Death should have been the end of your story.

Instead, you returned.

A Deathbound Echo is a warrior who has crossed the boundary between life and death, only to discover that not everything returned with them. Somewhere between their final breath and their unnatural awakening, a fragment of who they once were became trapped between worlds.

As their martial abilities grow, a Deathbound Echo learns to draw that fragment into the physical world.

It appears as an Echo—a spectral manifestation of the warrior as they existed before death.

For a Reborn Dragonborn, the difference can be unsettling. Where your current body bears cracked scales, deathly features, and the marks of resurrection, your Echo appears healthy and alive. Its scales retain their original brilliance. Its eyes possess the warmth yours may have lost. Its chest rises and falls with breaths you no longer need to take.

It is everything you remember being.

And perhaps everything you have forgotten.

A Warrior Divided

At first, the Echo appears to be nothing more than a supernatural extension of yourself.

It follows your commands. It fights when you fight. It disappears when its purpose is fulfilled.

Through it, you can strike enemies from impossible positions, protect your companions, and confuse opponents who suddenly find themselves facing two versions of the same warrior.

But the stronger you become, the more distinct the Echo appears.

It may turn its head before you do.

Its expression may change when it sees a person or place you don't recognise.

It may reach toward an object from your former life.

Sometimes you may even experience memories through its eyes.

Whether these moments are simply fragments of your damaged memories or evidence of something more is impossible to know.

Echo of the Living

Unlike an ordinary spectral duplicate, your Echo represents the living person you once were.

For a former Silver Gem Dragonborn, the Echo might appear with brilliant silver scales untouched by death, crystalline features gleaming beneath its skin, and cold draconic energy flowing through its body.

Standing beside it can feel like looking into a mirror from another lifetime.

Your Reborn body represents what returned.

Your Echo represents what was left behind.

As your connection strengthens, the line between the two begins to blur.

Memories Through Battle

Combat has a strange way of awakening forgotten pieces of your former life.

A familiar fighting stance might trigger the memory of an old instructor.

A weapon might remind you of someone whose name you've forgotten.

An enemy's battle cry might suddenly transport you back to the moment of your death.

The Echo experiences these moments with you.

Sometimes it may even remember first.

Deathbound Echoes often become obsessed with discovering what their spectral counterpart knows. Some treat their Echo as a weapon. Others consider it a companion, sibling, ghost, or even another version of themselves.

A few refuse to summon it unless absolutely necessary.

They are frightened of what might happen if it ever stops obeying.

The Question of the Soul

No two Deathbound Echoes completely understand what their Echo truly is.

Perhaps it is merely magical energy shaped by memory.

Perhaps it is a fragment of your soul that never returned to your body.

Perhaps your resurrection created two versions of the same person.

Or perhaps the truth is far more disturbing.

What if the Reborn body isn't carrying the original soul at all?

What if the creature you summon beside you is not an Echo of the person you used to be?

What if it is the person you used to be?

A Deathbound Echo therefore fights not only to survive but to understand their own existence.

Every battle strengthens the connection.

Every memory provides another piece of the puzzle.

And every time the Echo appears, one question becomes harder to ignore:

When you returned from death, which one of you actually came back?

👻 Echo of the Living

You can summon a spectral manifestation of the Dragonborn you were before death.

  • As a Bonus Action, manifest your Echo in an unoccupied space you can see within 15 feet.
  • The Echo appears as the Silver Dragonborn you were in life.
  • The Echo can move up to 30 feet on your turn.
  • When you make an attack, you can make the attack as though you were standing in the Echo's space.
  • As a Bonus Action, you can magically swap places with your Echo.
  • The Echo does not take its own turn or act independently.
  • The Echo remains until it is destroyed, dismissed, you become incapacitated, or you finish a Long Rest.

❄️ Memory Bleed

Your Echo carries remnants of your former draconic power.

  • Once per turn, when you hit with a weapon attack originating from your Echo's space, you can deal an additional 1d6 Cold damage.
  • You can use Memory Bleed a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus.
  • You regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.

🧠👻 Memory of the Dragon

Your connection to your Echo allows forgotten training from your former life to briefly return.

  • When you finish a Long Rest, choose one skill in which you are not proficient.
  • You gain proficiency in that skill until you finish your next Long Rest.
  • Alternatively, you can choose one tool in which you are not proficient and gain proficiency with that tool instead.
  • You can only have one proficiency granted by this feature at a tim

💀👻 Two Souls, One Body

Your connection to your Echo has grown strong enough that it can momentarily take your place when a devastating blow strikes.

  • When you take damage while your Echo is manifested and within 30 feet of you, you can use your Reaction to destroy the Echo.
  • When you do so, reduce the damage by 1d10 + your Constitution modifier + your Fighter level.
  • At Level 10, using your current Constitution modifier of +2, the damage reduction is 1d10 + 12.
  • Any remaining damage is dealt to you normally.
  • You can use this feature once per Short or Long Rest.
  • When the Echo is destroyed this way, the spectral image of your former living Dragonborn briefly surrounds your Reborn body.

🐉👻 The Dragon Remembers

Your connection to your Echo has become so powerful that the draconic soul you possessed in life can manifest through both of you at once.

  • When you use your Grave Breath while your Echo is manifested within 30 feet, you can cause a second 15-foot cone of spectral frost to originate from your Echo.
  • You choose the direction of each cone separately.
  • Creatures in either cone make the normal Constitution saving throw against your Grave Breath.
  • A creature caught in both cones makes only one saving throw.
  • If a creature is caught in both cones and fails its saving throw, it takes an additional 2d10 Cold damage.
  • On a successful saving throw, the creature takes half of the normal Grave Breath damage and does not take the additional damage.
  • Using this feature still expends only one use of Grave Breath.
  • Once you use The Dragon Remembers, you can't use it again until you finish a Short or Long Rest.

Visually, your Echo becomes completely solid for an instant. Both versions of you inhale together before unleashing silver-white grave frost from opposite sides of the battlefield.

💀🐉 I Have Died Before

Your bond with your Echo reaches its final stage. When your Reborn body falls, the living Dragonborn reflected within your Echo can temporarily take your place.

  • When you are reduced to 0 hit points but aren't killed outright, you can use this feature instead of falling unconscious.
  • Your Reborn body disappears into spectral mist, and your Echo becomes solid in its space.
  • You temporarily take the appearance of the Silver Dragonborn you were in life.
  • You immediately gain 36 temporary hit points, equal to twice your Fighter level.
  • Your walking speed increases by 10 feet.
  • Once on each of your turns when you hit with a weapon attack, you deal an additional 1d10 Cold damage.
  • This transformation lasts for 1 minute.
  • You remain conscious and can act normally while the transformation lasts.
  • If you still have temporary hit points when the transformation ends, your Reborn body reforms in your space and you have 1 hit point.
  • If the temporary hit points granted by this feature are reduced to 0, your transformation immediately ends and you fall unconscious at 0 hit points.
  • Once you use I Have Died Before, you can't use it again until you finish a Long Rest.

Appearance: For that single minute, the Reborn creature disappears. In her place stands the brilliant Silver Dragonborn she was before she died, as though death had never touched her.

Then the minute ends...

and the grave takes its piece of her back.
