Base Class: Sorcerer
A Maleficar is a special kind of sorcerer. Rather than drawing power from a specific ancestor, or a great grandparent's fraternisation with a powerful being, a Maleficar's heritage comes from its family's previous magical powers. Any contact with arcane power, whether from a dragon's ancestry or a deal with an ancient Fiend, a mortal's blood is irrevocably altered by the mere taste of magic running through it. For many people, this has no bearing on day to day life. Perhaps a Wizard may find learning some spells to be easier, or a Warlock may find themself drawn to a certain otherworldly patron more than any other but a Maleficar would rather take the most convenient, yet most physically demanding route to power; literally siphoning power from their own blood. This obviously can be risky. Blood is what gives a mortal life, and it is theorised that a lack of it can have...consequences regarding their survivability. If they are willing to risk it, however, they may find themselves even stronger than a descendant of an ancient dragon.
Blood Magic
Your power over your own blood confers a number of benefits, but as with all things there can be consequences to your powers. When you choose this Sorcerous Origin at level 1, you are unable to regain hit points from health potions. Furthermore, any health drained through Hemomancy class features cannot be healed by any kind of divine magic, such as Cure Wounds or Healing Word. Instead, imbibing the blood of your slain foes can be a substitute. You can use an action to consume the blood of a creature within 30 feet that has died in the last 10 minutes. The creature must have been killed by a weapon with a sharp edge such as a sword or otherwise must have had blood drawn as part of damage being dealt to it. In other words, to siphon blood there must be an open wound. When you do, you regain hit points equal to 1d4 + your Constitution modifier. You can do this a number of times equal to your Constitution modifier and you regain all uses of this ability on a Long Rest.
Blood Heritage
Starting at level 1, you use CON as your spellcasting modifier, using the same rules as would be used for CHA as a Sorcerer.
You can also use your blood as a focus for your spell casting. When you cast a spell that requires a material component, you can expend hit points equal to the spell level to open a wound in your hand. As long as the material component has no required cost, you can use your blood instead of the component. The spell consumes the blood, even if the component would not normally be consumed, and the spell is cast as normal.
Furthermore, any spell cast by you that deals damage also causes wounds to open on the target. These do not do any more damage but do mean that open wounds are present on the target, for the purpose of the Hemomancer's Blood Magic feature.
Power of Blood
Starting at 6th level, you can use your blood to increase the potency of your spells. Once per turn, when you cast a spell that deals damage, you can expend a number of hit points equal to 3 times the spell's level and add your Constitution modifier to the damage of the spell.
Arcane Drain
At 14th level, you have learnt how to turn your life force into pure arcane energy. As a bonus action on your turn, you can expend a number of hit points to create a spell slot. The number of hit points drained is equal to 3 times the level of the slot, and it cannot be higher than 5th level. You lose all spell slots created through this method at the end of a Long Rest.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to twice your Constitution modifier, and you recover all uses of this feature at the end of a Long Rest.
Blood Mastery
Your mastery over your blood confers a number of benefits. At level 18, your Blood Magic and Arcane Drain features recover on a short rest instead of a long rest, and Blood Siphon becomes a bonus action. Furthermore, you can spend 10 minutes to create one spell slot of 6th, 7th, 8th or 9th level. When you do, you expend hit points equal to 10 times the spell slot's level. Once you use this feature, you must complete a long rest before you can use it again.
