Base Class: Wizard
While all wizards are known for their propensity for knowledge, research, and all-around bookish nature, Research Scholars put all the rest to shame. Their abilities to find, recall, and decipher information make them the best research and study companions around. They are most known for their love of knowledge, understanding and truth, as well as their sharp minds and sharper recall. Their experience plumbing the depths of the library gives them a deeper understanding of magic, history, and any other subject they could get their hands on.
Scholarly Knowledge
When you choose this subclass, you gain the following features.
Arcane Expertise. You gain expertise in Arcana and one other wizard skill of your choice.
Language. You gain an additional language of your choice.
Steel Trap. You gain advantage on all Intelligence skill checks made to find, recall or to decipher information, including written codes.
Favorite Quill
When you gain this feature, you can spend one minute concentrating to create a tiny, magical quill in your hand. The magical quill appears however you describe, but its features remain as follows:
- The quill does not require ink to write. When you write with it, it writes in an ink color of your choice, and you can erase by waving the non-writing end over the text.
- You can dictate to the quill, as long as it is within 5ft. You cannot copy spells, create spell scrolls, forge documents or create maps this way.
- You gain proficiency in either forgery kit or calligrapher's supplies
- When you use the Favorite Quill to copy spells into your spell book, the cost is reduced to 30 minutes and 25gp per spell level
Calligrapher's Supplies
You gain proficiency in Calligrapher's Supplies
Forgery Kit
You gain proficiency with a Forgery Kit
Research Savant
Starting at 2nd level, you are able to apply your research skills to combat as well. Whenever you cast a spell that forces a creature you can see to make a saving throw, you can use your reaction to analyze the creature. If multiple creatures were targeted by the spell, choose one.
When you analyze a creature, you learn all of its damage vulnerabilites, damage resistances, damage immunities, and condition immunities.
Extensive Research
At 6th level, your research abilities continue to pay off. You can read any written language and may write in any language you have seen before (languages you've seen are at the DM's discretion), though you cannot speak them or understood them if heard.
Magical Methods
When you reach 10th level, your research skills have been fine-tuned to the point of almost unnatural speed and knowledge. You gain the following spells, if you do not already have them. If you cast the spells using this feature, you can ignore all material components, including those with a monetary value.
Identify. You can cast this spell at will.
Tongues. You can cast this a number of times equal to your Intelligence modifier. All uses recharge on a long rest.
Legend Lore. You can cast this twice per day. All uses recharge on a long rest.
Quick Study
At 14th level, your skills of deciphering magic have become so advanced that you can recognize and learn spells in the middle of combat. When a creature you can see and hear casts a spell (from any class spell list) you can use your reaction to make an Intelligence (Arcana) check against a DC of 10 + the spell's level. On a success, you gain understanding of the spell just cast, and must use your next action to dictate notes to your Favorite Quill, which it takes on a blank page of your spellbook. For the next minute, you can cast the spell as if it was a wizard spell and you had it prepared, provided you have the components and spell slots available.
You then have 24 hours to copy the spell into your spellbook before the notes disappear. When you copy the spell into your spellbook, Favorite Quill is not as effective, given the haste of your scribbled notes. It takes 1 hour and 100gp per spell level.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to half your proficiency bonus, rounded down, each day. All uses recharge on a long rest.
