Rogue
Base Class: Rogue

Some rogues learn to disappear.

Others learn to become someone else entirely.

The Oni Maskbearers are artisans of identity — thieves of instinct, sculptors of vice, and collectors of emotional truths too sharp for ordinary souls to hold. Through lacquer, ritual pigment, and whispered invocations, they craft masks that do not merely conceal the face, but awaken something behind it.

Each mask embodies an archetype: Wrath. Greed. Mockery. Hunger. Pride. Despair. Lust. Envy. Sloth. Paranoia. Deceit. Apathy.

These are not costumes.

They are distilled fragments of an ancient oni spirit — a being of fractured selves and layered hungers. The spirit does not command its bearer. It does not issue orders. It does not speak in words.

It leans.

When you wear a mask, your instincts tilt. Your thoughts sharpen along a particular edge. You do not lose yourself — not at first. Instead, you discover how easily you can justify becoming something slightly different.

A Maskbearer survives not because they are the strongest in the room.

They survive because they are never just one thing.

The Craft of Faces

Oni masks are not found. They are forged.

Pigment is mixed with ash. Lacquer is cured in silence. The final brushstroke is laid with intent — anger remembered, humiliation endured, desire suppressed, greed indulged. The mask is completed only when its emotion is understood.

When worn, the mask is cool against the skin.

After battle, it is always warm.

Level 3: Artisan of the Hidden Face

You learn to craft and bind supernatural oni masks — vessels of distilled emotional archetypes.

Mask Crafting

At 3rd level, you craft three Oni Masks of your choice. Each mask embodies a specific emotional archetype (such as Deceit, Wrath, Pride, Greed, Mockery, etc.).

  • You can craft additional masks at higher levels as determined by your DM, but you can possess no more than five masks total at any time.

  • Crafting a new mask requires 8 hours of work and 100 gp worth of rare pigments, lacquer, and ritual components.

Reforging a Mask

Once your mask capstone of 5 has been reached to change masks you must commence a ritual. During a Long Rest, you may perform a ritual of unmaking, destroying one mask you possess and crafting a new mask in its place. The ritual requires 50 gp in materials, and the destroyed mask cannot be restored except by crafting it again.

As the mask breaks, you feel a part of its instinct fade — replaced by something new.

Wearing a Mask

  • You can don or remove a mask as a Bonus Action.

  • You can wear only one mask at a time.

  • You gain a mask’s benefits only while wearing it.

  • If you are incapacitated, the mask’s magical properties are suppressed until the end of your next turn.

Each mask has three tiers of power:

  • Instinct (3rd level feature)

  • Surge (9th level feature)

  • Mastery (13th level feature)

You unlock each tier as you reach the corresponding Rogue level.

Level 9: Fractured Persona

You have learned to transition between identities with unsettling fluidity.

When you roll Initiative, you may immediately don a mask without using a Bonus Action. If you already have a mask donned you may swap to another mask you have crafted without using a bonus action.

Additionally, once per Short or Long Rest, when you deal Sneak Attack damage, you may switch to a different mask you possess without using an action.

Your personality shifts like lacquer catching light — subtle, controlled, deliberate.

Level 13: Mask Mastery

You have mastered the emotional resonance of your crafted faces.

While wearing a mask, you gain resistance to Psychic damage.

In addition, once per Long Rest, when you fail a saving throw, you may choose to succeed instead as the mask absorbs the mental strain — cracking visibly until you complete a Long Rest.

The crack vanishes with your rest… but for a moment, the mask looked almost alive.

Level 17: Manifest Oni

You no longer merely channel your masks — you become the thing that birthed them.

As a Bonus Action, you may allow the bound oni spirit to overtake you, manifesting your Oni Form for 1 minute. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a Long Rest.

While in Oni Form:

  • You grow horns and your voice echoes unnaturally.

  • You gain a flying speed equal to your walking speed (hover).

  • You gain resistance to Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing damage.

  • At the start of each of your turns, you may choose any mask you possess. You gain all of that mask’s features (Instinct, Surge, and Mastery) until the start of your next turn.

  • Once per turn when you deal Sneak Attack damage, you may force the target to make a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + PB + Dex mod) on a failure you deal additional Psychic or Necrotic damage (your choice) equal to your Sneak Attack dice and the target becomes Frightened of you until the end of your next turn.

When Oni Form ends, you must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or gain one level of Exhaustion as the spirit recedes.

The masks are warm to the touch for hours afterward.

Emotional masks

Emotional Masks

Each Emotional Mask houses a bound oni spirit embodying a primal emotional archetype. While you wear a mask, its features apply to you. If you remove the mask, all its benefits immediately end.
