Base Class: Sorcerer
Your soul burns bright, the light of the phoenix encased within. You or your ancestors perhaps rendered a phoenix a great service, or you were born in its presence. Maybe a phoenix sought refuge in your body, or was trapped there. Whatever the cause, a shard of the phoenix’s power dwells within you.
That power is a mixed blessing. Like the mythical creature, you can invoke fiery energy and gain the ability to cheat death itself. This power comes at a cost. The fire within you seethes, demanding to be unleashed. You sometimes find yourself absentmindedly feeding fires. You can’t bear to allow a fire to sputter out. You feel most comfortable while holding a lit torch or sitting in front of a campfire. Phoenix sorcerers can use their powers to pull themselves back from the brink of death, and all too often their own, rash nature or reliance on destructive magic is what puts them there in the first place.
Such sorcerers are wanderers by necessity. The volatile nature of their magic makes other folk nervous. If a fire breaks out in town, a phoenix sorcerer had best flee, whether guilty or not. Fire is a dangerous force, and phoenix sorcerers have a reputation (deserved or not) for reckless behavior, confident that the essence of the phoenix can save them.
Your first discovery of your power was probably like many others, the emergence of a phoenix sorcerer tends to be a violent awakening. Most often it happens while the being is still a child, during a time of high stress or trauma. Some have been noted to awaken during an assault, or when the child is feeling particularly helpless or feels a lack of control. Whatever the case, when an awakening begins, the following occurs;
- The child’s (usually 8 to 10 years old) skin and bones tear and break as a pair of flaming wings burst from their back.
- Their radiant soul quickly overwhelms the child and anyone within 30 feet of the newly awakened child is turned to ash.
It doesn't take long for the wings to disappear, and the radiance to die off, seemingly locked away again- it won't be for another 10 to 15 years that the phoenix soul is able to be controlled in a sorcerer.
Beacon of Radiance
Starting at 1st level your phoenix soul gives you the ability to be a beacon of radiance in the darkness. Anytime you cast a spell that has the damage identifier of
- Radiant
- Fire
You can add your Charisma modifier to deal additional damage of the same type on top of the spell’s normal damage. Your soul also gives you access to these three cantrips that do not count towards your cantrips known.
- Sacred Flame
- Produce Flame
- Fire Bolt
Phoenix Soul Spells
Starting at 1st level, your phoenix soul changes your mind in subtle but profound ways. You learn additional spells when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown on the Phoenix Soul Spells table. The spell counts as a sorcerer spell for you, but it doesn’t count against the number of sorcerer spells you know. These spells can’t be replaced when you gain a level in this class.
Sorcerer Level Spells
1st Burning Hands, Guiding Bolt
3rd Continual Flame, Flaming Sphere
5th Fire Ball, Scorching Ray
7th Fire Shield, Wall of Fire
9th Flame Strike, Immolation
Radiant Wings
Starting at 6th level, you now remember and understand how to extend your wings as a bonus action, although it is painful and your body can only take so much of the pain. Because of this you can only use your wings a number of times equal to 1 + Constitution modifier per day. You have a flying speed of 40 ft, and the wings last for 1 minute per use. You regain all expended uses of this ability at dawn.
At 14th level you gain the ability to use it an additional time, and the length of time you are able to fly is increased to 10 minutes. At 18th level your wings become permanent, they are hard to conceal and never retract.
You can not wear medium or heavy armor due to your wings, and any light armor or clothes must be made to accommodate them, such as including holes for them to protrude from and being flame repellent.
Your wings are made of magical fire, choose a color for your wings that falls within the spectrum that a flame can be.
Fiery Death and Rebirth
Starting at 14th level, the fiery energy within you grows restless and vengeful. In the face of defeat, it surges outward to preserve you in a fiery roar.
If you are reduced to 0 hit points, you can use your reaction to draw on the spark of the phoenix. You are instead reduced to 1 hit point, and each creature within 10 feet of you takes fire damage equal to your sorcerer level + twice your Charisma modifier, as you explode in a fiery blaze.
If you use this feature while your Radiant Wings are extended, you regain hit points equal to your sorcerer level + twice your Charisma modifier and your Radiant Wings immediately retract (if not yet permanent).
Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
Divine Presence
Starting at 18th Level, you can now embody the majesty of a phoenix. Using an action, your skin takes on a red hue and sheds radiant light, your eyes become ruby red and impossibly deep, and the flames of your wings encompass your whole body. Anything physically attached to your body such as hair is not damaged, but clothes or items are burned unless flame repellent. You can hold the form for 1 minute, but it dissolves away if you are reduced to 0 hit points or are unconscious. The following things happen while you are in this form.
- You give off bright light up to 60 feet from you and dim light 30 feet beyond that.
- You add your Charisma modifier to all your saving throws.
- You can regenerate 1d10 hit points per round on your turn, and any allies that start their turn within 10 feet of you or come within 10 feet of you for the first time that turn can regenerate 1d10 hit points per round, on their turn.
Once you use this feature you can't use it again until the next dawn.

Posted Apr 4, 2020I like this! Do you think you could add a couple of healing spells in the spells list since phoenixes are traditionally healers as well?
