Artificer
Base Class: Artificer

A Runic Armist is an artificer who does not cast spells on the spot: they design them in advance, encode them into runes, and bind them to objects ready for use. They transform magic into tactical devices, enchanted weapons, and arcane explosives, turning the battlefield into a board controlled by careful planning.

"I don’t cast spells. I craft them. Every effect is a design, not an inspiration."

Tools of the Trade

Tool Proficiency. When you adopt this specialization, you gain proficiency with calligrapher’s supplies. If you already have proficiency, you instead gain proficiency with another set of artisan’s tools of your choice.

Runic Weapon

3rd-level  Runic Armist feature

As a Magic action, using calligrapher’s supplies, you can inscribe an elemental rune (fire, cold, acid, lightning, or thunder) on one of your weapons, granting it the following benefits:

  • The weapon’s damage type becomes the chosen elemental damage type.
  • By taking a Bonus Action, you can empower the rune for 1 minute. While the rune is empowered, whenever you hit with an attack made using that weapon, the attack deals an extra 1d8 damage of the same elemental damage type. You can use this benefit again by expending an Artificer spell slot.

You can have only one Runic Weapon at a time.

Intellectual Mastery of Combat

3rd-level  Runic Armist feature

  • You can use your Intelligence instead of Strength or Dexterity for the attack and damage rolls of weapons that bear an Offensive Rune. These weapons count as Magic weapons for the purpose of damage.
  • You gain proficiency with martial weapons.

Enchanted Cadence

 5th-level  Runic Armist feature

  • You gain Extra Attack if you attack using a Runic Weapon when you take the Attack action on your turn.

Runic Equipment

 9th-level  Runic Armist feature

As a Magic action, using calligrapher’s supplies, you can inscribe a rune on a piece of equipment that a creature can wear, such as armor or an accessory, storing within it an Artificer spell that you have prepared and whose range is Self or Touch.

  • You can have a number of Runic Equipment inscribed simultaneously equal to your Intelligence modifier; you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.

Each Runic Equipment can contain only one spell and must meet the following conditions:

    • The spell’s saving throw DC and spell attack bonus are equal to yours.
    • When inscribing a spell of 1st level or higher, you must expend an Artificer spell slot of the corresponding level.
    • The stored spell cannot be targeted by Counterspell.
    • The stored spell can be used only once.
    • Only one rune can be inscribed on each piece of equipment.
    • The runes disappear when you begin a Long Rest.

A creature wearing Runic Equipment can use the stored spell once, following the spell’s normal rules.

If you are the creature wearing the Runic Equipment, you can activate the stored spell as a Bonus Action once per Long Rest, ignoring the spell’s normal casting time.

Runic Overload

15th-level  Runic Armist feature

Your runes reach an exceptional level of refinement:

The damage die of your Runic Weapon is now a d10 instead of its base damage die.

You can temporarily enhance a rune a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus per Long Rest, and only once per turn. You can enhance only runes that you have inscribed yourself. When you use this feature, choose one of the following effects:

  • Offensive Rune: One of your attacks deals an extra 2d12 damage of the rune’s damage type. The rune becomes inoperative until the end of your next turn.
  • Runic Equipment: You can activate an inscribed spell without using an Action, Bonus Action, or Reaction.
