Bard
Base Class: Bard

Bards of the College of Misfortunes don’t shy away from failure, they embrace it, exploit it, and twist it into performance. Where others see an accident, these bards see an opening. They delight in the stumble before the fall, the tension before the coin flip, and the chaos that follows. For them, the unpredictable is not something to fear, but something to conduct.

These bards wield a unique magical tool: the Jinx Table, a chaotic wellspring of ill fate they can tap into when luck turns sour.

Level 3: Level 3: Fortune's Folly

3rd-Level College of Misfortunes Feature

When you join the College of Misfortunes at 3rd level, you gain the following benefits.

Jinx focus : You can choose from the following to be your arcane focus instead of an instrument: a two-headed coin, a cursed rabbit’s foot, a broken hand mirror or a voodoo doll. A jinx focus is necessary in order to access your Jinx Table.

Harvester of Misfortune. When a creature within 30 feet rolls a natural 1 on a d20 test, you regain one expended use of your Bardic Inspiration. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus. You regain all uses after a long rest.

Level 3: Weave of Calamity

3rd-Level College of Misfortunes Feature

You have mastered the art of channeling precise misfortunes at the perfect moment.

As a Bonus Action, you can expend one use of your Bardic Inspiration to roll your Bardic Inspiration die and consult the Jinx Table. When you do, choose one of the following:

  • Bestow. You immediately place the jinx on a creature within 60 feet of you as part of the same Bonus Action. Jinxes can remain on the creature for up to 1 minute, activating the next time that trigger occurs.
  • Hold. You retain the jinx and may release it later for the cost of a Bonus Action.

A held jinx fades unused when you finish a Long Rest. You can retain only one jinx at a time; rolling on the Jinx Table replaces the jinx you are currently holding. A creature can be affected by only one jinx at a time; if a new jinx is bestowed upon it, the newer effect replaces the older one. If a jinx requires a saving throw, the DC equals your Spell Save DC.

At level 14th the number of Jinxes you can bestow or hold increases to two.

Jinx Table

Bardic Insp. Die Jinx
1 Fledgling Focus. The next time the target makes an ability check, it has disadvantage on the roll as its mind is heavily clouded or distracted.
2 Loose Footing. The next time the target moves more than 5 feet, it must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or fall prone and take damage equal to one roll of your Bardic Inspiration die.
3 Butterfingers Curse. The next time the target makes an attack roll, it must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, the target misses and drops one weapon it is holding into a random space within 5ft.
4 Hexed Tongue. The next time the target cast a spell, it must succeed in a Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, the spell fails, the action and spell slot are wasted.
5 Albatross Mind. The target must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, the target has the Incapacitated until the end of its turn.
6 Schadenfreude. The next time the target fails a saving throw, it immediately takes psychic damage equal to one roll of your Bardic Inspiration die plus your Charisma modifier. If the saving throw was made against a spell, this damage is dealt before the spell takes effect.
7 Faulty Gear. The next time a creature makes an attack roll against the target, roll your Bardic Inspiration die and subtract the result from the target's Armor Class until the start of its next turn.
8 Black Cat's Gaze. The target must make a Constitution saving throw, on a failure it has the Blinded condition until the end of its next turn.
9 Karmic Backlash. The next time the target makes an attack roll, it takes damage equals to two rolls of your Bardic Inspiration die. This damage is of the same type dealt by its own attack.
10 Spilled Salt. The target must make a Intelligence saving throw. On a failure, it has the frightened condition until the start of your next turn. While Frightened, a creature's Speed is halved, and it can take either an Action or a Bonus Action, not both.
11 Murphy's Law. The target makes a Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, it takes force damage equal to three rolls of your Bardic Inspiration die plus your Charisma modifier and is stunned until the end of its next turn. On a success, it takes half damage and it's not stunned.
12 Friday the 13th. You determine the Jinx's effect by choosing one of the rows in this table.

Level 6: Level 6: Misfortune's Shadow

6th-Level College of Misfortunes Feature

You radiate an unsettling aura of misfortune, subtly tugging at the threads of fate around you.

You always have the Bane spell prepared, and it doesn't count against the number of spells you have prepared. When you cast it using this feature, its range increases to 60 feet and it doesn't require Concentration.

Once per Long Rest, you can cast Bane this way without expending a spell slot.

Creatures that currently have a jinx bestowed upon them will automatically fail their saving throw against Bane.

Whenever a creature affected by your Bane fails an attack roll or saving throw and you don't currently have a retained jinx, you can roll on the Jinx Table without expending a use of your Bardic Inspiration (no action required).

You regain all uses after a Long Rest or by expending a spell slot of 3rd level or higher.

Level 6: Level 6: Bending Chaos

6th-Level College of Misfortunes Feature

You can twist a spell's failure into an unexpected omen for someone else.

When you cast a spell that targets only one creature and that creature succeeds on its saving throw, you can use your Reaction to redirect the spell to a different creature you can see within 30 feet of the original target. You can only use this feature if the spell has no effect on a successful saving throw.

The new target must make the same saving throw against your Spell Save DC. On a success, the spell ends with no effect.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.

Level 14: Level 14: Master of Mayhem

14th-Level College of Misfortunes Feature

At 14th level, you become a virtuoso of bad luck. Whenever you roll on the Jinx Table, you roll twice per the price of one Bardic Inspiration. You can only retain 2 Jinx at a time, whenever you roll on the Jinx table again you must replace the old retained Jinxes for the new ones.
