Base Class: Warlock
Some warlocks bargain with archfiends, alien intelligences, or deathless sovereigns. You found something older. A relic of impossible make, an artifact touched by myth, apocalypse, or divinity. Whether it houses a will, channels an ancient principle, or simply recognizes greatness, it has accepted you as its bearer. Your magic does not merely pass through it. It is focused, refined, and made greater by your bond.
When you choose to be this subclass, consult with your DM on an artifact to be yours. This would be a mystery object until your third level when you can access this subclass when the bond is solidified. Aside from this example, you may flavor this however you like.
Relic Bearer
At 3rd level, you form an exclusive bond with a single artifact in your possession, called your bound relic.
-
You must attune to the bound relic if it requires attunement.
-
You can be attuned to only one magic item at a time, and that item must be your bound relic.
-
While attuned to your bound relic, you cannot gain the benefits of any other magic item that requires attunement.
-
If a magic item would function on your person without attunement, the DM may rule its benefits are suppressed while you carry your bound relic, if those benefits would enhance your combat capabilities or spellcasting. Consumables such as potions still function normally.
- The bound relic does however spark magic within you, granting you access to the sorcerer spell table in addition to the warlock spell table.
In addition, while your bound relic is on your person:
-
You can use your bound relic as a spellcasting focus for your warlock spells.
-
You gain Advantage and your Charisma modifier to your wisdom saving throws.
-
If your bound relic is within 60 feet of you, you always know its direction.
-
If another creature willingly takes your bound relic from you or you willingly give it away, you have disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks until the bound relic is returned to you.
Precious Obsession
You also develop an unnatural fixation on your bound relic.
-
You have advantage on checks made to notice if your bound relic has been touched, moved, hidden, or stolen.
-
You have disadvantage on saving throws made to willingly surrender, discard, or destroy your bound relic.
- Your unnatural fixation has also made your bound relic a conduit for your own skill at casting. You can add up to half your proficiency bonus, rounded up, to your spell save DC and spell attack.
Proficiency Bonus 1
Increase your spell Attack and Save DC by 1
Proficiency Bonus 2
Increase your spell Attack and Save DC by 2
Proficiency Bonus 3
Increase your spell Attack and Save DC by 3
Amplifying Conduit
At 6th level, your bound relic intensifies the magic you channel through it.
Once on each of your turns, when you deal damage with a warlock spell, you can add your Charisma modifier to one damage roll of that spell.
In addition, when you cast a warlock spell through your bound relic, you can choose one of the following benefits:
-
increase the spell’s range by 30 feet, if it has a range of at least 5 feet
-
ignore half cover and three-quarters cover for spell attack rolls made as part of that spell
-
gain advantage on one Constitution saving throw made to maintain concentration on that spell before the start of your next turn
You can use this second benefit a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier per long rest.
Inseparable Reliquary
At 10th level, your bond deepens until the relic is almost part of you.
While your bound relic is on your person:
-
You have resistance to damage dealt by spells.
-
You cannot be disarmed of your bound relic against your will unless you are incapacitated.
-
If your bound relic is on the same plane of existence, you can call it to your hand as a bonus action, provided it is not being worn or carried by another creature.
Additionally, if you fail a saving throw, you can choose to succeed instead. Once you use this feature, you cannot use it again until you finish a long rest.
After you use this feature, until the end of your next turn you are unwilling to move farther from your bound relic, and if it is not on your person, you must use your movement to get closer to it if able.
Vessel of the Relic
At 14th level, you and your bound relic become a single channel for greater power.
As a bonus action, you awaken the full union between yourself and your bound relic for 1 minute. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest or expend a warlock spell slot to refresh it.
-
You gain a flying (hover) speed equal to your walking speed.
-
Your warlock spells deal extra damage equal to your proficiency bonus.
-
When a creature you can see forces you to make a saving throw or hits you with an attack, you can use your reaction to project the relic’s power. Reduce the damage taken by 1d10 + your warlock level, or add the same amount as a bonus to the saving throw before knowing whether it succeeds.
-
If you would lose concentration, you can choose not to. Once you prevent concentration loss this way, you cannot do so again until the next time you use this feature.
While in this heightened state you cannot willingly move more than 30 feet from your bound relic for 1 minute.
