Fighter
Base Class: Fighter

A Crusader is a warrior who has taken up arms in service to something sacred. They are not merely soldiers, mercenaries, or knights with religious decoration. A Crusader is a battlefield instrument of divine purpose: a shield before the innocent, a blade against the profane, and a living banner for a cause greater than survival.

Where other Fighters rely solely on training, instinct, and discipline, Crusaders bind martial skill to sacred practice. Their techniques are reinforced by prayer, liturgy, relics, holy signs, and battlefield rites. They may whisper invocations before a duel, carve consecrated marks into their weapons, anoint their armor with oil and ash, or recite the names of saints and martyrs as they march into war.

A Crusader’s magic is not the broad miracle-working of a full Cleric. It is narrower, harder, and more immediate. Their spells are tools of war: blessings to steady an ally’s hand, wards to turn aside death, radiant fire to punish the unclean, and divine commands to break the will of the enemy. A Crusader does not retreat to the rear of the battlefield to pray from safety. They pray while advancing.

They are the hymn sung under a rain of arrows.
They are the shield raised at the temple gate.
They are the final warning before judgment falls.

Sacred Warriors, Not Paladins

Crusaders are often mistaken for Paladins, but their divine power works differently.

A Paladin is bound by an oath. Their strength flows from conviction, vow, and moral force. A Paladin is defined by the sacred promise they make.

A Cleric is a vessel of divine authority. Their power comes through worship, ordination, revelation, or chosen service. A Cleric speaks with the weight of the divine behind them.

A Crusader, by contrast, is a Fighter who has been sanctified for war. They are trained first as warriors, then taught to wield fragments of divine power through disciplined ritual. Their faith may be deep and personal, but their magic is not necessarily the result of priesthood. Some are ordained. Others are not. Some serve gods. Others serve sacred philosophies, ancestral spirits, celestial patrons, dead saints, forgotten temples, or holy military orders.

A Crusader does not need to preach.

Their sermon is the battlefield.

Level 3: 3rd Level: Crusader Spellcasting

At 3rd level, the Crusader learns to channel divine magic through disciplined prayer, sacred rites, and battlefield devotion. They gain limited spellcasting from the Cleric spell list, using Wisdom as their spellcasting ability. Most of their spells focus on protection, healing, radiant judgment, and strengthening allies in battle. Unlike a full Cleric, the Crusader’s magic is narrow and martial, meant to support their role as a frontline holy warrior.

Level 3: 3rd Level: Crusader’s Armament

You bind a weapon through prayer and sacred rite. You can summon it to your hand and use it as a spellcasting focus.

Level 7: 7th Level: Battle Prayer

When you cast a cantrip as your action, you can make one weapon attack as a bonus action.

Level 10: 10th Level: Mark of Judgement

When you hit a creature with a weapon attack, it has disadvantage on the next saving throw it makes against a Crusader spell you cast before the end of your next turn

Level 15: 15th Level: Pilgrim’s Step

Starting at 15th level, you can use your holy symbol to mark a place of sacred passage. As an action, you may touch your holy symbol to a surface, object, or space within 5 feet of you, leaving behind a faint divine mark that lasts for 1 minute. While the mark remains and is within 30 feet of you, you can use a bonus action to teleport to an unoccupied space within 5 feet of the marked location.

When you teleport in this way, your movement appears as a flash of divine light, drifting ash, radiant mist, spectral wings, falling feathers, or another sacred manifestation appropriate to your faith. Once you use this feature, you cannot use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

Level 18: 18th Level: Greater Battle Prayer

When you cast any spell as your action, you can make one weapon attack as a bonus action.
