Wizard
Base Class: Wizard

Somewhere deep in the ocean of depths and flood, the colors shift, hues distorting to those of the neathbow, taking great power from the magical sources in the depths.

Wizards of the school of Chromomancy have studied with or after artisans of the neathbow, those who use the colors to their benefit. After much studying, Chromomancers can harness each of the neathbow's component colors for different effects.

After a long enough amount of time dabbling with the neathbow, a Chromomancer may begin to see some... interesting, if not adverse, effects on their body and mind. In exchange for the power granted to a Chromomancer, the neathbow's corruption leads to some being shunned due to the numerous and varied effects it can have.

Chromomancy Savant

From 2nd level onwards, the gold and time to copy the following spells into your spellbook is halved:

Dancing Lights, Green-Flame Blade, Chromatic Orb, Color Spray, Fog Cloud, Silent Image, Mind Spike, Pyrotechnics, Sickening Radiance, Vitriolic Sphere, Geas, Modify Memory, Negative Energy Flood, Wall of Light, Mental Prison, Sunbeam, Crown of Stars, Prismatic Spray, Sunburst, Weird.

Tonal Shift

Starting at 2nd level, the effects of using the Neathbow have begun to take their toll on you. Once per short rest or long rest, you may cast the spell Chromatic Orb at 1st level without requiring the use of a spell slot, replacing the damage dealt with one of the following effects. If the attack hits, the target suffers from the corresponding effect until the end of its next turn. At level 6, the number of free casts increases to 2 per rest. At level 10, it increases to 3.

  • Apocyan: The target loses sight of the world around them and can only focus on their desired future, and is Blinded.
  • Chloic: The target looks too deeply into the mirror of its own mind and is Poisoned.
  • Desidine: The target is reminded of happier times, and is Charmed by you.
  • Gant: The target's soul drains away, eaten by the Gant. It has disadvantage on Ability Checks and Saving Throws.
  • Oblitus: The target forgets the last minute of its life, and is Surprised.
  • Peligin: The target sees their deepest fear in their head and is Frightened, with you as its source of fear.
  • Violant: The target's mind is filled with memories it wishes it could suppress, and it will roll on the Confusion table at the beginning of its next turn.

Tinted and Tainted

Starting at 6th level, others begin to notice that you have have researched the colors of the neathbow. Your eyes have glazed over in the color you studied the most, and making eye contact with you can have a host of effects depending on their color. Along with your eyes, you have learned how to harness your specific color in combat. Choose one color from the options below. When you gain new subclass features at levels 10 and 14, the choice you make here will determine what effect of the features you are given.

Apocyan

Your eyes have become Apocyan, a shade similar to cyan. Twice per long rest, you may cast the Misty Step spell without expending any spell slots and without requiring material components or spell focuses. When Misty Step is cast using this feature, its range extends to 60 feet.

Chloic

Your eyes glass over, smooth and reflective like mirrors - or the sea's surface. Once per long rest, you may look past the mirror and cast the True Seeing spell without expending any spell slots and without requiring material components or spell focuses. Alongside that, you may also cast Mirror Image once per short or long rest without expending any spell slots and without requiring material components or spell focuses.

Desidine

Your eyes have become Desidine, a shade similar to amber. Once per long rest, you may cast the Ray of Sickness spell at 6th level without expending any spell slots and without requiring any material components or spell focuses. Instead of Poison damage, the spell deals Radiant damage. If the target of the spell fails its Constitution saving throw, it becomes Blinded instead of Poisoned.

Gant

Your eyes have become Gant, looking to others like holes in the world. Once per long rest, you may cast the Dispel Magic spell at 5th level and the Silence spell at 2nd level without expending any spell slots and without requiring material components or spell focuses.

Oblitus

Your eyes have become Oblitus, a shade similar to violet. Once per long rest, you may cast the Modify Memory spell at 5th level without expending any spell slots and without requiring any material components or spell focuses. If the target is within 5 feet, it has disadvantage on Modify Memory's wisdom saving throw. As a result of Oblitus' memory-loss effects, this form of the Modify Memory spell can only erase memories, not reform or create them.

