Monk
Base Class: Monk

Unlike the Way of the Ascendant Dragon, those who follow the path of the Awakened Spark have been touched by a specific dragon's power. Rather than channeling this might into spells as a Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer would, these warriors channel the elemental energies of their benefactor into themselves, transforming into living weapons to destroy their foes before they can render harm and bolstering their own resilience so they may become a living shield to safeguard their allies.

When you choose this subclass, work with your DM to determine your benefactor dragon and its associated elemental damage type (for example, Cold for a silver dragon, Fire for a red dragon, or Acid for a black dragon).

Level 3: Soulflare

As a Bonus Action, spend 1 Focus Point to partially transform for 1 minute, glowing with the elemental energies of your benefactor's power, granting the following abilities:

Hardened Skin. You gain Temporary Hit Points equal to your Monk level + your Wisdom modifier.

Draconic Claws. When making an Unarmed Attack against an enemy, you may choose to inflict Bludgeoning or Slashing damage. In addition, once per turn you may add an amount of elemental damage to a successful hit equal to your Wisdom modifier.

Reckless Defender. When an ally within 5 feet of you would be hit by an enemy attack, you may use your Reaction to interpose yourself and become the target of the attack, instead. This may cause the attack to miss if the attacker's roll is not sufficient to defeat your AC. On a hit, you suffer all damage and effects as if you were the original target of the attack. (You and your ally exchange positions. This does not trigger any Attacks of Opportunity.)

The transformation may be ended early as a Free Action, or if rendered Unconscious.

Level 6: Soul's Flight

Your Soulflare transformation now includes immaterial wings that appear to be made from the same elemental energies as your benefactor's breath, granting the following:

Flight. Gain a Fly Speed equal to your Speed for the duration of the transformation.

Guardian's Resilience. When you use your Reaction to trigger Reckless Defender, if the attack hits you, you may use the damage reduction from Deflect Attacks as well. You may not redirect the attack, even if the damage is reduced to zero.

First Into the Fray. Once per turn, if you move at least 10 feet in a straight line immediately before making a successful attack via Unarmed Strike or with a Monk weapon against a target, add an additional Martial Arts die of elemental damage to your damage roll.

Level 11: Soul Unburdened

The Soulflare transformation now becomes more extreme, causing the Monk to sprout armored scales, horns, and/or a tail and may cause limited changes to their facial structure and teeth. (Such features that already exist become more alike to the dragon type of their benefactor.) They may, if a Small creature, choose to become Medium for the duration. The power awakening inside them grows, granting the following:

Free Kindling. Once per long rest, you may enter your Soulflare transformation without expending Focus.

Draconic Might. The bonus damage from Draconic Claws and First Into the Fray are now added to all successful Unarmed Strikes/charge attacks during Soulflare's duration, not just once per turn. This bonus damage stacks, meaning a charge attack as in First Into the Fray using an Unarmed Strike receives both bonuses.

Inescapable Guardian. The range of Reckless Defender is now 10 feet instead of 5 feet. You may now redirect attacks when using this feature as per Deflect Attacks, as well as when the attack does not defeat your AC.

Level 17: Unquenchable Soul

The Soulflare transformation reaches its limit, altering the Monk's appearance to that of a half-dragon of the appropriate type, the previously spectral wings now taking on physical form. When the duration of the transformation would expire, the Monk may choose to remain in this altered form (only retaining the transformation's flight speed) until the transformation is activated again, and they may once again choose which form to retain after the effect's duration ends. Fully awakening their draconic soul grants the following:

Everburning Spark. Once per long rest, when you would be reduced to 0 Hit Points you drop to 1 Hit Point instead. You immediately activate (or re-activate) Soulflare at no Focus Point cost, and the Temporary Hit Points you gain from this is doubled.

Unrelenting Fury. By expending 3 Focus Points, the Monk uses a Bonus Action to summon an aura of elemental energy to harm any foe who dares approach, or who is too slow to evade the Monk's attack. All creatures that are hostile to the Monk that begin their turn within 5 feet of the Monk or that enter a 5 foot range around the Monk must make a Dexterity saving throw against the Monk's Martial Arts Save DC or take 5d6 elemental damage (half on save). This aura lasts until the duration of Soulflare expires, the Monk chooses to end the effect, or they fail to move at least 10 feet during their turn.

Draconic Hide. While transformed, you gain resistance to Slashing, Bludgeoning, and Piercing damage, as well as your benefactor's elemental damage. If you have resistance to the elemental damage already from another source, you instead become immune. If you would already be immune, you instead gain half the damage that would have been inflicted as Temporary Hit Points, stacking with any remaining Temporary Hit Points from the transformation. (You may not gain Temporary Hit Points from your own elemental damage.)
