Ranger
Base Class: Ranger

Sorrow-Eaters are deeply sensitive to the anguish and misery that dwell within the soul of every creature. Thus, they have grown accustomed to witnessing how such suffering gives rise to incorporeal threats that linger even after death. For this reason, Sorrow-Eaters seek to grant these undead their eternal rest, whether through a violent coup de grâce or by wielding their power to absorb their guilt and sins.

Expanded Spell List

At 3rd level, you learn additional spells when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown in the Sorrow-Eater Spells table. These spells count as ranger spells for you, but they do not count against the number of ranger spells you know.

Funerary Lore

At 3rd level, you become knowledgeable in various religious practices, particularly funerary rites. You gain proficiency in the Religion skill.

Additionally, whenever you make an Intelligence (Religion) check, you gain a bonus equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum of +1).

Sorrowcraft

At 3rd level, you can absorb a creature's suffering to invoke a macabre rite. As a bonus action, you touch a creature to use a Grief Rite. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest. The Grief Rites are as follows:

Eyes of the Soul. You assimilate some of the creature's memories along with its anguish. The creature you touched to use this Grief Rite must make a Charisma saving throw against your ranger spell save DC; a creature can choose to fail this saving throw. On a failed save, you ask one question and receive a vision from the creature's memories that answers it. If the creature has no memory that answers your question, you receive visions of the most traumatic memory the creature has experienced.

Wraith Blade. You channel the absorbed anguish into a weapon you are holding. For 1 minute, all damage dealt by that weapon is converted to psychic or necrotic damage (your choice when you use this Grief Rite). Additionally, once per turn, when you hit the creature you touched to use this Grief Rite with an attack using that weapon, you deal an extra 1d4 damage. When you reach 11th level in this class, the extra damage increases to 1d6.

Guardian's Veil

At 7th level, your body and mind are protected from degradation by a mysterious force. You have resistance to psychic and necrotic damage, and immunity to possession.

Psychopomp’s Crossroads

At 11th level, you can perform a 1-hour ritual to ensure that all dead creatures within a 30-foot radius pass safely into the afterlife. Once the ritual is complete, none of these creatures can be brought back to life as undead, and you regain one expended use of Grief Rite. You can regain a use of Grief Rite in this way only once per long rest.

Additionally, you gain the following Grief Rites.

Spectral Step. Choose a creature you can see within 60 feet of you. You magically reappear to an unoccupied space within 5 feet of that creature. Additionally, you can make one attack against that creature as part of the same bonus action you use to activate this Grief Rite.

Spirit of Retribution. You manifest a specter formed from the creature's traumas and fears. For 1 minute, whenever the creature you touched to activate this Grief Rite deals damage to you, it takes psychic or necrotic damage (your choice) equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum of 1 damage).

Beyond the Grave

Starting at 15th level, you are always under the effects of the see invisibility spell. In addition, you can cast this spell on a creature within 30 feet of you, and you can affect one additional creature for each spell slot above 2nd level.
