The Oath of the Reaper is the noble commitment to ensure that all of life ends when it should. Life is a garden, and every being is a flower. And you are the Reaper. This means not only do you ensure an end, but also a middle and beginning. For Life is as sacred as Death. And to take life before its time, or to prolong death well beyond its intended end, are both horrid sins to be corrected. For a Reaper’s hand is not cold or malicious, but warm and comforting. And those that would believe otherwise have forgotten what it is like to truly live.

Tenets of the Reaper

The tenets of the Oath of the Reaper are about Life as much as it is about Death. One ensures that life lives its longest, but ends all the same. And there are those that would oppose such a balance. Creatures, constructs, and fiends that would deny mortality from overwhelming fear, apathy, or arrogance. Murderers that would bring an undeserved end to those well before their time, either out of ritual or out of pleasure. All are enemies of the Reapers. As life and death can be planned or sudden, paladins of this Oath can find themselves neutral in alignment, yet often for the sake of good as opposed to evil. The tenets read as so.

All Tales have an End. All that will be will eventually not be, regardless of mortality. Death is a precious moment in one’s story, and merely ensures that every moment of life must be lived to its fullest.

Denying your Ending is Futile. Those that would deny mortality – Undead, Constructs, or evil beings seeking to live evermore – fail to understand the pleasures of life, and must be purified.

Forcing an Ending is Vile. A worse sin than living evermore – a life cut short. Those that would bring an end to those well before their time, especially undeserving, are the most heinous of creatures. In the Garden of Life, what are those that reap lives before their time? Pests.

Life Everlasting. Watching over Death means also watching over Life. When one’s end would be premature, be there to heal and nurture. For life is a gift.

Level 3: Channel Divinity

When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity options.

Death’s Repose

You can use your Channel Divinity to ensure a creature does not die before its time. As an action, you can use Lay on Hands on a target within 60 feet of you as though they were within touching distance. You may heal them up to your Proficiency x 5 points of Lay on Hands. If this creature is in the dying state, you immediately stabilize them as well as heal them. This will use your Lay on Hands resource.

Life for a Life

You can use your Channel Divinity to turn one creature’s loss into healing for others. As a bonus action, after your next strike, add half the damage value to your Lay on Hands. You can only convert this damage to a max of your Proficiency x 5 points for Lay on Hands. Life for a Life will expire if you do not strike a target within one minute.

Level 7: Out of Turn

Starting at level 7, you enforce when a creature’s time to take harm occurs, and punish those that would defy this order. You can use your reaction when someone takes damage from an enemy and they are both within 10 feet of you. This will convert half the damage taken by the ally and apply it to the target as radiant damage. Should this enemy be a fiend, undead, or construct, they will have their movement speed reduced to zero until the start of their next turn. At level 15, the radius which you can use this reaction for is 30 feet.

Level 15: Golden Autumn

Starting at level 15, you may draw from the warmth of life from the fallen to bolster those who still have time. When a creature within 30 feet of you is reduced to 0 HP, you can use your reaction to harvest or nurture them.

  • If it was an ally: You immediately stabilize them, granting them temporary Hit Points equal to your Paladin Level.
  • If it was an enemy: You prune their essence. One creature of your choice within the radius regains hit points equal to 1d8 + your Charisma modifier.

Level 20: Reaper Manifest

At 20th level, you take the form of the Reaper of the Dead. Spend an action to radiate a 30-foot-radius aura of golden twilight for one minute. This radius moves with you. The effects of this aura is:

  • You along with your allies in this aura gain a resistance to Necrotic and Radiant damage.
  • Enemies within this aura cannot regain hit points. Their time is near.
  • Once per turn, when you deal damage to a creature that is not undead or a construct, you also reap their very energy. You or an ally within the aura regains hit points equal to half the damage dealt.

Once this feature is used, you cannot use it again until you finish a long rest.
