School of the Eclipse

The School of the Eclipse is an arcane tradition devoted to the study and manipulation of shadow magic. Its practitioners learn to weave darkness into tangible forms, channeling the energies of the Shadowfell to enhance their physical abilities and bend the boundaries of space.

Unlike traditional wizards who rely primarily on spells cast from a distance, Wizards of the Eclipse combine their magical expertise with swift, precise melee combat. They conjure twin blades of solidified shadow, move with supernatural agility, and eventually learn to traverse short distances in the blink of an eye.

Originally developed through the study of Shadowfell energies, this discipline emphasizes precision, mobility, and control over brute force. Its practitioners are particularly suited to infiltration and assassination, striking from unexpected positions before vanishing beyond their enemies' reach.

Despite their martial training, Wizards of the Eclipse remain wizards first and foremost. Their mastery of shadow is an extension of their arcane studies, allowing them to blend traditional spellcasting with a deadly and elusive fighting style.

Eclipsed Blades

2nd-Level School of the Eclipse Feature

You have learned to weave shadows into tangible weapons, allowing you to wield darkness itself.

As a bonus action, you can summon two Eclipsed Blades, one in each empty hand. Each blade is a magical simple melee weapon with which you are proficient. It has the Light, Finesse, and Thrown (range 20/60) properties and deals 2d4 Psychic Damage on a hit. You can use your Intelligence modifier, instead of Strength or Dexterity, for the attack and damage rolls of these weapons.

Your Eclipsed Blades can serve as spellcasting focuses for your Wizard spells. You can perform the somatic components of your Wizard spells while wielding both blades, even when you have no free hand. You must still provide material components that have a specified cost or are consumed by the spell.

The blades remain until you dismiss them (no action required), release them, or become Incapacitated. When you throw an Eclipsed Blade, it remains manifested until the attack hits or misses, at which point it vanishes.

You can summon a replacement for a thrown or released Eclipsed Blade into an empty hand without expending an action, provided at least one of your Eclipsed Blades remains manifested. You can do so only once per turn.

When you summon your Eclipsed Blades, you can activate your Eclipsed Dance as part of the same bonus action, expending one use of that feature as normal.

Eclipsed Dance

2nd-level Bladesinging feature

You channel shadow magic through your body, moving with supernatural speed and precision.

You can use a bonus action to start the Eclipsed Dance, which lasts for 1 minute. It ends early if you are incapacitated, if you don medium or heavy armor or a shield, or if you are not wielding your Eclipsed Blades. You can also dismiss the Eclipsed Dance at any time (no action required).

While your Eclipsed Dance is active, you gain the following benefits:

  • You gain a bonus to your AC equal to your Intelligence modifier (minimum of +1).
  • Your walking speed increases by 10 feet.
  • When you make an additional attack using the Light property of your Eclipsed Blades, you can add your Intelligence modifier to the damage of that attack.
  • A creature you hit with an Eclipsed Blade cannot make opportunity attacks against you for the remainder of your turn.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses of it when you finish a long rest.

Extra Attack

6th-level School of the Eclipse feature

You can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn. Moreover, you can cast one of your cantrips in place of one of those attacks.

Eclipse Step

6th-level School of the Eclipse feature

You can step into your own shadow and emerge from another shadow or an area of darkness within 15 feet, teleporting to an unoccupied space you can see. You can emerge from shadows cast by creatures, objects, or environmental features, provided the destination is within range.

The range of this feature increases to 30 feet at 10th level and 60 feet at 14th level.

While your Eclipsed Dance is active, you can use Shadow Step once on each of your turns without expending an action. Otherwise, you can use Shadow Step as a bonus action.

Teleporting with this feature does not provoke opportunity attacks.

Eclipse Incarnate

10th-Level School of the Eclipse Feature

Your mastery of shadow magic allows you to reshape your physical form, dissolving into darkness or assuming the identity of another creature.

You gain the following abilities.

Umbral Form. As a bonus action, you can transform yourself and everything you are wearing or carrying into a living shadow for up to 10 minutes. While transformed, you gain the following benefits:

  • You can move through openings as narrow as 1 inch without squeezing.

  • You gain a climbing speed equal to your walking speed and can move along vertical surfaces and ceilings without making an ability check.

  • You can move through other creatures' spaces, but you cannot end your movement there.

  • You can use your Shadow Step feature.

  • You cannot make attacks or cast spells.

  • You can end this transformation as a bonus action. It also ends if you become Incapacitated.

Stolen Silhouette. By touching the shadow of another creature, you can capture its silhouette and magically assume its appearance as an action. This transformation lasts for up to 1 hour, until you dismiss it (no action required), or until you become Incapacitated.

Your transformation physically alters your appearance, including your voice and the apparent form of your clothing and equipment. Your game statistics remain unchanged, and you gain none of the creature's memories, abilities, or knowledge.

You can retain up to two stolen silhouettes indefinitely, allowing you to assume either stored appearance again without touching the original creature's shadow. If you already have two stored silhouettes, you can choose to replace one when capturing another.

You can also capture and assume a creature's silhouette temporarily without storing it or replacing either of your stored silhouettes. A temporary silhouette is lost when its transformation ends.

Uses. You can use Umbral Form or Stolen Silhouette a combined number of times equal to your Intelligence modifier (minimum of once). You regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

Shadow of the Eclipsed

14th-Level School of the Eclipse Feature

Your mastery of shadow magic allows your own shadow to act independently, becoming a deadly extension of your will.

While your Eclipsed Dance is active, you can animate your shadow, allowing it to separate from your body and fight alongside you. Your Eclipsed Shadow gains the following benefits:

Independent Shadow. Your shadow can occupy a space within 30 feet of you. On each of your turns, you can move it up to 30 feet to another space within this range without expending an action. Your shadow is not a creature, does not occupy its space for the purposes of movement, and cannot be targeted or damaged.

Shadow Strike. Once on each of your turns, when you take the Attack action, your shadow can make one Eclipsed Blade attack against a creature within 5 feet of it. This attack requires no additional action and uses your Intelligence modifier and proficiency bonus for its attack roll. On a hit, the target takes 2d4 Psychic Damage plus your Intelligence modifier.

Shared Shadows. When you use your Shadow Step feature, you can measure its range from your Eclipsed Shadow's position instead of your own. You must still teleport to an unoccupied space you can see that contains a shadow or an area of darkness.

Your Eclipsed Shadow remains active until your Eclipsed Dance ends. It immediately returns to you when you dismiss it (no action required), become Incapacitated, or your Eclipsed Dance ends.

Animating your Eclipsed Shadow does not expend an additional use of Eclipsed Dance or require any other limited resource.
