Base Class: Ranger
The Cryptozoologist is the backbone of the research community. This particular variant is able to pull upon years of research to allow them to pinpoint specific weaknesses and advantages for the party, while also knowing just how to get out of the way when needed. A quiet soul by nature, don't underestimate them either.
Level 3: No, I said go after the LEFT arm!
Years of academic study have paid off, and you're now more easily able to tell weaknesses and resistances through investigation and perception checks on creatures. Hopefully you'll live long enough to be able to put that knowledge to use!
Level 3: Oh, that's my favorite subject!
You gain one of the following feature options of your choice. Whenever you finish a Short or Long Rest, you can replace the chosen option with the other one.
Just how to hit them.
Your tenacity can wear down even the most resilient foes. When you hit a creature with a weapon, the weapon deals an extra 1d8 damage to the target if it’s missing any of its Hit Points. You can deal this extra damage only once per turn. Only applicable if you've chosen this as your favorite cryptid. (you may choose up to two types)
They can't see you if you don't move...
Against favored Cryptid types (of which you can choose up to two) You gain an additional 1d6 in hiding outside of combat. (stealth)
Level 7: Want to see Jerry do a Trick?
Allows access to the attached spells
Longstrider
Jump
Mage Armor
Invisibility
Each spell can be cast once per long rest, and exclusively on your summoned animal.
Level 11: Yeah, let me get back to my studies.
Once per combat you may disengage for free if you've landed an attack this turn.
Level 15: I didn't get my PHD to go out like this!
Once per long rest, when reduced to 0 hp you may choose to not go down. Instead, gain an additional action this turn. If you successfully kill an enemy stay up with however much damage you dealt on the killing blow as temp HP and one health. If not, go down at the start of the next full round, regardless of initiative placement. If you go down, immediately fail your first saving throw. Can elect to not use feature.
