Base Class: Barbarian
This barbarian harnesses their own fear to fight harder the more dire the situation becomes.
Impose Fear
When a creature you can see within 15 feet of you deals damage to another creature, you can use your reaction to force the attacker to confront its own fears. The attacker takes necrotic damage equal to the damage rolled for the attack before critical hits or damage modifiers.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Adrenaline Surge
Starting when you choose this path at 3rd level, your fear sharpens into instinctive motion. While raging, your speed increases by 15 feet.
In addition, you have advantage on Dexterity saving throws while raging.
Nightmare Threshold
While you are raging, your adrenaline surges as your health declines. While you are at half your hit point maximum or fewer, your melee weapon attacks deal an extra 1d6 necrotic damage. While you are at one quarter of your hit point maximum or fewer, this damage increases to 2d6 necrotic damage instead, and must succeed on a wisdom saving throw of a DC of 8 + proficiency bonus + Constitution modifier or be frightened until the end of your next turn. This bonus applies once per turn.
Nightmare Ascendancy
While you are raging and at half your hit point maximum or fewer, your body enters its final adrenaline state of survival instinct.
While in this state:
- You gain resistance to all damage except psychic damage.
- When a creature within 15 feet of you hits a creature other than you, you can use your reaction to use Impose Fear without expending a use.
- Your Nightmare Threshold damage is increased by 1d6 (2d6 at half HP or fewer, 3d6 at one quarter HP or fewer).
- Creatures that are frightened of you have disadvantage on attack rolls against targets other than you.
This state ends if your rage ends or you are above half your hit point maximum.
