underlings who come to the same conclusion as their terrible masters have: beholders are the epitome of power in the world. These often mad sycophants wish only to bask in the majesty of their overlords, starting to pray to the Great Mother and lavishing devotion upon the beholder they call master. Somewhere in history, one beholder sought to find out how far he could manipulate such devotion and, perhaps through divine inspiration, he came upon the concept of the ocular adept.

These individuals would undergo a terrible and possibly deadly ritual, in which a the eye of an insignificant kin to beholders would be implanted into a hole that was magically drilled in the adept-to-be's forehead. If the adept survived the magical survey and did not join the donor eyeball in its death throes, the two creatures would become inexorably linked, granting the ocular adept various abilities akin to their terrible overlords. They prayed to the Great Mother to receive their divine powers and, even though they were considered peculiarities or interesting nuisances at best, the goddess rarely saw fit to focus her attention on these mere mortal beings.

In recent history, a small sect of adepts of the eyes lost their [you know what] master to adventurers and sought out a new master. They somehow came into communion with Ghaunadar, the Elder Eye, and transferred their devotion to this elder god, in exchange for protection from the Great Mother's wrath. This sect is slowly gaining more adepts, but the progress is painstaking, as their 'high priestess' has a lesser grasp of the magics involved with the surgery, meaning that fewer survive the harrowing ritual. However, the priestess is fast becoming more experienced...

Ocular Adept Spells

Certain spells could be changed to better fit the flavour of this subclass, however, this would mean that it could not be shared with the public. Sleep could be replaced for a certain 1st level spell with 'ray' in the title, cone of cold could be replaced with a 5th level necromancy spell from Xanathar's that deals necrotic damage and eyebite could be replaced with a more powerful version of charm person, which also works on more monstrous creatures. If you get my drift. :)

Initiate of the Eye

Once the adept receives his third eye, he gains preternatural senses, as the strange remnant psyche of the eye alerts him to peculiarities that might otherwise pass the adept by. At 1st level, the adept becomes proficient with the Perception skill and doubles his proficiency bonus for all ability checks made with that skill. The eye also bestows darkvision with a range of 30 ft. upon the adept. Finally, the adept gains the ray of frost cantrip, which counts as a cleric cantrip for the adept.

Channel Divinity: none

Ocular Adepts are practically pretenders to the faith of the Great Mother and the goddess does not really take them seriously as true followers. While she does allow them greater magical versatility in emulating their beholder masters, she refrains from bestowing any additional powers with which to channel her divine powers. While adepts gain access to two more spells that they have always prepared at level 11, they do not receive any additional applications of Channel Divinity.

The small sect that has pledged themselves to Ghaunadar also doesn't receive any Channel Divinity powers. The Elder Eye is amused by their devotion, but has yet to decide whether or not the adepts will actually prove useful.

Behold the Might of the Eye!

Starting at 6th level, you may choose to cast one of your domain spells through your third eye. A spell cast in this way does not consume a spell slot, but can only be cast at its base level, and all component requirements are waved. After you cast a spell in this manner, the third eye cannot be used again to cast a spell until after a long rest.

Dreadful Gaze

At 8th level, you gain proficiency in the Intimidation skill, if you aren't already. Against any creature that isn't immune to being frightened, you gain advantage on all ability checks using the skill.

In addition, you add your Wisdom modifier to the damage you deal with your domain spells and the ray of frost cantrip.

Apotheosis of the Eye

At 17th level, you gain the ability to cast antimagic field through your third eye once per long rest. This does not count towards the limit of the level 6 ability Behold the Might of the Eye!
