Refined Combat Effectiveness

Starting at 3rd level, you gain 3 Superior Reflexes.  At levels 7, 10, 15 and 18 you gain an additional Superior Reflex, totaling 4|5|6|7 respectively. You regain all Superior Reflexes after a long rest.

Whilst wielding a shield and a melee weapon, you may use your action to ready a defensive stance in-order to perform special reactions.  While in a defensive stance, you are considered behind 1/2 cover against ranged attacks.

  • Deflect: When a creature makes a successful melee attack against you, you may expend a Superior Reflex to Deflect the brunt of an attack. When you do so, the damage you take from the attack is reduced by half.
  • Perfect Block: Alternatively you may expend 2 Superior Reflexes to perform a Perfect Block which negates all damage from a single attack.

  • Riposte: When a creature fails a melee attack against you, you may expend a Superior Reflex to Riposte against a failed melee attack. Allowing you to make a melee weapon attack against the attacking creature.

  • Tank: When you enter a defensive stance you may immediate expend 3 Superior Reflexes to prepare to Tank, causing attack rolls against you to be at disadvantage. This effect lasts until the beginning of your next turn or ends if you are forced from a defensive stance (such as being grappled, knocked prone, disarmed of weapon/shield, etc.).
  • Retaliate: When you enter a defensive stance you may immediately expend 3 Superior Reflexes to prepare to Retaliate, whenever you are hit by a successful attack you may immediately make a melee attack against that attacking creature.  This effect is not limited to one attack or attacker. This effect lasts until the beginning of your next turn or ends if you are forced from a defensive stance (such as being grappled, knocked prone, disarmed of weapon/shield, etc.)

Additionally, when you utilize either Tank or Retaliate, as a bonus action you may attempt to provoke all creature that can see or hear you within 15 feet to challenge your defense.  Creatures in range must make a DC Wisdom saving throw. A failure will result in the creature being provoked, thus compelled to approach & attack you, which lasts until the beginning of your next turn.  The taunted creature must make another DC wisdom saving throw at the beginning of its turn to attempt to break the provocation.  If a creature is provoked, any attack it makes against any other creature besides you is at a disadvantage.