Peligin

Your eyes have become Peligin, a deep gray bordering on black. Three times per long rest, you may cast the Darkness spell without expending any spell slots and without requiring any material components or spell focuses. Alongside that, you gain Darkvision to a distance of 30 feet. If you already had Darkvision, extend its range by a further 30 feet.

Violant

Your eyes have become Violant, a shade similar to burgundy. Twice per long rest, you may cast the Mind Spike spell at 4th level without expending any spell slots and without requiring any material components or spell focuses. If you can make eye contact with the target, it has disadvantage on the spell's wisdom saving throw. If the target fails the spell's saving throw, it gains 2 levels of Exhaustion.

Like Poison in the Blood

Starting at 10th level, your studying begins to go too far. The color from your eyes begins to spread, first tinging the skin around your face and soon in your veins and arteries, each beat of your heart pulsing the venom of an impossible rainbow. The color you chose to represent when you received your 6th-level feature determines and matches the color and effect you receive from this feature.

Apocyan

You thought Apocyan, the color of freedom and the sea, would not corrupt you. As it spreads through your body and mind, you still willingly accept it. Even when it eventually bubbles up in your skin like boils to break free of the prison of your flesh, you will see it as joyous. Once per long rest, you may cast the Blight spell at 4th level without expending any spell slots and without requiring any material components or spell focuses. Alongside that, any spell you can cast that moves you through space (eg. Misty Step, Far Step, Dimension Door) may be cast while you are Restrained or Grappled; doing so ends that condition.

Chloic

When you see yourself in the mirror, you look better than you ever have before! When you turn your back on the mirror, your reflection turns after you do. One night you accidentally cut yourself, and what comes out is more like quicksilver than blood. Twice per long rest, you may cast the Passwall spell at 5th level without expending any spell slots and without requiring any material components or spell focuses. You also gain the Skilled feat.

Desidine

How warmly the sun shines on you. Its bright rays shine on your mind even in the darkest of places. You gain 60 feet of Darkvision. If you already had Darkvision before gaining this feature, you are instead the source of a permanent bright light inside of a 20-foot diameter that only you can see. Once per long rest, you may cast the Daylight spell at 3rd level without expending any spell slots and without requiring any material components or spell focuses. Once per long rest, you may cast the Sickening Radiance spell at 4th level without expending any spell slots and without requiring any material components or spell focuses.

Gant

There is no magic, no nothing. It is all going, pulling itself with its own weight into the Gant abyss. When you open your mouth to cast, no sound comes out. You no longer require verbal components for spells, but other requirements still apply. You also gain expertise in nullifying magic around you. When you cast the Counterspell spell, you gain advantage when rolling for the spell's effects.

Oblitus

You have already forgotten the world, what more is there than Oblitus? Your memory is so full of holes that you gain advantage on saving throws against being Charmed, Frightened, and Confused. Alongside that, when you cast any spell listed in your 2nd-level feature "Chromomancy Savant," you may choose to cast the Wizard cantrip Mind Sliver as a free action on the same target, or one of the targets if there are multiple. (Keep in mind the increasingly powerful effects of Mind Sliver as player level increases.)

Peligin

Your hands are stained black with soot, or ink, or the Peligin magic coursing through your body. When you bleed, it comes out thick and black like crude oil. Your natural Armor Class increases by 1. Twice per long rest, you may cast the Fear spell at 3rd level without expending any spell slots and without requiring any material components or spell focuses. Once per long rest, you may cast the Evard's Black Tentacles spell at 4th level without expending any spell slots and without requiring any material components or spell focuses. If you cast Evard's Black Tentacles using this ability, the spell no longer requires concentration. Instead, it lasts until the end of your turn 2 rounds of combat from the time of its casting.

Violant

Your head is pounding. It's always pounding. The pain started a while ago and has only gotten worse. Someone must be punished for this transgression. Once per long rest, you may cast the Raulothim's Psychic Lance spell at 4th level without expending any spell slots and without requiring any spell focuses. Alongside this, any time a creature fails a saving throw against one of your spells, it takes additional psychic damage equal to your wizard level.

