Wizard
Base Class: Wizard

Much of the Brigade's history inbetween its creation and the present day is unknown. What is known is long ago Veldan was nearly driven to the brink of extinction by the unstoppable proliferation of monsters, which threatened to starve the populace by devouring all local wildlife, most crops, and lifestock. All while being poisonous to eat. That is, until a group of heroes came together to build the finest culinary institution the world had ever seen, and taught chefs methods to not only find monsters that could be prepared safely, but how to prepare and hunt them down. They have constantly maintained the safety of the ecosystems and kept people fed in times of need, as well as regularly send out Ambassadors to outlying regions or rural communities to teach more people about monster food preparation and recruit potential Battlechefs.

The Battlechef Brigade is an organization within the continent of Veldan, comprised of chefs of incredible cooking and magic ability. These chefs seek to both hone their magics against the monsters of the world, as well as feed the starving, and protect them against monsters. It is unknown exactly how far the Brigade's influence stretches, however, there are many satellite institutions in the more rural parts of the continent, and they have minor influence even in far off continents.

You have an Arcane Cookbook as a spellbook containing all you magical research and arcane recipes. You can use the cookbook as a spellcasting focus for your wizard spells.

While you are holding the book, it grants you the following benefits:

  • When you cast a wizard spell with a spell slot, you can temporarily replace its damage type with a type that appears in another spell in your spellbook, which magically alters the spell’s formula for this casting only. The latter spell must be of the same level as the spell slot you expend.
  • When you cast a wizard spell as a ritual, you can use the spell’s normal casting time, rather than adding 10 minutes to it. Once you use this benefit, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest.

Battle Treats

You gain expertise with Cook’s Utensils, which you can use as a spellcasting focus, In addition, whenever you cast the create food and water spell, the food tastes delicious, and you can choose to replace up to 5 gallons of the water created by the spell with ale or wine. You choose what the food and ale or wine look and taste like.

During a short or long rest, you can create a number of magical treats equal to 2 + your Intelligence modifier.

Choose one of the flavors from the list below with which to imbue these treats, which remain magical until you finish a short or long rest.

A creature can use an action or bonus action to eat a treat, gaining a benefit based on the treat’s flavor which, unless otherwise stated, lasts until the end of its next turn.

As a bonus action, you can spend a level 1 spell-slot , teleporting any number of treats on your person next to creatures you can see within 60 feet of you, where they remain, hovering near the creature’s mouth. Such a creature can use its reaction to eat the treat, or it can do so on its next turn as a bonus action. Otherwise, the treat falls to the ground.

  • Bitter. The creature gains resistance to poison damage and has advantage on saving throws made to resist the poisoned condition.
  • Salty. The creature gains advantage on Wisdom saving throws and is immune to the charmed condition.
  • Sour. The creature’s weapon attacks deal bonus acid damage equal to 1 plus your Intelligence modifier.
  • Sweet. The creature gains temporary hit points equal to 3 plus your Intelligence modifier that last for 1 hour.
  • Umami. The creature gains a +2 bonus to its AC.

Your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability checks you make that uses Cook's Utensils to prepare food. In addition, whenever you craft a food (See Cooking), you can add one additional ingredient to the recipe, conferring the benefits of that ingredient to the dish on a successful Cooking check.

Master Gastromancer

10th-level Battlechef feature
Edible Scrolls
Whenever you finish a long rest, you can create one Edible Scroll by touching your Arcane Cookbook to a blank piece of paper or parchment and causing one spell recipe from your Arcane Cookbook to be copied onto the scroll.

The Cookbook must be within 10 feet of you when you make the edible scroll. The chosen spell must be of 1st or 2nd level and must have a casting time of 1 action. Once in the scroll, the spell’s power is enhanced, counting as one level higher than normal. You can cast the spell from the scroll by eating it as an action. The scroll is unreactive to anyone else, and the spell vanishes from your body when you cast it or when you finish your next long rest.

You are also adept at crafting edible versions of spell scrolls, which are described in the treasure chapter of the Dungeon Master’s Guide. The gold and time you must spend to make such a scroll are halved if you use your Battlechef's Utensils.

Battle Magic

At 14th level, you have mastered the art of weaving spellcasting and weapon use into a single harmonious act. When you use your action to cast a Wizard spell, you can make one weapon attack as a bonus action.
