Monk
Base Class: Monk

Monks dedicated this monastic tradition are some of the lucky few to have found a dragon master willing to take on a humanoid student. The Way of the Mystic Dragon opens pathways of great destructive force; an ill-disciplined individual may find their resources drained too quickly, or the consequences of your ki-fuelled rages may take their toll if allies and your surrounding environments are subject to collateral damage. If you do not practice restraint, you may find yourself hunted like the great Draconic Masters of the past.

Mystic Dragon Meditation

Beginning at 3rd level, you channel and align your ki to the spiritual essence of the Mystic Dragon while you meditate. When you finish a short or long rest, choose a dragon type. The dragon's type will influence the features available to you in this subclass.

  • Black - Acid
  • Blue - Lightning
  • Brass - Fire
  • Bronze - Lightning
  • Copper - Acid
  • Gold - Fire
  • Green - Poison
  • Red - Fire
  • Silver - Cold
  • White - Cold

Fist of the Mystic Dragon

When you choose this tradition at 3rd level, you gain the ability to discharge powerful elemental energy.

You gain a new attack option that you can use with the Attack action. This special attack is a ranged spell attack with a range of 15 feet, and increases by 5 feet when your Martial Arts die increases. You are proficient with it, and you add your Dexterity modifier to its attack and damage rolls. Its damage changes depending on the dragon type you chose during Mystic Dragon Meditation, and its damage die is a d4. This die changes as you gain monk levels, as shown in the Martial Arts column of the Monk table.

When you're able to make an unarmed strike with a Monk feature, you can replace any of the strikes with this special attack. You are unable to use the Stunning Strike ability when you hit a creature with this attack.

Dragon Keeper

Beginning at 6th level, you can spend 10 minutes in ritual meditation to summon a Pseudodragon companion. The pseudodragon is affiliated to the dragon type you chose with your Mystic Dragon Meditation, and gains immunity to the associated element. For every level you gain in this class, the pseudodragon gains an additional Hit Die (d4), and its Armour Class is 13 + your proficiency bonus. If the pseudodragon is reduced to 0 hit points, it disappears, leaving behind no physical form.
You gain the following features if your pseudodragon is within 30 feet of you:

  • Whenever your pseudodragon takes damage, you can use your reaction to transfer the damage to you instead.
  • You can use your reaction to spend 1 ki point and gain the keen senses of your companion, gaining advantage on Wisdom (perception) checks that rely on hearing, sight or smell.
  • As a bonus action, you can spend 1 ki point to evoke the pseudodragon's Magic Resistance ability. Until the start of your next turn, you gain advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
  • Whenever you use your Fist of the Mystic Dragon or Mystic Dragon Breath attacks, you can choose to originate the attack from your pseudodragon instead.

Your pseudodragon acts independently of you, but it always obeys your commands. In combat, it rolls its own initiative and acts on its own turn. You can have only a single pseudodragon summoned at any given time.

Mystic Dragon Breath

At 11th level you can spend 1 ki point to empower the force of your Fist of the Mystic Dragon attack by projecting a line of destructive energy equal in distance to the attack range and 5 feet wide. Creatures in the area of effect must make a Dexterity save against your Ki DC or suffer damage equal to your Martial Arts dice + your Dexterity modifier. On a successful save, they take half damage.

You can spend additional ki points, up to the score of your Wisdom modifier, to increase the damage by an additional Martial Arts die for each ki point spent.

Inhale, Exhale.

At 11th level, you gain the ability to deflect and absorb elemental energy. As a reaction to being targeted by an attack, spell or area of effect that deals damage affiliated with your chosen dragon type, you inhale the energy, reducing the damage by 1d10 + your Wisdom modifier + your monk level.

If the damage you take is reduced to zero, you can choose to exhale the energy, restoring 1 ki point, or immediately making a Mystic Dragon Breath attack.

Empowered Essence of the Mystic Dragon

At 17th level, the spiritual connection between you and your pseudodragon is heightened. As an action, you can spend eight ki points to infuse your pseudodragon with raw mystical essence, transforming the pseudodragon into a Young Dragon for one minute. If the minute ends and the Young Dragon has 1 or more hit points, it reverts to a pseudodragon. If the Young Dragon is reduced to 0 hit points, it disappears, leaving behind no physical form. Your Young Dragon acts independently of you, but it always obeys your commands. In combat, it rolls its own initiative and acts on its own turn. Your Young Dragon uses a modified Young Brass Dragon stat block. The damage immunity and damage dealt is affiliated with your chosen dragon type, and the Young Dragon does not have access to the Sleep Breath Weapon.

The presence of the Young Dragon augments your elemental affinity. While your Young Dragon companion is within 30 feet of you, you gain the following benefits:

  • All features granted to you by your Pseudodragon.
  • The range of your Fist of the Mystic Dragon and Mystic Dragon Breath abilities are increased by 10 feet.
  • You gain immunity to the damage affiliated with your dragon type.
  • Your Inhale, Exhale feature can be used as a reaction when you are targeted by fire, cold, lightning, acid or poison damage regardless of your chosen dragon type.
