Base Class: Wizard
My take on updating the School of Lore Mastery (I know, like the millionth one) for a player in my campaign. The idea was to make the focus on giving the player more options in spell preparation. I thought making it more about using knowledge to prepare for what they think is coming rather than allowing them to do everything in real time, felt more thematic.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Expanded Knowledge
Starting at 2nd level, you become a compendium of knowledge on a vast array of topics. You become proficient in the Arcana, History, Nature, and Religion skills. If you are already proficient in any of these skills, your proficiency bonus is now doubled for any ability check you make that uses that skill.
In addition, your multitasking mind allows you to keep a larger number of spells prepared than other wizards. After each long rest, you may prepare a number of spells from your spell book equal to your Intelligence modifier + half your proficiency bonus (rounded up) + your wizard level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
Spell Alteration
At 2nd level, you uncover the ability to alter the formula of spells you prepare each day. When you prepare a spell of level 1 or higher that deals acid, cold, fire, lightning, necrotic, radiant or thunder damage, you can substitute that damage type with one other type from that list (you can change only one damage type per spell).
Advanced Spell Alteration
At 6th level, your ability to alter spells in your spell book improves further. When you prepare a spell that requires a saving throw, you may change the saving throw from one ability score to another of the same type (physical/mental). For example, you may change a spell requiring a Dexterity saving throw to Strength or Constitution, but not Intelligence/Wisdom/Charisma. You may perform this alteration on a number of spells equal to your intelligence modifier divided by 2 (rounded up).
Speed Reader
At 10th level, you are so familiar with your spell book that you can prepare spells faster than ever before. During a short rest, you can replace spells you have prepared with another spell from your spell book. You may make this exchange for a number of spells equal to your intelligence modifier divided by 2 (rounded up).
Arcane Master
At 14th level, your knowledge of magic allows you to duplicate almost any spell, given enough time. When preparing spells for the day, you can call to mind the ability to cast one spell of your choice from any class’s spell list. The spell must be of a level for which you have spell slots, counts as one of your prepared spells for the day, and you follow the normal rules for casting it, including expending a spell slot. If the spell isn’t a wizard spell, it counts as a wizard spell when you cast it. The ability to cast the spell vanishes from your mind when you cast it.