Polluted Heart, Purified Mind

Starting at 14th level, you become one with your chosen color. Your blood is permanently dyed, your heart extrudes pure Neathbow. While your body undergoes a transformation to accept its new passenger, your mind utilizes the forbidden and dangerous knowledge as though you have known this power your entire life. The color you chose to represent when you received your 6th-level and 10th-level features determines and matches the color and effect you receive from this feature.

Apocyan

There is freedom! O day of days! The truth of Apocyan must spread from you unto the world, and it does. The color is always churning under your skin, pushing to get free. Are you still in control?

When you take physical damage (Slashing, Piercing, or Bludgeoning), your blood violently explodes out of you in a circular area with a radius of 5 feet centered on you. Creatures in this area must succeed a Dexterity saving throw equal to your Spell Save DC or be dealt 2d10 Necrotic damage. You may also use your reaction to teleport to an unoccupied space up to 10 feet away.

Chloic

When you look at mirrors, what do you see? Past their surfaces, which ripple like a still pool when you press against them, is a world like ours, but pristine. The you on the other side, your perfect and exact form, passes through into our world when you ask it to.

Once per long rest, you may cast the Summon Shadowspawn spell at 6th Level without expending any spell slots and without requiring any spell focuses. When you use this ability to cast Summon Shadowspawn, the material components for the spell become a small mirror with a drop of your blood on it. The creature you summon using this spell resembles your mirror image.

Desidine

The rapturous sun! It is fickle, and it has punished you for disobeying it. Your face is burnt and your eyes hurt constantly, even though you cannot see from them.

When you take this feature, you lose any type of sight you have, including Darkvision, Truesight, and regular Sight. These are replaced by 90 feet of Blindsight.

Gant

When light is gone, there will be darkness. When people are gone, there will be ruin. When magic is gone, when color drains from the universe, Gant will remain. You are its emissary in the world, silently melting the magic from the world as the sea erodes the shore.

Once per long rest, you may cast the Antimagic Field spell at 8th Level without expending any spell slots and without requiring any material components or spell focuses. The Antimagic Field cast using this ability does not require concentration. Instead, it lasts for until the end of your next turn.

Oblitus

All is forgotten. Whoever you are, whoever you were, is lost. You are one with Oblitus, which is one with the world. The world's memories are yours, and yours are the world's.

Your Intelligence score increases by 2, to a maximum of 24. You gain proficiency in the Arcana, History, Nature, and Religion skills. If you already had proficiency in these skills, gain expertise instead. Alongside these benefits, you forget one language and lose proficiency in three other skills, saving throws, languages, weapons, or armor of your choice.

Peligin

What lies in wait in the dark corners of the world? What sits, patiently holding out for the light to go out, on the floor of the deepest seas? Whatever lives in those vast fields of shadow live in Peligin. You live in Peligin, your body melting into the darkness as if the two were one.

When you take this feature, you can see normally in darkness, both magical and nonmagical, to a distance of 120 feet. As an action, you may create a 15-foot radius sphere of magical darkness originating from your head. This sphere lasts for one minute and does not require concentration to maintain. You may use this feature a number of times per long rest equal to your Proficiency bonus.

Violant

Your head is so full of information. Every word you have read about Violant, every spell cast and every experiment run, bear on your mind like a stone you cannot remove. As you've learned more about the subject, your head has hurt more and more. Some nights are sleepless, spent nursing your head and looking deeper into your studies. You have the terrible feeling that if you aren't able to spread this pain to others, it may never end.

Every time you finish a Long Rest, you gain one level of Exhaustion as a result of your constant headaches. The maximum levels of Exhaustion you can reach as a result of this feature is 5, meaning this feature cannot kill you. Instead, when you reach 5 levels of Exhaustion, you stop gaining levels after Long Rests.

This feature grants you specific spells you may cast depending on your level of Exhaustion. When you cast one of these spells using this ability, you lose 2 levels of Exhaustion. Spells cast using this ability do not expend any spell slots and do not require any material components.

Level of Exhaustion Spell available
1 2nd-Level Tasha's Mind Whip
2 3rd-Level Dissonant Whispers
3 4th-Level Raulothim's Psychic Lance
4 5th-Level Negative Energy Flood
